Despite a few high points, this iteration of the Nissan Altima is not competitive among midsized sedans. In a segment brimming with better cars, the Altima is a lackluster choice, ranking below  its competitors with a humdrum driving experience. Among its virtues are a roomy rear seat and good fuel economy. That said, with the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder, we measured an impressive 31 mpg overall.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, NY (2013 Nissan Altima SV 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I've had the car in 3 times for the problem of the passenger air bag not detecting the presence of a passenger (my wife). Each time they reprogrammed and said it was fixed. I know there is a software problem that if my wife is not sitting still in the passenger seat when I start the car, the software does not detect her presence. If I start the car before she enters and the initialization process is over, then she enters the car, her presence will be detected. If she is not fully seated and quiet before I start the car, she is never detected, even if she gets out of the car and reenters. We frequently have to pull over on the side of the road and restart the car if we do not see that the passenger air bag has not been activated. Restarting the car after she is fully seated ALWAYS detects the presence of a passenger. I believe there is a serious problem in the software initialization routine that locks out the passenger detection routine under certain conditions of the passenger adjusting their position in the seat during the initialization routine. This seems very hazardous as we have actually driven miles before one of us realizes the passenger air bag is not enabled. I am 75 and she is 81, so this might explain why we forget to always remember to enter the vehicle and time the starting of the car just so, in order to have this safety feature become functional."
