Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

A comfortable ride, responsive handling, good visibility, simple controls, and a relatively spacious rear seat all combine to make the Impreza easy to live with. The hatchback's cargo versatility gives it an edge in practicality over the sedan version. Sport models come with snazzy wheels and a bit more equipment than more basic Imprezas.

Fuel economy is impressive for an all-wheel drive car, but falls a bit short against other compact cars. Crash test results are excellent, including the difficult IIHS small overlap test. Subaru's comprehensive EyeSight suite of electronic safety features is optional on Limited models. Improvements for 2015 reduced interior noise and significantly upgraded infotainment and connectivity features.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Subaru Impreza owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Sometimes it does not work. After turning the car off, it works again. Works over 90% of the time"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"CD player rejected inserting cds, replaced by dealer as per warranty"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen difficult to see

"The screen is not user friendly. It's hard to figure out how to adjust the radio, set up the phone pairing. The radio goes off when the phone rings - very annoying. I like the Toyota electronics much better"

Oscar R., CT (2014 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The above dash display is often unreadable is bright sunshine, even with the built-in glare screen. LCD portion of the main dsah display is less bad. The analogue gauges are crisp and always easy to acquire and read"

Thomas M., OH (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Every few months, the screen freezes and then goes blank. The head unit restarts and makes a very loud popping sound through the speakers when it comes back on. It is impossible to reproduce."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"It mostly happens when I use the air conditioner on high, which is often since I live in AZ. The display screen will just randomly reboot itself and becomes completely inoperable for it's intended purpose. Even if the audio system is completely off it will still sometimes cycle on and off. This has happened both before and after replacing the car battery."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Can't get it to recognize the music player at all via bluetooth."

"The chip with the navigation system information will not ready any longer and a new card is over $600.00"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Bluetooth pairs intermittently. Have to pair manually each time. No issues on other car with same phone. Dealer wants $130 just to perform diagnostic."

Matthew M., TX (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"constantly drops phone connection, has a lot of trouble with voice commands and also will tell you it is unsafe to make a call and hang up !!!"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"You need to be a technician to pair the phone with the car. Instructions are great if you already know how to do these things. Once installed it works as intended, but I don't like the way it is intended to work"

Oscar R., CT (2014 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"phone book will not download"

Anonymous, WI (2014 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The system is supposed to let you read your texts but it only worked for a few months. Same issue when system was replaced"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Bluetooth phone pairing works only when the car is motionless. When moving the caller on the other end reports they are unable to hear the person in the car because of noise. Two dealers were unable to fix this and we gave up."

Anonymous, TN (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The dashboard system establishes contact with the iPhone, then pairs with it partway - the iPhone speaker is disabled, but the dashboard system fails to play the iPhone's audio stream"

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Appears to be a leak either under the floor where water gets into the drivers side flooring when it rains. When driving it appears worse: under the drivers feet, drivers seat and rear driver's side passenger side feet well. Have yet to find source."

Eric M., MI (2014 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"air conditioner drain filled with sediment and caused passenger foot well to fill with about one inch of water"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"There are several places where the car squeaks both in the front and back of the car."

Linda C., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This car is 4 years old and has more squeaks and rattles than the 17 yr old Honda I drove previous to it. I would say there are 3, maybe 4 distinct rattling sounds. In addition, the clutch squeaks in a rather annoying manner. I mentioned it to Bill Kolb Subaru and before I knew it they had initiated a warranty replacement of the throw out bearing. When I googled symptoms of a bad throw out bearing, I realized my car DID NOT have those symptoms. It was returned to me making the same squeaky noise. One of the mechanics drove with me and indicated that the noise was normal. Just annoying."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Btw 50-60 miles an hour, there's a weird humming noise that no one seems to be able to repair"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When driver's seat is positioned toward the rear to accommodate a tall driver, pops and groans emanate from beneath the dash while driving. When the seat is put forward to suit a short driver, me, the owner, noise ceases. Dealer has not been consul"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The seats move about and make noise. The paneling squeaks."

Linda C., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Uneven tire wear on the back wheels makes for a loud ride even with timely tire rotation. Alignment has been adjusted 3 times but it still seems to loosen over 6 months and the tires wear unevenly, causing a very loud rumble sound."

Ross R., MN (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Intermittent. Annoyance"

Anonymous, (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Right from the beginning I have had a number of squeaks and rattles although I was assured by the dealer that the car had new fittings that would prevent them. There are at least 4 places where they occur. They are a real problem for me"

Linda C., CA (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When depressing and releasing the clutch there is sometimes a creaking noise and sometimes clicks at certain points in the motion. Brought the car to the dealer and they replaced the release bearing. Based on what I read/heard on the internet, the sound I was hearing did not match the symptom of a bad release bearing, and in fact the noises I described are still there. Technician took a drive with me and the noises where hard to hear but he said everything he heard seemed normal to him. I also"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Blower stopped working. Part was replaced by dealer under warranty. Blower is working"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Impreza Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Just like the radio display the AC blower randomly goes to a trickle. If it's on max air out it works better, but anything else it barely works at all, and even on max it'll sometimes go out."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Wiper motor or washer

"I just find it disappointing for I have not had another car wherein a wiper motor stopped working at anytime during the ownership of the car. (This follows the loss of both hydraulic rods on the hatchback failing at 41K with the hatch back crashing down just missing my skull and seconds after I pushed a glass into the back—when I commented on the failure I was told, They don't make them like they use to."

