The Subaru Outback has a quiet cabin, a spacious rear-seat and a capacious cargo area. Handling is good in routine driving, but clumsy when pushed to the limits. With its four-cylinder engine and CVT, the Outback gets very good fuel economy for this class. Acceleration is just adequate, though, and the engine can be noisy when it's pressed. The optional six-cylinder engine is quieter and quicker, though less fuel efficient.

Anonymous, VA (2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Head light lamps have a short life, and require a visit to the body shop to replace. Much of the front body work must be removed to replace a bulb. Only applies to headlamp, high beams are serviceable. Factory has recently recognized this and now has a 10 year warrantee on head light bulbs. Doesn't help with the 5 I had to replace before the new policy (There is a mechanism to reimburse, but I didn't keep receipts.)"

Are difficult to replace as you have to remove the wheel well shroud (and I find it easier to remove the wheel), then almost blindly have to remove a plastic ring, undo the light connection, undo the spring retainer, then replace in reverse.. Terrible engineering!"

D K., WA (2011 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Headlights had to be replaced because the Automatic light sensor turns them on/off too quickly even in broad daylight, for example, when passing under a bridge. At least Subaru covers this under a voluntary warranty extension program"

I just had 90,000 major maintenance, and two days later the daytime running light is out on passenger side. The dealers have not been forthcoming in stating a problem with the headlights as I have heard from other Subaru owners that they too have had headlight problems. "Front headlamp bulbs seem to burn out every 12-18 months. I've never had this happen before. The dealer offered to change them out for $165. I bought new Sylvania H7 bulbs at O'Reilly for $14 dollars, and had my trusted local mechanic change them out for me. It took him 5 minutes to replace through the access panels in the front fender wells. He did the replacements free of charge since I am a loyal customer. The dealers flat time estimate of one hour of labor is a rip-off! $165? Not likely!"

"Headlights burn out every 5,000 miles. To replace it, the front bumper is supposed to be removed, expensive job. Subaru did a recall to replace the headlight but it takes two weeks or more to get an appointment, useless. Bad design and bad support for a design defect. Having to remove the front bumper to replace a headlight is an unexcusable design error. But there are no laws preventing this."

"Since purchasing our 2011 Outback, we've replaced a low beam headlight at least 8 times. The last couple have been covered under a warranty extension resulting fromf a lawsuit initiated by a Subaru owner. Even though the bulb changes are free now, I still have to take the car to the dealer and wait around 1-2 hours for it to get replaced.
