Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Mini Cooper owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Issue with programing, system was giving false warning of drive train failure. Fixed by program patch / upgrade at dealer transport and repair no charge"

Richard W., LA (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"When you attempt to switch between playing music and podcasts, system will play one second of the podcast then stop, then you have to switch between play modes to get it to start again. System doesn't automatically transition between USB and bluetooth, you have to navigate through several menus to select each one. Radio stations favorites are difficult to set correctly. Overall system is unintuitive and difficult to use"

Anonymous, KS (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Playing music through the phone using USB interface, sometimes the music cuts off and there is no way to resume without disconnecting and reconnecting"

Keith F., CA (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Totally non intuitive, and inadequate directions - never tells you the name of the road you are turning on to, you must look at the screen and zoom in - dangerous"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The voice guidance features are so poor and counterintuitive that I've stopped using it. For example, it does not tell the name of the street you are turning on to until you are about to turn. No notice is given. Almost all infotainment programming is dumb and counterintuitive - and I am very computer savvy. Can't see the manual to figure it out, because it's on the screen, and takes you away from whatever you're trying to program. A deal breaker when it comes to buying another of this car. My Audi, on the other hand, is very smartly configured."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Blue tooth requires hand manipulation of the screen to select a phone number. No voice commands are available. In addition, it does not always sync in with the phone"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Mini Cooper 1.5-L 3 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"As with the navigation system, the radio is stupidly programmed. Saving a station is totally counterintuitive and requires multiple steps and you can't see the instructions without leaving the radio to display the manual, in which case you can't program the radio. Everything electronic in this car is dumb. Our Audi, on the other hand, is brilliant."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"User controls extremely complicated and unable to be changed while driving"

Anonymous, RI (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Voice control commands

"Mini software does not fully interface w/ iOS, so I cannot use Siri, voice text, etc. while driving. Had I known, I would not have bought it"

Debbie K., CA (2014 Mini Cooper 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Bluetooth does not allow Siri to function. The bluetooth functionality is a stand alone interface that interferes with the phone functions so I don't use it. It is more of a distraction than a help"

Keith F., CA (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Car at dealer for over one month to get correct diagnosis and proper parts from Germany"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Mini Cooper Base 1.5-L 3 Cyl turbo)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"Factory Recall on the engine. Took it in for an oil change and the Service Manager asked if they could have it for a few days and when I asked why they noted the recall, supplied a loaner and replaced the engine. Apparently that engine series had a crankshaft issue. Replaced engine at no cost to me so my car while having 63k on odometer only has about 30,000 on the engine. The B48A Engine is a very solid 2.0L platform."

John R., NY (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Mini identified a problem with manual transmissions. The issues resulted from a shifting mechanism; in which a bad part caused metal shavings to be expelled into the engine. My vehicle tested positive for this issue, therefore the only fix was a total engine replacement"

Anonymous, SC (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Turbo or supercharger

"Dealer discovered turbo oil leak in warranty service. Replaced the turbo under warranty."

C E., CA (2014 Mini Cooper Base 1.5-L 3 Cyl turbo)

"Took the Mini in for routine service covered by warranty. The turbo was leaking oil and had to be replaced"

C E., CA (2014 Mini Cooper Base 1.5-L 3 Cyl turbo)

"During an in warranty service an oil leak was found coming from the turbo. The turbo was replaced in warranty by the Mini dealer service department.."

Ramon T., NC (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Front pads wore out in 18000 miles"

Anonymous, OR (2014 Mini Cooper Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Front brakes were worn out at only 25,000 miles. Pads, rotors, and sensors all had to be replaced with mini not covering any cost under warranty"

Jim M., VA (2014 Mini Cooper Base)
Rotors

"Once the pads were replaced the dealer said that the rotors had. to be replaced also. It seemed to me that having to change factory pads and rotors at just 25000 miles was below par for any newer car."

Ramon T., NC (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Squeaking

"some rust and scoring. The dealer cleaned it and said in 5000 miles I need new rotors, pads etc."

Anonymous, (2014 Mini Cooper S 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Jeffrey R., AZ (2014 Mini Cooper Base 1.5-L 3 Cyl turbo)

"jumped out of 1st gear when releasing the clutch. problem was intermittent and could not recreate at dealership. took 3 trips before they fixed it. I had to videotape it happening to prove their was an issue. MINI regional rep had to be called in"
