Subaru's popular Forester continues to put function in front of form. It stands out from the crowd, resisting the contemporary trend toward making SUVs look like sports coupes with descending rooflines and curvaceous bodies. Instead, the Forester aces the fundamentals with a space-efficient design, large windows, and big square doors.

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Forester)

"As noted in CR, the Forester has a "touchy throttle". Sometimes it almost feels like a turbo lag, without the turbo. When accelerating from a stop, the car will leap forward, even appearing to some other drivers that I want to race!"

Jan K., CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The safety items: lane change warning, auto-braking, warning of cars nearby etc."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"I have the XT model with a turbo so acceleration is excellent. This is very handy when getting on the freeway. Coming from a sports car (Toyota MR2 Turbo) I was expecting a huge decrease in power but that has not been the case. The MR2's handling was superb, so obviously the Forester suffers in this regard but is adequate. The one performance area I find lacking in the Forester is braking."

John A., OR (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Handling is reasonable; Accelerator is WAY TOO SENSITIVE (very non-linear response)"

Jan K., ON (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Acceleration is very good for the type of car. Traction in snow is outstanding"

Patrice M., QC (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Took some gettIng used to initially, moving from Corolla to Forester. I remember commenting initially that it didn’t drive as well as a car. No such issue now though. Also a tad louder than expected and starting it took an extra second which worried me, but never any problems."

"We have a turbo which has excellent acceleration. The braking is very good. The additional safety features of lane monitoring and correcting is great and the feature of collision avoidance has helped us already a great deal. We also like the cruise control that monitors speed."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Subaru Forester)

"CVT was very jerky, especially at low speed shifts. Just last week, they did some type of system update — it is now 75% better. Still like the auto transmission on my 1998 Toyota better though."

Brian D., FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"I'm basically satisfied with the drive and handling. But there are two things that I have some dissatisfaction with. When accelerating from a stop, there can be a "jerkiness" when the gas pedal is first depressed. And there is tendency for the transmission to hesitate after shifting from reverse into drive."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Accelerator or CVT or both are VERY jumpy. Annoying and potentially unsafe, ( jumps when in reverse for instance, with a potential for bumping into car/ person behind you in a parallel parking spot or parking lot. Subaru denies this is a problem. (CR noted it in its reviews."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Just lost my comments! My complaint is my winsheild cracked horizontally from the drivers edge in a thunder storm cold front. Subaru will not fix with my new car warranty. Their inspection concluded a road hazard hit the drivers edge of window. They lost a CA court case on edge fractured windshields this Spring. Subaru can not provide a new windshield for 8 weeks. Total cost $665 installed, Forward TV cameras realignment. $250. I have $1000 deductible, based on my readings of their excellent repair records"

"I love the eyesight package. The blindspot indicator has changed my comfort level of driving."

Sylvia S., NM (2017 Subaru Forester)

"You need an "Other" option because I want to tell you how frustrating it is to deal with all the technology. I like the safety options very much, but I don't use much of the other technology because it's too damn complicated (I'm in my 70s). Your manuals are overwhelming, discouraging, and some controls (e.g. setting the clock with the toggle system) require that I have the dealer explain and demonstrate them. I have friends (in their 50s) who own a Forester and they take their manuals to the dealer and have him do the adjustments because they are as equally frustrated. I've paid for features I don't know how to operate because the AMOUNT of technology is overwhelming. I'll think twice before I buy another (I've bought 4) Subaru."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"turning fast around corners or curves, it skids really easily and right away. Even though it's a Turbo, it doesn't accelerate decently off the line. When the air conditioning is on, not only is it gutless, but it seems to jump forward and back, as if it's changing gears. I don't use any of the gear features, just keep it on the basic drive."

Anonymous, NV (2017 Subaru Forester)

"When the vehicle initially starts moving forward after reversing and making a complete stop the differential/drive train/transmission fails to engage correctly and grinds/slips almost every time."

