Driving Experience
Includes acceleration and handling
What Owners Say
"The manual transmission makes this car efficient in acceleration even though it is a four cylinder. The short wheel base makes it nimble on two lane twisty roads"
GINEVRA C., CA (2001 Subaru Forester)"Reliability is excellent with scheduled maintenance. AWD makes handling in all conditions easier. Great visibility out the windows has increased my ability to make safe driving decisions. Acceleration while entering a freeway is an asset in this vehicle and also an asset during passing while on the freeway. AWD helps increase my traction in snow & rain road conditions coupled with the excellent weight balance in the vehicle makes this a very safe vehicle to drive."
Anonymous, IA (2001 Subaru Forester)"Really like the AWD. Feels secure on wet pavement. Considering the small engine it has adequate acceleration for merging on high speed freeways."
Anonymous, CA (2001 Subaru Forester)"More than adequate acceleration. Excellent handling!"
Anonymous, AZ (2001 Subaru Forester)"I was at a friends house, and a storm hit and knocked a tree down his driveway. I was able to go through his cow yards, a mud track, and a hay field to get to another road."
DAVID M., WI (2001 Subaru Forester)"Handles well. Acceleration is good but not great."
Anonymous, IL (2001 Subaru Forester)"All Wheel Drive is so great - while so many others get stuck or fishtail after a big snowfall, we have never once been stuck with our Forester."
VIRGINIA C., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)"good acceleration and handling in corners. Stick models are not quite as responsive in snow or heavy rain as the automatics are; operator speed i guess."
Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)"Corners well and i have the necessary get up and go both on the short trips in town and on the highway."
Anonymous, CO (2001 Subaru Forester)"Good acceleration and braking. Handles great in any weather conditions. The Forester goes through deeper snow without getting bogged down. I love the all wheel drive."
Michael B., WI (2001 Subaru Forester)"This is no sporty car, but it does what it needs to do!"
Anonymous, NJ (2001 Subaru Forester)"Good acceleration and handling"
Malcolm-Ardell M., WA (2001 Subaru Forester)"It's peppy, takes corners well, is fun to drive, and is great in snow."
Anonymous, WA (2001 Subaru Forester)"The acceleration is acceptable. The handling is good; the car is fun to drive on windy roads, and I am highly confident in its abilities. The hydraulic power steering provides a ton of information about the road; you can practically tell when they laid the asphalt from steering feel alone. Driving in fresh snow is positively enjoyable, with winter tires on, thanks to the all-wheel drive. However, the relatively nimble handling in corners comes at a cost to ride comfort and noise. The old Forester is very rattly, and you can feel bad roads in your kidneys. Also, sound insulation is poor all around, making this car very loud at highway speeds."
James C., MN (2001 Subaru Forester)"The AWD is so essential to me now that I would never buy a car with 2WD, especially living in a snowy climate. Other than that, the car just feels solid and secure to drive. It doesn’t have zippy acceleration, but my style of driving doesn’t need that."
Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)"This vehicle continues to be my “ Go To‿ vehicle when driving in snow and winter conditions. Living in a rural area, this vehicle continues to be a lifesaver when snow, ice or wintry mix on roads make driving our other vehicles a challenge."
Arthur G., MD (2001 Subaru Forester)"Forester handling is secure and comfortable including the minimal turning radius and ability to park in tight spots. Acceleration is fine, although entering highway fully loaded including rooftop rack is a little slow."
Penelope J., AZ (2001 Subaru Forester)"For the price, drives great and again very good handling"
Anonymous, ON (2001 Subaru Forester)"After 15 years it is still a good ride."
Les-Nancy L., WA (2001 Subaru Forester)"It is a Subaru and the boxer engine makes for an even smooth ride especially when cornering. The model I chose is a manuel 5 speed which makes it even better in the snow and ice we encounter, in addition the the all wheel capablities. The ground clearance is better then most vehicles, which also helps getting around in incliment weather."
Anonymous, CO (2001 Subaru Forester)"acceleration is still pretty good, there's good low-end torque for relaxed city driving, and enough power if you need it when revved high. handling is secure, and despite the car's age, still willing and able."
Eike W., MA (2001 Subaru Forester)"Discounting for the fact that it is a 2001 car, the four-speed automatic does not get the best mileage in this day and age. We have always felt that the suspension for this generation Forester could have been made a little firmer without sacrificing the comfort while enhancing the handling, which is not bad but could have been sharper."
Anonymous, MN (2001 Subaru Forester)
"excellent in poor driving conditions using good self judgment"