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Very shabby body. Pieces and parts have broken off, more than once. I'm starting to glue & tape parts on so they'll stop falling off. Cracked in several places, taped. Mileage is bad because it takes so much longer than other cars to warm up"

Bonnie W., MA (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Premature brake wear

"Because I bought it from a Nissan Dealer, they could not certify a used Suburu. But they kept it for hours as I sat there and I got a sheet with everything tested and checked off. Very soon we heard squeakin and found out there were NO BRAKES LEFT--had to replace them all. Also, after only a couple of weeks, got a flat on the way to graduation and had to get a ride from our uncle. Turned out all 4 tires were totally warn and I had to replace them all. So much for the checklist."

Steven M., NJ (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch worn out at 62,00 miles"

Anonymous, AR (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"CVT Transmission would growl when accelerating. My concern at the time was warranty coverage, with the mileage being over 36K and 3 years. Turns out the manufacturer extended the coverage to 110,000. I have since purchased an extender warranty!"

John W., IL (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I don't remember if it was during the last 12 months, but at 40,000 miles I noticed a different noise. I took it to the dealer and found it was the transmission. They replaced it because it has a CVT transmission & apparently they replace rather than repair them. They had the car for 3 weeks. I did get a loan car. It was under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"between 36,000 and 44,000 miles a low growling noise was present. AT that time a recall notice about transmission problems came. I took the car in and several days later I got my car back with a rebuilt transmission. At that time it was waranteed for another 100,000mmiles. Warantee repair."

"AT Temp light comes on at highway speeds. Will go off after slowing down for a few minutes. Two dealers said no diagnostic codes were found and were unable to recreate the problem. An independent mechanic said the same, and added that his experience and research indicated this was common for this car and that Subaru was aware of the issue as indicated by a program of extended warranty on the transmission, which consisted of replacing with a rebuilt transmission upon failure. We found multiple reports of people with similar experiences who eventually experienced complete transmission failure. There were also several reports of people reporting that the replacement failed in the same way. This is our second Subaru. The first also had transmission problems the dealers were unable to resolve. We have stopped driving the car and intend to replace it."

What Owners Say

Fuel leaks

"Was driving up a hill and the car failed and had to be towed. I've replaced filters, changed oil, and been running diagnostics. Believe the fuel pump has failed so I am replacing it."

Steven M., NJ (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Oil leaks

"We bought this car since it was advertised to have 33mpg. We actually got 23mpg and the car burned oil! Burning oil means that the excess oil goes out the tailpipe into the environment. This is not an environmentally friendly car"

Chris T., VT (2014 Subaru Impreza Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The oil levels in this car consistently go down without explanation. We had the car in the shop for over a week, and we still experience the same problem. The car uses oil like a thirsty person needing water while hiking across Big Bend National park. I have to top off the oil every month. No signs of leaking on the ground or on the engine. Very frustrating, and it has done this since we owned the car."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The car consumes oil and this is noted as a problem on engines of this model. The dealer is less than honest the last time I had an oil consumption test. I checked the oil before taking it to the dealer for testing and it was 1/3 low. The dealer said it was full but the oil looked new. So either the tech misunderstood the consumption test and changed the oil which he denied or the dealer is trying to pull a fast one"

Robert W., MA (2014 Subaru Impreza Premium 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It uses a quart of oil every 3K miles. The earlier models have a TSB on this but the 2014 cars aren't included. For the two years I've owned it I've gotten the runaround from Subaru and am in process of trading the car in for another make of car"

What Owners Say

Glass defects

"The 4-yr old windshield is speckled from normal abbrasion and appears to chip easily. In addition there is some film or internal defect in the windshield that causes it to appear blotchy when the window temperature is cold and direct sun hits it. For example, on cool mornings when first starting the car, if there is condensation on the windshield I use the wipers to remove it. The windshield then appears clear until I leave my parking lot and turn onto the street with the sun low and shining directly on the windshield. At this point the windshield appears so blotchy that I can't see where I am going and have to pull over. Very dangerous. I mentioned this to the service rep at Bill Kolb Subaru and he assured me that the windshield is not defective. He recommended a product to clean it. I have tried the product and it does not seem to have helped the issue. I have video-taped the phenomenon of the window looking clear and then appearing blotchy once turning into the sun but the service rep still maintained that there must be something on the windshield that car washes are not washing off. In addition, all the glass surfaces cause rain or condensation to bead up. I keep a small towel in the car to wipe down my side mirrors and door windows. I drove a 1998 Honda until it was 17 years old and none of the glass surfaces behaved like this, nor did the windshield chip so easily."