"Love the Eyesight system, especially the adaptive cruise control. The front collision avoidance feature has saved me once since I bought the car new. The side blind spot warning lights are good, but hard to see at a glance when driving; should be bolder display. The backup cross traffic warning is great in parking lots."

Melvin G., FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"After backing up and shifting to drive, on depressing accelerator there is usually a significant (1.5-2 sec) pause before forward movement. Subaru service says it’s normal. In some situations this feels dangerous."

"The 2.0 liter turbo engine is terrific. Provides strong and effortless acceleration when needed with only a small amount of turbo lag. Engine is very economical for everyday driving."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Subaru Forester)

"It's quick. The steering is a little too sensitive--if you barely touch the steering wheel, the car responds. That's good when you're driving, but if you take your eyes off the road for a second, the car is likely to move into another lane."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The all wheel drive is a true all wheel drive with power applied to all four wheels rather than opposite corners. Snow and ice are absolutely no problem."

Wallace M., OR (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The automatic transmission is CVT and matches the load and engine speed to gearing, and it really works well. Acceleration is not blinding, but very responsive and smooth."

Edward S., OR (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The Forester has very good outside visibility particularly out the rear quarters. Much better than the stylish competition and that is one of the reasons I bought it. Dealer service is good at my dealer. Lots of rear room and head clearances."

Richard A., NH (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Vehicle can hesitate briefly sometime when first pulling into traffic. Sometimes at highway speed drive system seems to skip momentarily. Dealership claims that this is a commonly reported problem related to the drive belt."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"There is an uncomfortable delay when shifting from reverse to drive that seems too long. Others have mentioned this online, but Subaru does not think it is unusual. I haven't had the dealer look at this yet."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"From the time I bought the Forester, it has a lag when accelerating. I have reported it to the dealers service dept, and they say it is normal for a car with a CVT. Other Subarus i have driven don't have this problem, and a Toyota RAV4 with CVT I rented on a trip didn't have this issue. Also, the vehicle suffered a transmission failure when it had 3500 miles on it. A new transmission was installed. The problem still exists."

"It is very safe and will try to correct for driver errors, such as the vehicle ahead of you suddenly stopping, a vehicle or person doesn’t notice that you are backing up and they move behind you, this Forester will apply its own brakes. If you start to drift out of your lane, it will correct your steering.. That is about as close to an autopilot as we could get."

Jerry D., CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Surprisingly good acceleration, and handling. It is actually very nimble on twisty curvy roads. Braking is very good. Because of the all wheel drive it very good on wet take-offs from a standing stop, making possible for no wasted momentum wheel spin. No typical problem with hydroplaning as there is in a car with front wheel drive where the speedometer will instantaneously shoot up to 120 mph when you are only going 60."

Crash avoidance system does shut off often in bad weather due to sensors getting covered, like all others. This is the best AWD system. "The acceleration is good for the gas mileage it gives, and is adequate for driving in Southern CA. There is an annoying hesitation when the CVT engages going from reverse to forward, otherwise it responds well."

V P., CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"So called CVT transmission does not do well moving to and from low and moderate speeds, in traffic. There is no real 'coasting', the transmission is always fully engaged, which leads to an engine braking effect when easing up on the accelerator and initial sluggishness moving quickly to speed up. Both of these are less safe."

Daniel K., IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Acel/decl both not well controlled. Speeds up and slows down too drastically."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Great power, can accelerate fast if needed. Handling is reliable, even in deep snow (with winter tires). A joy to steer. CVT can be frustrating, it can be hard to finesse the throttle, so sometimes I force car into "manual" gear shift mode to overcome this annoyance"

"The best part is the handling. The SUV for it's size is glued to the ground going around turns. If you have to maneuver quickly, this is the SUV you want. The acceleration on the other hand is weak and not always responsive depending on the RPM range you're in at the time. I've driven other SUVs and all of them had better acceleration. "This car is absolutely wonderful in the snow. Better than my last RAV4 which was good but had bad under steer. The Forester is by far the best snow car I have seen. This car has a six speed manual transmission which is really well done. My only complaint is that the car is too quiet and I can't hear the mellow sound it makes as I go through the gears."

