Subaru's popular Forester continues to put function in front of form. It stands out from the crowd, resisting the contemporary trend toward making SUVs look like sports coupes with descending rooflines and curvaceous bodies. Instead, the Forester aces the fundamentals with a space-efficient design, large windows, and big square doors.

Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

ARNOLD D., VA (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Handling on slippery or snow packed roads is outstanding. Also, it has pretty good engine breaking in "Drive".”

JEROME B., UT (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Room is spacious and comfortable. Don't feel like your i a truck in turns.SMOOTH”

Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Handling is excellent. Steering is perfectly responsive and the car turns precisely as I intended in my use of the driving wheel. I have a clear feel for the road.”

PAUL P., MA (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Drives like a rocket. Love the power and instant speed. Paddle shifters great in the mountains. Nice, comfortable quiet ride. Handles well, feels sporty. Love it.”

JOHANNA K., OR (2017 Subaru Forester)

“It seems a little jerky when I take my foot off the gas”

REGINA H., FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

“drives great”

BARBARA R., WA (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Not a smooth start from 0 mph. Seems to cut out out a little bit.”

GARY A., IA (2017 Subaru Forester)

“I'm noticing engine stalls or hesitates a bit at 1000 rev to 1500”

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Compared to the 2012 model that I traded in, it has more "gitty-up" and handles better”

RHONDA N., AZ (2017 Subaru Forester)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“The ride is kind of rough. I can feel even small irregularities in the road surface. Subaru should put more into the suspension etc. to make it a more smooth ride.”

PAUL P., MA (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Compared to the 2012 model that I traded in, the 2017 has more comfortable seats and less road noise”

RHONDA N., AZ (2017 Subaru Forester)

“The seats are short from back to front, about 1.5" shorter than my TriBeCa.”

Anonymous, AL (2017 Subaru Forester)

“I'm a BIG man. Car is for my SMALL wife. The car is a little tight for me.”

BARRY L., AZ (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Comfort, noise, ride, easy to drive,”

Anonymous, OR (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Seats are comfortable but a bit more lateral support and better cushion and more support is always welcome. Road noise has improved but a bit more quite cabin it always welcome but this model is better from previous years.”

JULIO O., GA (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Forester seat bottoms are a little too short, need additional 2 inches. The new acoustic glass and sound deadening material is a big improvement on the 2017. Suspension geometry changes are improved, however the ride is still a little too jiggly. Next generation needs a 4 inch wheelbase increase, and a more comfortable secure, planted ride. Leave the upright windshield and visibility the same, do not slope or rake it.”

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Forester)

“very comfortable seats, great driving position very good visibility.”

PAUL D., MI (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Bolster padding on left side of driver's seat lacks enough support.”

Anonymous, NE (2017 Subaru Forester)

“still has inside noise on rough roads. Everything is a plus and very satisfied. Love m Forester. This is my sixth one!”

ROBERT C., OR (2017 Subaru Forester)

“I'm 6'10" with extremely long legs. The primary reason we looked at the forester this year is that there is more than enough room for me to drive this car. More than any other vehicle I've owned except for my 1971 Plymouth Duster.”

GREG O., FL (2017 Subaru Forester)

“no air vents in the back seats or far back.”

JOSEPH G., VA (2017 Subaru Forester)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

“Safety features are great, autonomous braking etc.”

T J., IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

“It cost less than the Outbacks I have previously leased, but it still handles good like the outbacks and there is more than enough headroom than I was expecting. Even though the length of the Forester is shorter, the car still feels roomy enough for good leg room for those sitting in back seat, and there is still enough room in the cargo department without being crowded.”

ALBINA L., OH (2017 Subaru Forester)

“I am very impressed with the safety features that are standard with this car. I consider all of these features of great value and most are not found in other cars at its price point.”

GERALD O., IL (2017 Subaru Forester)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“It looks sooo much like the outback that I forget that it is a Forester, and I have always admired the the outback's styling since I started leasing Subaru's in 1989.”

ALBINA L., OH (2017 Subaru Forester)

“large wilndows, big doors excellent drilving position”

JOHN F., OH (2017 Subaru Forester)

“Overall, it's fine, but my new 2017 Forester Premium lacks inside storage compartments that my 2002 Toyota Highlander has. It also doesn't have automatic headlights.I wish I had selected the limited version.”

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Forester)

“I traded in my 2015 Outback for the 2017 Forester because i wanted a boxier car to feel less squashed in the front. Also, the curve of the front let in too much sin. The curve of the back wasn't good for luggage. Also, the Outback length had too many blind spots for me. The Outback wad a great riding car.”

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Forester)
