Overall, the Subaru Legacy Outback is well conceived. Its all-wheel drive powertrain is a major plus on slippery roads. The Outback rides comfortably and its interior is reasonably roomy and quiet. But the wagon has its shortcomings: Normally competent handling can become tricky at the limit, acceleration is a bit poky, and fuel economy is unimpressive.

"head gasket blew lot of miles just replace engine"

Gary T., KY (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Head gasket

"After almost 20 years and 200,000 mile, the head gasket finally need replacement. It was the original."

J W., FL (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Radiator sprang a leak, lead to overheating and a head gasket leak, had to replace head gasket"

Maurice M., CA (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced head gasket at 82000 and 166000"

Anonymous, PA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket required replacement at 150K so to some degree an expected maintenance"

Wilson K., NJ (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket leaking had to pull engine and replace. 2K!"

Christine P., MN (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"needs head gasket replacement for $2500-$3K. apparently very common for Subaru's and ours is low mileage. would not buy another subaru for this reason because mechanic says Subaru hasn't fixed the design flaw"

Anonymous, CA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket was leaking. Replaced both"

Anonymous, CT (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Instead of head gasket it was valve cover gaskets. See prior comment on timing belt"

Anonymous, OR (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The head gaskets are worn out, the car leaks oil and antifreeze into the combustion chamber and leaks because of this. Cost to repair is upwards of $3,000"

Bryan B., CO (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"had 2 head gaskets replaced due to leaking anti freeze fluid"

Anonymous, WI (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Second time the head gasket has failed. Leaking oil form the heads. Mechanics tells me that the head gasket on a Subaru engine will need replacing every 100,000 to 125,000 miles. Other than that it is a good car"

Anonymous, WA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket blew out when engine overheated on a hot day in Arizona"

Stephen A., CA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket failure required $3000 engine rebuild. Reviews on the internet showed this is a common Subaru design problem, but Subaru is of course taking no financial responsibility"

Anonymous, WA (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gaskets were leaking"

Anonymous, OK (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At 147000 have second set of head gaskets failing"

Anonymous, AK (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"2ND HEAD GASKET REPLACEMENT ON THIS VEHICLE"

Ginger M., CT (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Oil leaked into the engine and spark plugs causing the engine to run roughly"

Anonymous, (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This vehicle has had documented seepage/leakage from the head gaskets starting around 50,000 miles in 2005. Previous owners kept the records. In Aug of 2018 (at 236,000 miles), the radiator developed a crack on the back of the top radiator tank. I repaired that & it immediately developed another crack on the front side. I replaced the radiator with a new one and serviced the cooling system. Upon starting the engine, coolant started spewing from the radiator cap at which point I realized that the vehicle had finally succumbed to the well known head gasket failure allowing compression pressures (~90 psi) to leak into the cooling jackets and over-pressurize the coolant. This resulted in coolant blowing past the radiator cap (~13 psi). I immediately stopped using the vehicle and have just stored it until I get a chance to fix it. PLEASE NOTE... my most recent automobile acquisitions are actually a 1996 Toyota Corolla (9/2018) and a 1985 Ford F250 diesel truck (12/2019). The survey parameters wouldn't let me report on these because they are older than 2000 year models. They do, however, run fairly well and have various ailments mostly related to their ages. ;-)"

Anonymous, CA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Timing belt or chain

"When the timing belt broke, the engine had to be replaced due to excessive damage. We were going to total the car, but could not find a replacement car for the repair cost. We live rurally and need the car’s all wheel drive for the rare NC snow/ice storms. We use this as a backup car and emergency vehicle."