Robert M., MI (2017 Subaru Forester)

"I'm a long time subscriber to CR, and follow automotive issues closely. In Jan 2017 I bought a CR recommended Subaru Forester premium non-turbo. The size, mpg and layout were great. The drivetrain had a lurching issue ( CVT? or sensors/ systems issue ) which started on the drive home from the dealer. 4 dealer visits and national Subaru intervention provided the conclusion that due to high NOx readings, (I believe from ambitious programming to achieve lean burn and high gearing- still got mediocre mpg) I should use premium fuel, and GM fuel conditioner. As mentioned, even the dealer supplied tank of fuel produced the issue from day one. Unwilling to take on a project, ( Thanks everyone involved) I took a bath on the trade in. Specific internet searches revealed throttle hesitation, bucking and lurching as a documented issue on Subaru blogs, which did not surface in CR or in my pre purchase searches. So the data can prove trends but not specific issues. Extremely dissappointed in my Subaru "experience". At least I didn't suffer the indignity of oil burning these engines are known for. Forewarned!"

"The CVT or collision computer tend to make a slight hesitation in the driving, I turn off the collision computer but not sure if that's it. Also the CVT doesn't engage right away when backing out of driveway on hill, car rolls backwards for a second or two before going forward, weird feeling."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The car is very responsive and predictable, and feels very safe"

Heather D., OR (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The driving experience of the Forester is perhaps an acquired taste, but for those that prefer the up-high driving position with quick, responsive steering and peppy acceleration (when compared to our Outback), it is a very nice experience."

"Considering the engine size and horsepower, very good acceleration, the all wheel drive provides great handling especially in adverse weather."

Marc S., WA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Good road visibility."

James H., IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Drives like any good gasoline car would."

Marion H., BC (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Quick off the line. Sluggish passing at highway speeds noisy acceleration. Quick handling fun to drive"

Thomas P., OH (2017 Subaru Forester)

"acceleration is to sensitive. Hard to take off slow."

Tracy B., IN (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The Subaru Forester is very quick in acceleration and handles very well for a SUV. Visibility is very good in all directions because of the large windows, and the safety features such as side radar and the back up camera."

Robert J., VA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"It drives and handles like a sports car. The turbo engine delivers 250hp; entering expressways or passing on 2-lane roads is never a problem."

William M., FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The Subaru Forester accelerates nicely and feels solid on the road."

Walter K., IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"It drives very well. It is smooth and take bumps and potholes with no problem. It seems the more you drive it, the better it handles. Acceleration is a bit touchy but not a big concern."

"The driving safety features (lane assist & adaptive cruise control & blind spot warning) are TERRIFIC"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The turbo version of this car is probably the best drive train offered in this class of vehicle. It doesn't have the best handling but given it's class I feel it handles well."

Josh L., OH (2017 Subaru Forester)

"It can merge into traffic without any hesitation. Has a quick response and handles like a race car."

David B., KS (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Punchy acceleration (too punchy if not careful) and feels solid and stable in my hands."

Matthew L., CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Good power and acceleration, as well as excellent fuel economy for a vehicle of it's size. CVT transmission a little choppy at slower speeds."

Michael R., PA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The ride in the Forester is very comfortable. The handling is impressive in the way that it holds the road. Also I love the feeling of safety I get from the brakes"

Tom C., FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Good, so far."

"A little lacking on acceleration. Excellent safety features though."

Thomas D., CO (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Got the 2.5 non-turbo engine with CVT. On hardest acceleration, it really cranks (high RPMs) but does not feel as if it's moving as fast as the 'noise' would lead one to believe. In total, though, it is more than adequate around town and on the highway."

