The Subaru Outback has a quiet cabin, a spacious rear-seat and a capacious cargo area. Handling is good in routine driving, but clumsy when pushed to the limits. With its four-cylinder engine and CVT, the Outback gets very good fuel economy for this class. Acceleration is just adequate, though, and the engine can be noisy when it's pressed. The optional six-cylinder engine is quieter and quicker, though less fuel efficient.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2011 Subaru Outback owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"I use my phone for navigation. Not being able to recharge the phone in the car is a source of stress and inconvenience. I had to buy a portable battery pack to recharge on long distance trips. I have the additional task os remembering to recharge the battery pack. The issue is that the spark plugs blow. The dealer changes it and to blows within 2 days. The suggested solution is to change some of the electronics for $400, but they cant say that this expensive fix will actually fix the problem."

Body control module

"The problem simply came out of nowhere. Thankfully we were almost home when several dashboard warning lights cam on. We limped into our driveway and the car was inoperable. It had to be towed to a dealer where the problem was found in the rear of the car. Seems the electrical parts associated with the trailer lights was bad causing the whole car to shut down. The mechanic didn't say specifically but suggested the issue occurred as a result of poor installation techniques. The parts were replaced and done correctly and all was good. Several hundred dollars later. This is not the first issue I've had with this car."

"Electronic parking brake would not release. I had to manually release it using the supplied rod, in the spare tire area. It turned out to be the actuator. Coincidentally, Subaru just announced an extended warranty right after I had the problem, so it was repaired/replaced under warranty. The dealership was not aware of the warranty, but was able to look it up. It seems odd that they were not alerted to the extended warranty (I received a mailing). Or it is possible that they were alerted, but the specific service advisor I was with was not aware of it."

"Parked in a downward sloping parking lot. Put the emergency brake on. Went inside store, came out and brake wouldn't release. The car wouldn't move. Looked up the information in the manual, found the small wire tool in the tire compartment, did as the manual stated, emergency brake released. Drove to dealer, the emergency brake light wasn't flashing by the time we got there. They said they couldn't do anything with it without the light blinking. Took it back while it was blinking, and by the time the dealer got to it, it wouldn't blink. Finally got it there and the light was blinking and the emergency brake was replaced, at a cost, of course. This took over two months to get done."

"Faulty torque converter was replaced under warranty by Subaru dealership. Symptoms were typical of a faulty torque converter - shuddering at certain speeds under light acceleration. Problem emerged early in vehicle's life, but 1st visit to dealership"

"Torque converter failed Subaru paid for two thirds of the repair"

"When coming to a stop, the RPMs will drop and the vehicle will shudder as if you're about to stall in a manual transmission when you let the clutch out too far."

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Valve body replaced at 5 years and one day from purchased. Subaru repaired under warranty. I don't trust CVTs now"

"The transmission problem became apparent about a year after buying our used Subaru Outback. The problem gradually got worse and eventually needed to be replaced."

"Transmission would not release coming to a stop, killing engine. Just beyond the extended warranty for this problem (100,000 miles). Subaru paid for half of the repair."

"The car will stall when stopping suddenly. Dealer said it was a problem with the CVT transmission and need to be repaired. Subaru refused to help with payment of repair even though the cars have a history of this problem. Probably would not buy another Subaru"

"Reverse gear became inoperable so I had to park where I did not need to reverse. All other gears worked fine. I took it to a local repair shop and they ordered a rebuilt transmission. That one had the same issue with the reverse gear. Then they had my original transmission rebuilt and had to order a part from Subaru to fix the reverse gear. I was without my car for about 4 weeks while they figured all this out. They also replaced the clutch and flywheel. It's not as good as it was before all of this and it was a very expensive fix. But, I love driving manual transmission and those cars are getting harder to find."

"The transmission died 9 months after an extended warranty expired. We had no problems until 130,770 miles and had to pay $2500 to get the car operational. The dealer was not willing to give us any discount for what was a known issue. I assume they considered us lucky that we were able to drive the car past the 100,000 extended warranty that expired 7/31/18. But there are two additional transmission parts that may wear out so we are no longer assuming our Subie will give us 200,000 miles."

"Lights started flashing on the dash (Cruise, traction control, check engine, etc.), and later started to make jerking movements. Subaru stated the diagnostic codes were for the transmissions' valve box/body that resides within the transmission. At 148K for a supposedly reputable brand of vehicle, Subaru denied any assistance. It cost me $1,500 to have the valve body replaced."

"We experienced the symptom of a known recall - engine nearly stalling as if it were a standard transmission and you didn't disengage the clutch. A dealer replaced the torque converter - not the CVT - under this recall. A few months later, a squeal could be heard accompanied by a hesitation or lurch at highway speed. The same dealer diagnosed this as the CVT. The recall warranty had by now expired, and this would cost $4000 to repair. We called and then wrote to the regional manager. They refused initially, and eventually agreed to cover the cost of the repair. The CVT was replaced by a rebuilt unit."

"Refer to Subaru Technical Service Bulletin 16-107-17R. Subaru had bad batch of transmissions. Mine was replaced and warranty of entire car extended to 10 years, 100k miles! What a super move on the part of Subaru! I feel as if I have a new car now and it cost me nothing!"

"My Outback had the same transmission problems that many Outbacks had but I was outside of the window to have it replaced at no charge by Subaru. We contacted Subaru and they readily agreed to replace the transmission free fo charge. The problem I was having with the transmission had actually been a problem from when it was new, but I chalked it up to my not being accustomed to a CVT. It runs perfectly now. Subaru even sent us a Bose Bluetooth speaker for our troubles with an apology. I already was a Subaru customer for life but this experience cemented it."
