What Owners Say
"The back up lights are totally ineffective and you can not see anything on the sides when backing up. Very dangerous!"
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6-L 6 Cyl)"The backup/parking camera has been reliable, but it is vulnerable to dust, ice, and rain, all of which can unexpectedly make it useless until cleaned by hand."

Terrence V., OR (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"Some CD's will not play in machine. It just keeps reading CD and then says Music Not Found. These are even new CD's and Books on CD."
James B., IL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"CD player would not recognize audio books and play them. It would on occasion play an audio book if you loaded it repeatedly until the system recognized it. Subaru replace the CD player along with the Nav system and the problems were fixed. It was under warrenty."
Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)"Cd player wont work and cannot be repaired. Replacement requires changing the entire infotsinment system."
Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6-L 6 Cyl)"Very hard to see in daylight, impossible if sun actually hits it"
Anne G., OR (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"Today was a sunny day and I cannot read the dash control screen to see if the AC is on or off, or the outside temperature or the time of day. The GPS and Starlink both do not work well or at all at times but the poor Display Screen for the controls and the XM Radio are so bad and so poorly designed they are a safety hazard showing no customer input at all. I have owned 4 Subaru but this is the last one! Never again will I purchase such a poorly designed auto. Designed by Japenese engineers and n"
Robert L., MI (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"The display screen will freeze when using Navigation. This happens to me when out of town (when navigation is most needed). It happened most times I drove to Los Angeles, but not in Northern Ca. The dealer replaced the unit, and it has not frozen, but Navigation performance is not good."
Marvin B., CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"The display screen froze up when I had the nav system up. The clock stopped working and the nav system quit working. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a fuse that wasn't making contact. I have since had the radio freeze up on me 3 to 4 times but I haven't taken it back to get it checked out. If I shut the car off and restart it things seem to reset and are fine but I know I shouldn't have to do that."
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"I think I have described the problems in my last comment. I did not want to give the impression I was not inclined to answer. Love the car - so far - It is our long distance travel car and we do not drive around our home town."
Paul H., ON (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"While driving on longer trips, the head unit freezes. The only way to resolve the issue is to restart the engine, which reboots the system. Subaru is unable to diagnose the problem since it does not occur at the dealership. They denied a request to replace the unit. Awful."
Jeff H., NJ (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"The screen that controls everything has frozen up twice. It seems to be a computer glitch. It fixes itself on its own after an hour or so."
Angela W., FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"This is related to my other problem regarding my GPS unit."
Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"For no apparent reason, the navigation system, including the car’s clock and the operation of the audio system, freezes and remains so until the car is stopped, turned off, a pause, then re-started. I have informed Subaru that this is unacceptable, with a scheduled service in a few days to resolve it. I hope."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"The display screen freezes up. I took it to the dealer after it happened the second time. Since it was an intermittent problem and it did not do it in the shop, they declined to deal with it. I insisted that the problem was recorded since the car was still under warranty at that time. It is not on warranty any more. The problem has begin occurring again. I believe it is warm weather related. Big concern for me, one that could result in my unwillingness to purchase another car from Subaru, even though this is my sixth Subaru."

Gordon J., MS (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)"After a long search, Subaru mechanics found a dead mouse under one of the sensors for the Driver Assist technology. The problem was resolved and I paid nothing. So..an act of nature which does not reflect badly on my Outback."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"I had been driving for about 7-8 hours (from Toronto, Canada, to Poughkeepsie, NY.) I had been listening to podcasts on my phone through the car bluetooth system. and then the radio/dashboard system shut down. I could still see the mileage, and the speedometer. But I remember calling my partner (who owns a limousine company and is very knowledgeable about cars), and he said to just shut those things down and let the car rest. I did that and haven't had the problem since. That was about a year ago. I mentioned it to the subaru folks when I took the car in, but they couldn't find anything specific."
Christine H., NY (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)"Once it freezes - nothing else works....Cannot use GPS (which totally sucks & I have external GPS), cannot change radio, use bluetooth for calls etc - everything is frozen. Sometimes if you pull over and stop, shut car off & on - it resets itself. Subaru has replaced it once & it did help but still does it occasionally. Also MAJOR problem with Sirius radio & subaru radio not displaying channels & more - took over 6 months to resolve (I canceled sirius due to the issue)"

The GPS screen froze several times during navigation and late worked again only when I turned the car off and turned it back on. But in the middle of a strange location on a high speed highway, I would call that an unacceptable problem. At the time, I only owned a flip phone, so it was really disconcerting. Solution was that they replaced the whole dashboard unit."

The only way to get it working is to pullover and turn the whole car off and back on. We have taken both cars to dealership for this issue. First the couldn't replicate it; then they said software updates would resolve (they didn't). This touchscreen fail is really the only issue we have had with our Subarus (aside from the Impreza's characteristically weak air conditioning, but we knew about that going in)."

It took almost two years of drained battery problems and even destroyed batteries to get the TMU replaced by Subaru. Finally, it was resolved, despite Subaru warranty conditions that make it extremely difficult to "prove" that a phantom drain by a defective component is occurring. In addition, just after the defective telematics module assembly was finally proved by the dealer to be defective, the Starlink unit failed, exactly as the warranty expired. I did not bother to spend $700-800 dollars to replace the failed system."

I don't trust the system at all. I have updated maps but it is the worst system I have ever experienced. Subaru said this problem along with the rest of the issues with the radio is a software problem and it is in the 2017 and 2018 cars. I have called Subaru several times. It appears they can not fix it. I am extremely disappointed and plan to get a different vehicle because of it."

It tells me to turn before gas stations that have been gone for about a decade. It tells me to take the next left, then says recalculating route when I do that. It takes me in bizarre directions.
