Since 1990, Mazda took the idea of the charmingly eccentric British roadster and infused it with Japanese reliability. By remaining true to its nature of fun and affordable performance, the Miata has thrilled and inspired hundreds of thousands of buyers, from money-conscious workaday drivers to weekend racers.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Ming C., NY (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Turns on a dime Incredible connection between driver and vehicle"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The MX-5 is a driver's car. While it's acceleration does not measure up to larger engine roadsters, the MX-5 more than makes up for it in handling. It drives like it is on rails. For me, the corner role makes the car that much more fun to drive on twisty roads. If a driver would like to eliminate the corner role, there are inexpensive after market kits made just for this purpose."

Greg Y., OK (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Love the Manuel transmission"

Janice P., GA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Just so easy to drive and so much fun. Much quicker in everyday use than the BRZ and it's easy to toss around. By far the best car I have ever owned for both city and country roads with the compliant suspension. Surprisingly practical, I drive it every day and I use it for all the shopping (trunk fits one grocery cart)."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Agle handling and excellent shift quality"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Very responsive"

"Excellent handling on all road conditions"

"Plenty of power for the real world and fun to drive"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This is very agile car which make driving an enjoyable experience."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Everything CR says is true. The closest thing to a go-cart that is legal to drive on a highway - love to take it out and open the top."

- D., DE (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It rides on rails. Lithe and agile with fun factor of 100."

Bryan H., TX (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"FUN to drive. Exceptional handling. Well built and dependable. Good A/C and Bose radio."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The driving experience is FUN. It's not the most powerful car but its power to weight ration is excellent. Its perfect 50-50 weight distribution is a joy to experience. I can drive it a my 9/10s without a problem as that's only 5/10s of the car's capabilities. "The difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.""

David S., VA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Lots of wind noise, even with the retractable hardtop up."

Donald J., IA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The MX-5 Grand Touring is a wonderful car for someone who enjoys driving, the feel of the road, and some slight engine noise. The seats are quite comfortable. During long commutes, the stereo system with speakers in the headrest help with the road and wind noise. The MD-5 is everything you would expect from a roadster, with many creature comforts of higher end cars. The one thing that would make the top MD-5 model perfect are Air Conditioned seats for those hot summer days."

Greg Y., OK (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Pretty noisy. Ride is good. Seating height not adjustible, have to use a cushion."

John S., CA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Noise is acceptable for a roadster. Seats are comfortable."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"As you would expect from a little sportscar, the ride is very stiff and quite noisy - even with the hardtop in place. Gets tiring on long trips but incredibly fun on a winding road."

Richard B., MO (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"For a sports car it rides very well and is relatively quiet. Seats are comfortable and supportive."

Jeffrey P., WA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Too much road/tire noise! Seats need more adjustments and lumbar support."

David S., VA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The RF model is surprisingly noisy inside with the top up; thought it would be quieter than the soft top. Am currently installing sound deadening in various areas and this is helping"

David T., NY (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"seats should provide better support"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"UNREAL VALUE FOR PRICE PAID--FUN-FUN-FUN"

Ted G., TX (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Wonderful sports car at great price. Only light true sports car in its price range."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Fun to drive and good combination of performance factors for the money. Well made and reliable."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"We leased it in Noember 2017 and loved it. However, at the end of May 2018, with 4K miles,a burning smell filled the cabin. After stopping to check the problem, it failed to re-start; the clutch pedal went to the floor, so the push-button starter failed. After having it towed to dealer, it took 2 months for them to decide it wasn’t the alternator (which they didn’t have in stock), get approval from Mazda US to make warranted repair, decide it was the clutch, get approval from Mazda US to make repair, and order special tool from Mazda US that was not in dealer toolbox (multi-make dealer mega-store), then decide it might not be safe to drive and offered us a new ‘17 Miata RF or a new ‘18 Miata soft-top with no loss of original trade and cash down on the (undeclared) lemon. We have owned 2Miatas, a ‘95 and a 2002, both with no problems and driven as family sports cars, each with more than 100k miles and traded up each time."

Richard F., SC (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Great car for the money. Super dependable. Fun to drive. Car is extremely responsive. Can drive 8 hours and still be comfortable."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"A retractable hardtop that doesnt compromise trunk space in a small car that is well thought out and very fun to drive"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Truly fun to drive"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"I could afford to buy a $200,000 car, but instead got a great handling, fun to drive vehicle for under $34,000. no it doesn't have an outrageous amount of horsepower, but you can't beat the amount of fun you can have for the price!"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The "fun for the buck" factor in this vehicle is unmatched. A truly enjoyable vehicle to drive. Everyone should own a car like this at least once in their life."

David S., VA (2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata)
