A car-based SUV, such as the Forester, provides many of the advantages of a traditional sport-utility--all-weather versatility, higher seating position, and interior space. It also offers the comfort and road manners of a car.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"excellent in poor driving conditions using good self judgment"

Anonymous, NY (2001 Subaru Forester)

"The manual transmission makes this car efficient in acceleration even though it is a four cylinder. The short wheel base makes it nimble on two lane twisty roads"

GINEVRA C., CA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Reliability is excellent with scheduled maintenance. AWD makes handling in all conditions easier. Great visibility out the windows has increased my ability to make safe driving decisions. Acceleration while entering a freeway is an asset in this vehicle and also an asset during passing while on the freeway. AWD helps increase my traction in snow & rain road conditions coupled with the excellent weight balance in the vehicle makes this a very safe vehicle to drive."

Anonymous, IA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Really like the AWD. Feels secure on wet pavement. Considering the small engine it has adequate acceleration for merging on high speed freeways."

Anonymous, CA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"More than adequate acceleration. Excellent handling!"

Anonymous, AZ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"I was at a friends house, and a storm hit and knocked a tree down his driveway. I was able to go through his cow yards, a mud track, and a hay field to get to another road."

DAVID M., WI (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Handles well. Acceleration is good but not great."

Anonymous, IL (2001 Subaru Forester)

"All Wheel Drive is so great - while so many others get stuck or fishtail after a big snowfall, we have never once been stuck with our Forester."

VIRGINIA C., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"good acceleration and handling in corners. Stick models are not quite as responsive in snow or heavy rain as the automatics are; operator speed i guess."

Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Corners well and i have the necessary get up and go both on the short trips in town and on the highway."

Anonymous, CO (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Good acceleration and braking. Handles great in any weather conditions. The Forester goes through deeper snow without getting bogged down. I love the all wheel drive."

Michael B., WI (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This is no sporty car, but it does what it needs to do!"

Anonymous, NJ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Good acceleration and handling"

Malcolm-Ardell M., WA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It's peppy, takes corners well, is fun to drive, and is great in snow."

Anonymous, WA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"The acceleration is acceptable. The handling is good; the car is fun to drive on windy roads, and I am highly confident in its abilities. The hydraulic power steering provides a ton of information about the road; you can practically tell when they laid the asphalt from steering feel alone. Driving in fresh snow is positively enjoyable, with winter tires on, thanks to the all-wheel drive. However, the relatively nimble handling in corners comes at a cost to ride comfort and noise. The old Forester is very rattly, and you can feel bad roads in your kidneys. Also, sound insulation is poor all around, making this car very loud at highway speeds."

James C., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"The AWD is so essential to me now that I would never buy a car with 2WD, especially living in a snowy climate. Other than that, the car just feels solid and secure to drive. It doesn’t have zippy acceleration, but my style of driving doesn’t need that."

Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This vehicle continues to be my “ Go To‿ vehicle when driving in snow and winter conditions. Living in a rural area, this vehicle continues to be a lifesaver when snow, ice or wintry mix on roads make driving our other vehicles a challenge."

Arthur G., MD (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Forester handling is secure and comfortable including the minimal turning radius and ability to park in tight spots. Acceleration is fine, although entering highway fully loaded including rooftop rack is a little slow."

Penelope J., AZ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"For the price, drives great and again very good handling"

Anonymous, ON (2001 Subaru Forester)

"After 15 years it is still a good ride."

Les-Nancy L., WA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It is a Subaru and the boxer engine makes for an even smooth ride especially when cornering. The model I chose is a manuel 5 speed which makes it even better in the snow and ice we encounter, in addition the the all wheel capablities. The ground clearance is better then most vehicles, which also helps getting around in incliment weather."

Anonymous, CO (2001 Subaru Forester)

"acceleration is still pretty good, there's good low-end torque for relaxed city driving, and enough power if you need it when revved high. handling is secure, and despite the car's age, still willing and able."

Eike W., MA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Discounting for the fact that it is a 2001 car, the four-speed automatic does not get the best mileage in this day and age. We have always felt that the suspension for this generation Forester could have been made a little firmer without sacrificing the comfort while enhancing the handling, which is not bad but could have been sharper."

Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Passenger seat does not have adequate leg room for tall persons"

Anonymous, WI (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Excellent a/c & heat. Comfortable but some of the detailing is cheap--visors are thin, cup holder flimsy (broken), tape player doesn't work; no cd system or phone attachment. We had a fuel line problem (strong gas odor inside), Also check engine light perpetually on; finally read that it has to do with gas cover not being tight enough."

ELIZABETH P., MD (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It is very hard to move the seat, the handle to control it is awkwardly placed."

Anonymous, NJ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Quiet (for this age), supportive seats"

HIDEKI Y., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Back seats are a little closer than I would like. If/when I purchase another car, I will definitely pay more attention to the back seat."

Anonymous, NJ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"The heated seats worked very well, every winter."

TOM E., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"The seats are very comfortable, even for long rides. The noise level is high though."

PAULA D., CA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Bad - Creaky noises in the dashboard and rear hatch area Bad- Seat don't have enough lumbar support Good- -handling in the snow is excellent and better than most newer SUVs from Ford, Mazda, Honda or Toyota."

ARMANDO J., NY (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Seating is a bit cramped for a larger vehicle."

DAN K., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Seats are positioned well and all the controls are within reach. It rides well and I know I can turn quick and accelerate on a good platform. Noise is limited doors close firmly."

