The Outback wagon has long been a popular all-wheel-drive alternative to a small SUV, especially for those living in more northern climes. It's a very practical package, with great visibility, a roomy back seat and a spacious cargo hold. Fuel economy is a class-leading 24 mpg overall. The four-cylinder version has long been impressive, but the Outback isn't exactly a pleasure to drive.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water leak cased rear floor to get flooded, chronic musty odor. Clogged drain of some sort (sunroof?)"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There is a gap in the seal on the back hatch window of the Outback which allows water to leak into the cabin when heavy rains happen."

Anonymous, IL (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the third brake light at the top of the rear hatch does not seal properly and allows water to leak into the compartment. to repair requires replacing the entire assembly, for $600"

"water leaking from sky view window. Dealer unable to fix properly"

Anonymous, (2014 Subaru Outback Unsure 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The past few times I opened up the hood of the Outback, I noticed indications of possibly a water/coolant leak. I have not had this checked just yet. The other issue that I have been having is that the oil light comes on roughly 1,000 miles before the recommended 5,000 mile oil service change, in which I have to put in about a quart of oil in order to have the proper oil levels. There are no oil leaks, so I am assuming that the Outback burns engine oil. Also note that I am using Amsoil full synthetic oil with Amsoil oil filters."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"a/c evaporator hose plugged up causing water to leak into the car. Dealer sprayed out the hose to resolve the problem."

"Small water leak in rear hatch left side during heavy rain storms when parked."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Heavy rains would cause wet floorboard carpet in back seat and rainwater observable in rear cargo area. After talking with service rep at dealer, took it to local service provider (dealer is 100 miles away) and asked if they could clear the drain holes on the sunroof. Also requested they do what ever was needed to rear tailgate. Sunroof leak appears to be fixed. Back still leaks sometimes"

Anonymous, GA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I believe the seal/weather stripping might be part of the cause of all the noise I hear when we are driving and I'm sitting in the front passenger seat. The air leak is noisy and creates a draft in the winter."

"Driver window coming out of channel, safety switch stopping window going up, intermittent (fixed). Chain (?) noise from transmission (?) that has since stopped. Rear lid leaking top right. (Can't find it.)"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had two leaks, one from the sunroof, which the dealer said was due to the drain lines plugging with dust (I never use the sun roof). The dealer cleaned the drains at no charge. The other leak was from the high mount stop light housing on the rear lift gate. The dealer said that because the vehicle was out of warranty, I would have to pay to fix it, and quoted a couple thousand dollars based on headliner removal and replacement. That didn't make sense as the lift gate is external. A body shop, which said leaks like this are common on Subarus, said they could fix it for a lot less, but I'm waiting for it to rain again so that I can show them the problem."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I have an issue with the way Subaru does NOT give either a printed pamphlet or timely email reminders of scheduled service work. Also, the service department could use lessons in clearer communication of proposed and costly work. I very nearly had to pay an additional $600. because the calipers could have been damaged due to me not knowing when to service the brakes. As it is, I paid over $1000. to have a Level 2 service done on my car. This seems very high. ALSO: the Subaru service department charged me for work I had already had done (oil change and tire rotation) and the service man became very demonstrably angry when I told him that I was being charged for work that had already just been completed a month earlier by other service shops. The manager approached me privately and I told him that I did not appreciate the other man's simmering rage and that I felt intimidated by such behavior. As a woman, I feel especially taken advantage of by such tactics and in the future, I will not be returning to this dealership (where I purchased my car) for any service needs."

"Brakes have been replaced after only 38,000 miles. I am not a heavy braker. Calipers also needed replacing"

"Rear driver side pad seized no warning ruined the rotor oem pads were not lubricated no sign of any lubricant's on guide areas or pad replaced with after market pads and rust proof rotors drilled and slotted and no rust after sitting for a week or more much better than oem. the oem shouldn't have failed they would over night a lite surface rust that would clean up after a few I'm.. I have a 99 Tacoma with 74,000 oem miles still has original brakes"

Regular brake failure

"I had no trouble but my mechanic told me that the brakes were rather worn"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Brake started to feel spongy. The car seemed to have lost most brake fluid when I almost got to the dealership. At that point I needed to floor the brake pedal to stop. Turns out the brake line kept corroding over the summer while it was mostly parked inside garage, although I pressure washed undercarriage carefully before putting it in storage in spring. The car was out of warranty, but apparently it was an issue that Subaru had to deal with before, and about half of the repair cost was covered by Subaru."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Don't have many miles (35,000) had ro have new breaks on left rear tires replaced twice. Only that wheel."

"Rotors warped prematurely."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"At 105,000 the mechanic showed me where the rotors wore out sooner then normal due to the metal was very pourous when poured to originally form the rotor on both front wheels."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The pulsing and vibration in the front rotors was due to warping. They were out of spec to be turned down. They needed to be replaced. That cured the problem."

Anonymous, OR (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"rear rotors failed and had to be replaced along with clippers. Front roots also wore out and had to be replaced"

Jane W., TX (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MD (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Should have had better quality product plated rust proof rotors drilled and or slotted. for rotors they were ruined due to siezed pad I replaced all four rotors drilled and slotted plated and ceramic pad .for the same cost of the two rear rotors only.only one side was totally gone but the rest were uneven. come on Subaru get with it!"

Bohdan B., ON (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Squeaking

"Squeaking in front passenger side during braking appeared shortly after purchase (used) from Subaru dealer. Dealer 'repair' held for about a year. I took it to a independent repair shop. 'Repair' held for about a year. Took vehicle to a different local Subaru dealer for a promotional free braking system check, but did not notify them of the issue. This dealer didn't even report noticing the issue. Apparently the free checkup did not include the technician taking a ride in the vehicle."

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Auto pulls to right...dealer consistently denies there's a problem..alignment is set to factory specs.I put 2 lbs more air in tires on opposite side..that helps somewhat.some have suggested different alignment specs have helped"

Anonymous, IN (2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
