The Miata is a fun-to-drive, low-slung little roadster, with pinpoint handling, instant power delivery, and a crisp manual gearbox. Excellent fuel economy is an extra bonus. While it remains very tight, the cabin has grown a little more livable over the years. The ride is surprisingly tolerable, but cabin noise can grow wearying on long cruises.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"It's just fun to drive."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It is a blast to drive! A winding road becomes an adventure."

Anonymous, BC (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Nothing beats the Miata for that stick-to-the-road feeling driving along curvy country roads. Because it's so low, you feel like you're going faster than you are. On the other hand, I wouldn't choose it for a thousand-mile road trip on the turnpike; it's noisy and not roomy. Also the close-ratio gearbox is set up for the curvy country roads, not the turnpike."

Anonymous, MA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The handling is in another galaxy from any other car under double the price. It makes going anywhere a fun, engaging activity."

George N., CA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Excellent handling, throttle response and feedback. Clutch feels a little dull, but shifts are snappy and satisfying."

Anonymous, MD (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Terrific driving experience. All the advantages of a sports car without the hassles or high prices of more exotic models."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The acceleration is comparably close to other roadsters and good enough for all but a race circuit. The handling is superb, it feels as if the Miata can jump sideways to avoid road hazards."

PAUL L., FL (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Handling. And handling. Oh, did I mention how fun the handling is?"

ROBERT D., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This is the most responsive and sure-footed car I've ever driven. It loves tight curves, and is so light that it accelerates like crazy, even with its relatively small 4 cylinder engine."

TOKOYO B., MD (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The car is a hoot to drive. Quick, responsive, predictable (in a good way) and great fun on the curves."

Anonymous, GA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Acceleration is very satisfying and exciting. It handles like a dream, glued to the road, and makes even local driving exciting."

Stuart M., NY (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"style, handling,"

Anonymous, PA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's like driving a go-kart, it makes the Driving Experience lots of fun"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Handles as a sports car should, but I changed springs to stiffer versions and installed larger sway bars"

Dayle P., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Cornering is amazing. Most smiles per miles of almost any car"

Barry R., MA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Responsive and fun to drive"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Nothing's more fun that driving this little car. And you don't need to go fast to enjoy it: since it's so low to the ground, you feel like you're going faster than you actually are. You feel one with the car, and one with the road."

Allen W., MA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"I love driving this car. When you get in, turn it on, you lose 30 years in your mind."

Robert E., SC (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"While it is not a "quiet" vehicle, it makes all the right kind of sports car noise while the seats hold you comfortably in place going around corners."

George N., CA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Seats are a bit firm and do not adjust on the passenger side. Visors drop only down (at which point they obscure much of the front view) and do not pivot to block the side. I have hardtop but even so noise gets very loud over 60 mph. Could use more sound insulation. Clutch and throttle pedals are aligned so that I wish my left leg (clutch) was longer."

JEFF A., WI (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It is a two-seat convertible. Even with the top up, it is noisy at most speeds above 35 mph and worse at highway speeds. The A/C cannot adequately cool you down with the top up as the heat radiates easily through the rag top. The fan is always on high. With the top down - forget it. From mid-Fall through Mid-Spring the car is a joy to drive in Florida. The ride is what you would expect from a roadster, I knew what it would be like."

PAUL L., FL (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Just to be clear, this is not a car that is meant to be comfortable. I do not consider a lower level response to be a flaw."

DAYLE P., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Seats leave much to be desired. styling so so acceleration mediocre instruments minimal"

ANDRE A., RI (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Climate control very confusing. Especially AC. Seat sides dig into hip sides"

DAVID K., CA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Seats are comfortable and seating position is good, but there is not enough room for left foot on dead pedal. Top of foot presses on clutch lever. I am not tall, but I have to move the seat all the way back. There is a lot of road, wind, and engine noise. Engine sound is not pleasant. Climate controls are maddening; it keeps turning on the A/C when I don't want it and I have to keep turning it off."

R S., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The seats are comfortable but room to recline them is very limited. Road noise from the back wheels is high with the hard top up."

Robert E., TN (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Seats are not padded very well and very little Lombard back support. I know it is a sports car but the seats should be designed for regular driving too. It is noisy but that too is to be expected since the vehicle sits closer to the ground and not as insulated as bigger cars. Ride and handling are great."

Dennis W., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Cramped passenger compartment. Seats are difficult to get into, but feel good once you are in them. Also, it is difficult to get out of the car."

Franklin W., GA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The seat needs to be about 1+ inch further back and it should for it's price come with a 4 or 6 way seat. The seal on the widows leaks after time and causes increased wind noise."

Park P., NJ (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Great sports car experience. Ideal third car in family fleet."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"These are just plain fun cars to drive! Not enough power to get you in trouble but enough to merge easily. Handles like my childhood go kart but with a better ride."

ROBERT D., TX (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Really love the retractable hard top and the 6 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters."

ROBERT G., NY (2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It is the last model year of that styling, and so it is a classic of smooth curves that hearken back to the great British roadsters. The new Miatas just don't have that"
