Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

With this iteration, the long-running Pathfinder was transformed from a truck-based workhorse into a softer, gentler, car-based SUV with three rows and seven seats. The enlarged interior and easier access moved it closer to a family-friendly minivan substitute. But we found the Pathfinder to be a little too much like a minivan. It's practical but really boring to drive and no longer capable of the off-road ruggedness and substantial towing capacity of the old vehicle.

While it handles most of the everyday-driving basics pretty well, the Pathfinder doesn't stand out from the pack. It has a pretty good ride, decent power and straightforward controls. The second row can slide forward to clear a path to the third row. Kids will probably like the two-person third row seating just fine. Adults won't be comfortable there though, so this isn't a great choice for car-pooling grownups. Furthermore, mounting child seats can be a bit of a chore.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Nissan Pathfinder owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission module and transmission both replaced under warranty"

Jim F., ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission had an intermittent shimmy at low speed in a turn. The transmission was replaced and no more problem"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"The Pathfinder started to make a strange winding noise, car would start to buckle like a horse. Took the car back to Nissan of Woodbury and they stated, much to our surprise, the vehicle needed a new transmission"

Ralph S., NJ (2014 Nissan Pathfinder S 3.5-L V6)

"Multiple trips to dealer with transmission issues until a refurbished transmission was installed"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission was shifting inappropriately when driving the vehicle at highway speeds causing the vehicle to lurch forward/sideways dangerously. The problem took approximately 6 weeks to have corrected by the dealership where we bought the vehicle. They ultimately figured out that the transmission needed to be replaced to be safe again"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Nissan Pathfinder S 3.5-L V6)

"Recall of transmission- replaced on warranty"

Anonymous, NV (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Had transmission replace twice. A lot of visit to service dept with transmison problems"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Numerous obvious transmission fault indications led to Nissan replacing entire transmission"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"had to install a new cvt under warranty at 38000km"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Initial transmission slipped and skipped badly. Replaced on a recall and has worked perfectly since."

Norma M., GA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Had transmission shudder problem in June 2018. Took it to dealer and they replaced the transmission under warranty. Afterwards the transmission did not feel quite right. In Sept 2018 the transmission would start shaking and shuddering under load. Took it to dealer where they replaced the transmission a second time... plus they kept it for 1 month. This 3rd transmission feels better and has not been an issue so far."

Chris H., QC (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"The first issue was with the original dealership. The dealership rebuilt the transmission. It had to be replaced by another dealership near our current residence. (750 miles away)"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"2nd transmission rebuild in 3/2019 @ 30K miles. 1st time was in 2015 with less than 6K miles. Given the low mileage and average, safe driving, this seems like an unreasonable and extensive repair to have had to do twice in under 5 years."

Bryan L., NY (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

"This is a problem Nissan knows happens with the CVT transmissions. The transmission slipped and roughly jerked constantly. They even extended the warranty to 85,000 (I believe) because of it. Unfortunately my vehicle was already over that mileage limit when it started, but we had purchased the extended warranty and it covered the replacement. If we had not had the extended warranty it would have cost over $5,000 to replace the transmission in a 3 year old vehicle. I contacted Nissan about the problem, but they never responded back to me."

Cherri T., GA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Required a new transmission at 62,000 km due to wear on internal chains."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"At 4900 miles our 2012 Pathfinder needed a new transmission"

Patricia F., TX (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission failed at 2000 miles. Took over a week for a replacement. No problems since"

Erik N., CT (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission kept slipping gears. Required a full transmission replacement under warranty"

Anonymous, NH (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission shifted roughly at times, Was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, SC (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission was replaced at ~12,000 miles. Car was shuddering under light acceleration, after transmission replaced the shuddering stopped"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Vehicle was shaking during acceleration just after making a turn (such as a street corner) - whole transmission had to be replaced (covered by warranty)"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

"On the 2nd transmission, with 3 updates on the software. Acting like it's about to go again"

John N., TX (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"at 3000 miles, the transmission failed. Dealership had the car for a week to replace it with a new one. They also replaced transaxle with a rebuilt one after promising to only use "new parts." They also scratched the console. I'm not happy"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"going from a flat grade to an uphill grade the car would shake and not accelerate"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission slipping, tech recommended replacement instead of repair."

Anonymous, OK (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"CVT transmission failed twice under warranty. The first time at 60k miles and the second at 87k miles. The CVT's warranty was voluntarily extended by Nissan due to poor reliability. On the second failure, the transfer case failed as well. Even though the transfer case failed as a result of the failed transmission, Nissan refused to cover the replacement under warranty. Through their consumer claims team, Nissan finally agreed to cover 75% of the replacement cost of the transfer case. $1,200 later, the Pathfinder's transmission and transfer case were replaced."