"Powerful engine, responsive, super mileage"

Frank G., NC (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Still a big laggy but good enough. Lacking acceleration smoothness... wants to switch gears back and forth even though it's a CVT. I wish it held a great RPM more in the CVT rather than switching around."

"xt touring turbo, excellent acceleration and mileage"

Stephen-Kris S., WI (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The CVT transmission is very smooth with good acceleration, shift paddles can be used to help slow down and save the brakes."

Wayne M., NB (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Like our 2016 Outback, the 2017 Forester has much better acceleration than our previous Subaru cars and our other vehicles. The real test is when we drive from the Denver area up into the Rocky Mountains. Our previous vehicles struggled to maintain the 65 mph speed limit on the way up the Front Range Mountains on I70. The new Subaru's have no trouble hitting and maintaining the speed limit. On top of that, fuel efficiency doesn't suffer nearly as much on the up hill portion of the drive."

Ronald C., CO (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Good"

Steve H., ON (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Handles extremely well, especially in wet and snowy weather. Acceleration is excellent. Very responsive. Plus great gas mileage."

R N., NJ (2017 Subaru Forester)

"amazing sight lines; excellent acceleration and braking; Eyesight system including adaptive cruise control makes long trips safer and more enjoyable"

Matthew N., AZ (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Excellent acceleration in all traffic at all speeds. Handling in all traffic is excellent. Safety features rear warnings, passing warnings, speed control distance spacers all worked superbly and warned us appropriately and maintained our safety. We could not be happier about this vehicle."

J R., WV (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Smooth acceleration"

Elizabeth C., NC (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The CVT provides a quick response and all of the safety features--eyesight, lane departure warning, back-up camera, adaptive cruise control-- make for a great driving experience"

"great handling and aceleration. A joy to drive"

Knowles C., CO (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The acceleration is amazing, especially with the 3 different drive modes available. The suspension is firm but at the same time handles road imperfections with ease, not jarring."

John H., AE (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Excellent acceleration and handling."

David H., IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Good compromise handling and comfort, does sway a little in corners but handles uneven pavement surface well. Acceleration is spirited despite CV and predictable. Handling in rain and snow is very sure footed, if driven sensibly. We live down a 1500 ft dirt track and the car has no trouble in a few inches of snow, up or down. Overall this car is a pleasure to drive for the money."

Anthony E., BC (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The CVT in this vehicle has taken some getting used to compared to other Subaru's I own with an automatic transmission. The engagement time of the CVT is slow. Extra time is required when changing gears, the accelerator pedal can not be depressed for a couple of seconds. If you depress the accelerator pedal too soon the engine races momentarily and the CVT engages abruptly. While the CVT has a "Low Gear" feature, it is insufficient for going down grades requiring more use of the brakes."

Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Just amazing. The "eye sight" feature coupled with the lane change and blind spot indicators just make it so easy and enjoyable to drive."

What Owners Say

"The ride is kind of rough. I can feel even small irregularities in the road surface. Subaru should put more into the suspension etc. to make it a more smooth ride."

PAUL P., MA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Compared to the 2012 model that I traded in, the 2017 has more comfortable seats and less road noise"

RHONDA N., AZ (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Seats are comfortable but a bit more lateral support and better cushion and more support is always welcome. Road noise has improved but a bit more quite cabin it always welcome but this model is better from previous years."

JULIO O., GA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Forester seat bottoms are a little too short, need additional 2 inches. The new acoustic glass and sound deadening material is a big improvement on the 2017. Suspension geometry changes are improved, however the ride is still a little too jiggly. Next generation needs a 4 inch wheelbase increase, and a more comfortable secure, planted ride. Leave the upright windshield and visibility the same, do not slope or rake it."