Anonymous, NC (2000 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Dealer replaced valve cover gasket gaskets but also should have done timing belt tension work and did not, so a AAA shop had to redo the entire job. Dealer would not acknowledge his mistake. Won't go there again"

Anonymous, OR (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"New timming belt and pullys failed at about 700 mi. Totaled the engine"

Anonymous, NE (2000 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Paul L., MN (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It's an old car. Not anything more than normal aging"

Anonymous, PA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Chris F., ME (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"drivers side rear door area - not door itself. 5 inch hole due to rust"

Anonymous, WI (2000 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear Fenders begin rusting directly centered with wheel. Also rear rocker panel is rusting and will need repair"

Paul L., ME (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Our Subaru has the same issue as many 2000 outbacks. it has serious rust at the leading edge of each rear wheel well"

Paul L., MN (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rust has been developing around the wheel wells and on the fenders at the rear especially on the driver side. All the outbacks from the 2000 and 2001 years have the same exact spots. There seems to be a problem in the manufacturing process that allows all the same models to have the rust at precisely the same place."

Rajan B., ON (2000 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Typical rust around rear wheel wells"

Anonymous, PA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Kristopher H., IL (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"check engine light comes on and goes off periodically, indicating that cat. converter needs to be replaced, but haven't done it yet, too expensive"

Anonymous, NJ (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Check Engine light has been going on and off for about 4 years. We had to get a new Catalytic converter for smog test in 2016"

Anonymous, CA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to put on a third catalytic converter due mostly to a bad coil pack that assisted in the cat failing. With the higher mileage, not totally the cars fault. There was a aftermarket coil pack that was replaced 2 years ago and it began failing, but didn't throw a code until damage was done to the cat. Pricy considering g the age and mileage, but decided to fix since the car is in otherwise good shape"

Anonymous, VA (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Exhaust leaks

"Often smells of gas and exhaust in the car"

Anonymous, MN (2000 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Exhaust pipes rusted through and muffler dropped off"

C S., IA (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car became noisy when in operation. I took it to my mechanic shop and they replaced the muffler and front pipe. It would have been great if they could save the muffler and pipe but they could not be saved. Replaced resonator, muffler, spring bolts and 2 exhaust gaskets."

Anonymous, BC (2000 Subaru Outback Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Pipes

"Small leak in exhaust pipes; required installing a new joint (as opposed to replacing the entire pipe)"

Peter N., MI (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Pipes rusted and muffler fell off"

C S., IA (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The exhaust pipe , actually the tail pipe developed a hole and the car started sounding like it had changed its voice to a more baritone version. It sounded sexy over a certain segment of revs but I had to get it taken care of as well as the rattling heat shield on the exhaust. It was causing too much sound."

Rajan B., ON (2000 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The pipes were only the ones associated with the muffler replacement."

Anonymous, BC (2000 Subaru Outback Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Difficult to fill up gas tank

"Gradually had to replace all parts of the fuel fill system and valves"

Anonymous, ON (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This repair required a $600 removal/replacement of the fuel tank in order to replace failed hoses & valves. The failure blocked the gas filler so we could not refuel the vehicle"

"leaking oil around head gaskets, valve gaskets, and other seals"

Anonymous, NC (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Minor seepage."

Anonymous, GA (2000 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The head gaskets on the engine are leaking both oil and coolant onto the ground. The leaks are very slow, so I never have to top off the oil; but I do have to top off the coolant about once a month. The vehicle has no problem passing smog tests and still runs strong after about 176k miles"

Daniel P., CA (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It's obviously true that the Subaru is known for its oil leaks; I now fill the oil and check the gas. Other than that, except for the loss of refrigerant last month, this car has been FABULOUS!"

Wess D., TN (2000 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"headgasket failure"

"My Subaru is a 1996, not 2000. I could not find a way to start the survey over, but apparently you don't want information on a vehicle this old. The brake failure was on the passenger side front brake caliper and rotor. was dragging and had to be"

Slipping transmission

"Engine sped up in higher gears without accelerating"

Anonymous, IL (2000 Subaru Outback Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission computer

"The Outback Turbo has terrible throttle response. These comments probably would not apply to the base engine. Initial acceleration, to about 15-20 mph, is fine, but then rpms drop and acceleration is barely there. Apply more throttle, and nothing happens for a while, but eventually the car will accelerate again. Very annoying and possibly dangerous. Dealer checked car and agreed that the transmission lugs the engine. He said Subaru had no "fix" at this time. (Or ever??!!) I am very disappointed in the car and may trade it soon. P.S. How could CR not have noticed this issue during its test?"
