The Outback wagon has long been a popular all-wheel-drive alternative to a small SUV, especially for those living in more northern climes. It's a very practical package, with great visibility, a roomy back seat and a spacious cargo hold. Fuel economy is a class-leading 24 mpg overall. The four-cylinder version has long been impressive, but the Outback isn't exactly a pleasure to drive.

I got the dealership involved and their assistance was very helpful however the company that provided the chip and the map service "Here" was impossible. Abysmal customer service. The dealership was astonished at the lack of concern for customer relations from "Here". "CR has reported problems with the Subaru Bluetooth systems in the past, and ours is no exception. The phone will pair but it must be re-paired every time the vehicle is started. Very annoying, but I have not dealt with it yet."

"Bluetooth works intermintely."

David Y., WV (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Hands free phone system is inconsistent. Sometimes it does not recognize phone it is paired with. Sometimes it can't find names in phone directory to dial. Sometimes it dials the wrong number when asked to dial by number. Sometimes it doesn't recognize phone until a number is dialed by hand, then hands free system will start."

Phil R., AZ (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"System indicates it needs to update roaming with a message that covers almost the entire screen (unable to use navigation while this message is up) and you can't ignore the message or read the message. You must un-pair the phone to get the message to stop coming up. PITA"

Richard A., SC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MI (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The radio problem was caused by water getting into the system because the drains in the sunroof became clogged. This sunroof drains must be cleaned several times a year or they get blocked by pollen, etc. This is a real problem. The electrical problem cost me over $600 to fix. I love my Subaru, but I would never get one with a sunroof again."

"Recommend more reliable bulbs"

Anonymous, MD (2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Barbara B., NC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had to have 5 exterior lights replaced at the same time. However, this is the first time the bulbs went out since I got it (4 years), just funny they all went out at the same time"

Jane M., IN (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NH (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"As a matter of safety when driving no matter the time of day. I drive with all lights on, including fog and headlights [low beam] which includes marker lights etc. 24/7. The rated hours on lights that I would consider non priority other then fog/headlights/rear/brake is very low. As such the dealer is replacing lights faster I feel is normal. But on checking the rated hours for these lights they do have a manufacture rating that is a very short life compared to major system lights. This is nit picky I know and is the only thing I really can say that is negative about the vehicle. Which to me that says a lot!"

Anonymous, NH (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Puddle Lights is the name Suburu gave a lighting option. The lights would illuminate the ground beneath each of the four doors. They didn't last too long and the dealer said they (whole harness) would have to be replaced. The quote was prohibitively expensive. The lights were very nice and handy while they worked."

Martin G., QC (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The headlights have burned out at least twice in the last two years. You have to remove the tire and wheel on the burned out side, then remove the fender liner, then reach up through to the front of the car and take out the old light bulb and replace with new. Basically you have to have a lift or jack the car up or be a contortionist (sp) to change the headlight bulbs."

A mechanic installed the replacement bulb by taking off the entire front bumper of the car because he couldn't figure out how to replace the bulb otherwise. After he replaced the second bulb, we have a hard time driving at night. it feels as though the lamps are aimed toward the sky rather than toward the road. As of now they propose to replace the wire harness and the ECM...at a cost of about $2000, my expense. A Technical case has been created, however there is no action underway to find the true root cause. My car is not the only one exhibiting this problem. The car is unsafe to drive. Wayne S., NH (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The excess noise from the engine may or may not be the cause of my car dying in the middle of the road and not being able to start it again. After about 20-30 minutes I was able to drive. It only happened a couple times. Now I do get hesitation but it does not dye on me."

Anonymous, CT (2013 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"There was an ECM flash performed which did not solve the issue. In my understanding, engine pinging is usually due to engine timing, but since engine timing is controlled by the ECM, these settings shouldn't change. My presumption is that fuel is not at the octane level that is advertised."

Dealer has (at our expense): 1. performed oil consumption test, 2. cleaned PVC valve, 3. replaced PVC valve, 4. replaced oil level sensor, 5. added Lucas oil additive. Roger W., OH (2013 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine oil consumption. Subaru recognizes the issue but because dealership overfill with oil, issues are not identified. For instance, an oil consumption test is done in conjunction with an oil change. The amount of oil during a change is 5.1 qts, but because mechanics put 5.5 qts, because of poor training, the engine never fails the test because it doesn't meet the threshold of failure for the oil consumption test. I regularly burn 1 qt of synthetic oil every 2500 miles, without fail! The consumption test says the engine must burn more than 1/3 qt in 1200 miles."