"-Like very much the overall driving experience, safety features, turning radius, maneuverability in tight spaces. -Like very much the driver's seat height, comfort, back support and visibility. -Dislike that passenger seat is not height-adjustable, and that using a seat cushion disables the passenger seat airbag. -Dislike the inaccurate outside temperature gauge and inside temperature control accuracy. -Dislike the lack of sun protection and upper windshield tinting, requiring frequent use of a baseball cap to avoid sun glare. -Dislike the cluttered feel of the dashboard, and would much prefer a digital speedometer and no tachometer. -Dislike the complexity of modifying the digital display options for date, time, mileage, etc. -Slightly dislike engine noise, especially outside at startup and inside during acceleration."

"Worst seat I have ever sat in. 1 hour and you have to stop and walk around. Not a comfortable car for long rides"

Joseph P., CT (2017 Subaru Forester)

Sharon S., NY (2017 Subaru Forester)

"I tried many cars, and was a loyal Honda owner for 20+ years; but once I drove the Forester, I was hooked. Very little road noise, good acceleration and handling, and it's very comfortable. There is a luxurious feeling to the interior, and controls are easy to access and use."

Mary M., WI (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Power seat adjustment for the driver is nice, but it would be even better to get that on the passenger side as well. I would also like to note that the Subaru's head rests are the most uncomfortable I have ever used"

Mark B., OH (2017 Subaru Forester)

"the front seats are small and cramped, requiring frequent stops to stretch your legs."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Although this vehicle is very comfortable and I love the adjustable driver's seat and the ride is also very comfortable, the cabin noise is quite loud. The vehicle sounds like it rides rough even though it actually doesn't. If I'm talking on the phone using the built in bluetooth technology, I'm often told that it sounds like I'm driving on a dirt road when in fact I'm very often on a smooth surface. The vehicle has also developed an annoying rattle in the moon roof controls that Subaru can't seem to fix. That alone will make me trade this vehicle for a different brand."

Cheryl S., AZ (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The drivers seat gets somewhat uncomfortable for me after a long ride. Otherwise the ride is very good as is the noise level."

Jan K., CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The doors open 90 degrees and the seat height is wonderful for entry & exit. The one negative factor is that the trunk door doesn't lift high enough. At 6'3" I have to be careful when lifting heavy items into the trunk space. I have struck the top of my head a couple off times on the edge of the door."

William F., IA (2017 Subaru Forester)

Michael W., MD (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Seats are leather and look great. They are a bit firm and the front seats appear to be a bit narrower than other car brands, although for my wife and I they are fine. The real seats are quite comfortable but don't slide back and forth as other car brands allow."

John S., PA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Very comfortable ride, for myself as a driver and for my passengers. By far the quietest small SUV I tested. Great for my many interstate roadtrips. Cloth upholstery has slightly more wear and tear than I expected after two years of ownership due to my dog scratching it and occasional snags from jewelry and zippers."

"Extremely comfortable (6'3") great ride and handling, but irritating rattle in or under right dash area."

John H., WA (2017 Subaru Forester)

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

"The height of the seat makes it perfect for me as I get older and it is harder to sit and stand from the standard lower seats. The noise inside the car is louder than I am used to, being a previous Toyota owner. The seat belts tend to hug my neck a little too much. I have not yet found the perfect piece of equipment that will help to adjust where the seat belt comes across the neck and.or chest,"

"This is probably the most comfortable car I've owned. We drive it between New England and Florida twice a year and it is very easy ride."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

"Front seats are roomy and comfortable. Rear seats are roomy and moderately comfortable, very good for an SUV. Ride is quiet if the windows are up. The vehicle cannot absorb bumps very well since it is very light. The only inconvenient feature is the very large center console in the front, which ALL cars seem to have. This constricts the space a driver has for operating pedals and rubs the right leg on long trips. In my opinion, this was the cause for the "mysterious acceleration" that Toyota had to apologize for several years ago. It had nothing to do with the car mats, although my Forester has grommets and clips holding the mates in place. The acceleration was probably caused by the drivers STEPPING ON THE WRONG PEDAL."