Anonymous, (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"While driving the car at about 90km/h, there was a sudden increase to about 3000 to 4000 RPMs on the tachometer and intermittent lurching of the vehicle. The intermittent lurching continued for many kilometres with the car driving smoothly at 90 km an hour at times as well but the RPMs remained higher than they should be at that speed. I drove directly to a nearby Nissan dealership. I was told there was complete transmission failure due to a transmission coolant leak. I hadn't noticed any sign of a coolant leak; fluid under the car etc. but had noticed the higher than normal rpms on the tach. over several days prior to the lurching problem. There was only just over 79,000 km on the vehicle and fortunately the repair was covered under basic warranty. They replaced the transmission and its radiator at no cost other than some minor shop costs. I was told that this would have been a nearly $6000 cdn. repair. Approximately one year later there is now 94,000 km on the odometer and there have been no problems."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder S 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission started shifting roughly. Dealer said it had a condemn code and needed replacement. $4000 later with new factory transmission it runs like new again."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Factory recall. I did not experience problems. Dealership rebuilt the transmission at no cost to me and I have had no problems with it since"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

Ralph S., NJ (2014 Nissan Pathfinder S 3.5-L V6)

"the transmission chatters once in a while when shifting from first range"

Florence B., PA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, FL (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"When cold, the transmissions shifts really hard from reverse to first, and first to second."

Todd C., FL (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Sudden acceleration at low speed on start when you have to back off on the gas pedal than re engage"

John R., NY (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, TX (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Jerky shifting"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"the CVT would violately shake the entire car while only driving between 15-35 miles per hour. but only from time to time. Nissan refused to replace the known faulty CVT dispite extensive online and dealer complaints"

Kevin L., CA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"I reported to the dealer that the car was not shifting properly they told me nothing was wrong basicly my imagination , later a factory recall came out on the transmission that needed a software upgrade/update"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission would hesitate or "jerk" when slowly accelerating"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"they don't care about moldings...cheaply made"

Anonymous, IN (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"Driver side roof rail rubber seal became loose and needed replacement"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Nissan Pathfinder S 3.5-L V6)

"This issue has been fixed by the local dealership twice and it is still occuring"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"Back hatch release snapped off the exterior rear molding. It is the only way to open the liftgate on the vehicle. Because the release button is permanently housed inside a piece of exterior trim, our extended warranty would not cover the repair because the contract excludes interior and exterior molding. This was very irritating because while I understand the terms of the contract, I feel it should have been covered because an operational part of the vehicle is housed inside the molding, making it more than a decorative piece of trim."

Bryan L., NY (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)

"Weather trimming is loose on roof. Interior plastics are loose."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, GA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"The paint on this pathfinder has chips that have been there from day one. We picked up the car on a heavy rain day within the next week, I started to see the chips in the paint. The dealer when shown to him said there nothing we can do now"

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"A few days after purchasing the vehicle we noticed that the carpet on the frobt passengers side was completely soaked. This had happened on a couple of different occasions and then it got to the point where it just wasn't drying out. We brought it back to the dealership and they checked it out and found that the weather stripping that runs next to the sunroof had lifted and created a plug redirecting and channeling all rain/water directly into the car."

Anonymous, ME (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The stripping around the top carrier rack came loose in the wind and flapped while driving. The rack was replaced with new stripping"

Anonymous, ME (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Wind noise

"A mud flap came off slightly and had to go to the dealership 3 times before they found the issue--and have to return a 4th time to actually fix it, as they didn't have any in stock"

Nick M., MA (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Continuous problem with ABS within the first 200 miles. It took 6 separate trips to the dealer before it was finally fixed"

Erik N., CT (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Calipers

"The driver's side rear caliper seized and was no longer operational at less than 75,000 miles. I realize calipers can wear out/fail over time, but 75,000 miles is ridiculous. I replaced both rear calipers along with the rotors and pads. The loss of the 1 caliper lead to the other calipers taking on more of the braking load which, in turn, resulted in premature brake wear."

Anonymous, IN (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)
Normal routine brake wear

"Brake just needed to be replaced as part of normal wear and tear."

Anonymous, HI (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"independent repair facilities were not consistant in their diagnosis of the brake issues but did agree the rear brakes required servicing before they should."

Janie T., BC (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

"premature brake wear on the rear brakes, estimated 65000 km on them at that time."

Derrick F., NS (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Regular brake failure

"It started after about 50k miles and was no longer covered by warranty."

Anonymous, HI (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)
Rotors

"Seem to wear quickly"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Backup camera works okay but sonar device (beeper) only works intermitently, shuts off on it's own. The in dash computer appears defective as heat settings change on their own, radio stations change while driving along. Dealer refuses to believe us"

Fred I., ON (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SV 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"The Display Screen goes blank intermittently. Fortunately, this is an infrequent problem, but you cannot observe any of the features controls, like radio stations, temperature or fan speed when this happens."

"During COLD weather, I get 2 recurring problems: 1) I get a 4WD error/notification light on my dash and 2) I can't switch into 4WD as long as this light is on. I believe it to be a KNOWN sensor problem but because I bought it slightly out of warranty they won't cover/fix it. :("

Joseph W., CT (2014 Nissan Pathfinder SL 3.5-L V6)

"When the AWD system was engaged, the car would accelerate with fits. Especially during a turn. Apparently it occurs when the AWD system and the transmission have a miscommunication. It only happened at low speeds, when accelerating from a stop and was much worse when turning (in either direction). Nissan replaced some sensors, control modules, and re-programmed the drive system to cooperate with each other. We were extremely lucky to get this done just under the wire on the transmission warranty. There is no guarantee it will not happen again and if/when it does, it will cost thousands of dollars. It is not a problem a home mechanic can remedy."

"Computer tries to engage 4wd on its own. I unplugged the unit from underneath vehicle to stop this from damaging other drive components. I have no 4wd because of it. No spending big $$ to fix it."