Anonymous, CO (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Really like the heated seat in winter, quick to warm. only negative is turning radius is not great, but really is not a problem."

Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Seat comfort including adjustable lumbar support and heated seats"

Penelope J., AZ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Outside air noise is very loud inside the cab, from air rushing by and maybe from tires."

Valerie J., WA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Our 2001 Subaru Forester is very comfortable to ride even long distance. Plenty of leg and head room. Love the heated seats during the winter months in Wisconsin. The noise was a bit loud until we replaced the tires with Cooper tires. Now the road noise is minimal."

Michael B., WI (2001 Subaru Forester)

"The ride is soft and yet not so much as to impede confidence in riding. For an old car, the noise level has remained decent, if not completely low. The seats are firm, but reduce fatigue in during a long drive."

Hideki Y., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Too much road noise"

Anonymous, IL (2001 Subaru Forester)

"As long as the car is clean I'm satisfied with the appearance."

Anonymous, AB (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Drivers leg position is not that comfortable for me or my wife. Would get electric adjustable seats for next purchase."

Don H., FL (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Seating is comfortable but noise level is high."

Anonymous, OH (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Road noise is poor at best, and you feel the road quite a bit. Rides like a truck despite being a small hatch back."

Anonymous, CT (2001 Subaru Forester)

"front seat comfort is acceptable, but nothing special. noise is fairly low, especially appreciated on long highway trips. the shocks are getting a bit stiff now, compromising comfort, though handling is still very good."

Eike W., MA (2001 Subaru Forester)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I paid only $3,000 to get this car with 185,00 miles on it and now has 235,000 miles with lots of wear items replaced but still cheaper to maintain than buying a new 2016 Forester."

ARMANDO J., NY (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Has held up very well."

HARRY V., FL (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It has a lot of get up and go, plus AWD, but it's also 15yrs old, which means the gas milage is horrible. 19MPG. This was my parent's old car, so I bought it cheap and it just has to last until the Tesla 3 comes out. It will be the last gas burning car I ever own, as electrics are far more affordable in TCO."

JAY B., CA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Very reliable, low running cost, Solid and well-kept after 15 years of use"

HIDEKI Y., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Still going strong after all these years"

Anonymous, KS (2001 Subaru Forester)

"I bought a 5 speed for $1000.00 less than the automatic trans models. fun to drive, good mph and lower maintenance costs."

Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This car has been amazing. It has been so dependable and fun to drive. We have over 153K miles on it and are still driving. The road noise is too loud and the engine sounds are too loud. This may have to do with the age of the car. We are thinking about buying another one and will someday."

NANCY H., CA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It is extremely reliable even though it's 16 years old and has 129,000 plus miles on it. Repairs are not a raving fortune,"

Anonymous, NJ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"The car is extremely economical to drive: repairs are not expensive, the mileage is good and it fits a lot of stuff in it."

GINEVRA C., CA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"I loved this car until the head gasket failed at 237,000 miles. Spent $3700 to replace the head gasket, hoping to run it a few more years, but the new head gasket failed after just 15,000 miles. Now lots of other small problems. It doesn't look as though this one will make it to 260,000 miles, let alone 300,000."

Anonymous, WA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It just keeps on going and going."

Carol M., CO (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Still running good after 200,000 miles. Have received excellent service at the dealership."

Don H., FL (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This car has been awesome. All of it. There have been some repairs, but they are not big, and its been running well for EVER. Its been a loyal family car."

Christy W., VA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This is a 17-year-old car, and yet it is still going very strong. It rides and handles well and remains relatively quiet. The price we have paid for it has long been recovered and continue to pay dividends due to this long life and reliability. The Forester has been a tremendous value to us."

Hideki Y., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This little car has endured. It is peppy and handles well with 4 wheel drive. Frequency of repair has been incredibly low."

Anonymous, WA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It costs $0.126/mile to keep this car on the road since purchase. That is all costs other than insurance and gasoline. Twice what it costs to keep my 2006 Honda Accord Hybrid."

Michael K., MD (2001 Subaru Forester)

"I've owned this car for 18 years and have enjoyed driving it. It is small but roomy and has a lot of pep. I think it's coming to the end of its life for me now but I am very happy to have owned it and am now a loyal Subaru customer going forward."

Anonymous, NY (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This car just keeps on running and is great in snow."

Anonymous, NJ (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It is very reliable...Has large windows on all sides so is safer to drive. All-wheel-drive provides great traction in winter use. It is a great all-around vehicle."

Anonymous, MO (2001 Subaru Forester)

"This car still runs beautifully and looks brand new!"

Laura G., FL (2001 Subaru Forester)

"It is still going strong and true after 16 years in the Minnesota climate, and we fully intend to see it in our garage when it reaches its 20th birthday. The Forester is built tough, performs reliably, and a good people and cargo mover. We have gotten our money's worth, and the money's worth is getting better every year it remains in our service."

Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)

"275,000 miles and still going."

Anonymous, WA (2001 Subaru Forester)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Still remains in style with many of the SUV's around today. Plus it is small enough to fit in almost any parking space...which can't be said for all SUV's."

Anonymous, IL (2001 Subaru Forester)

"Minor accessories, like cup holders, are poor quality. Many of the interior plastics have begun to crack and break."

PAULA D., CA (2001 Subaru Forester)

"VERY GOOD VISIBILITY!"
