Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

“When I shift from reverse to drive the camera does not go back to its normal display it stay with the image from when I was backing up or the screen goes blank. Eventually the screen does go back to the correct display of the electronics or navigation. Subaru has a TSB on this and it requires the electronics be reprogrammed. Had it replaced and was working better but still consistent issues with lag in back up camera showing when in reverse and sometimes the guidelines don't show up either when reversing. Larry K., ON (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

“At night, the display screen is much too bright when in back-up display mode. It is so bright that it blinds me as the driver, and I have to cover it up to see anything. This means a) the backup camera is useless at night, and b) it creates more danger than if there were no backup display at all”

Anonymous, TX (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Glare from shiny screen makes display hard to read in most conditions and the glare can be a safety issue if at a glancing angle”

Anonymous, NE (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“On days when it is very sunny, and the sun shines through the car windows, the screen becomes a picture of zig zag lines and cannot be seen at all. This impacts the Navigation system , the radio, etc”

Anonymous, CA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, WA (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Dealership is over 1 hr. away & a local car dealer said I had to go to Subaru, would take 1 hr diagnostic test. Online support does not exist. I tried Subaru website & navigation company website. All said I had to go to the dealership”

“It is not reliable. It will tell you to take exits that you know are wrong, it is impossible to get the clock set when the time changes, the dealership had problems. Also, when the time does change and you make the adjustments the arrival time does not change and is one hour off. Its really frustrating. I would not buy another subaru because of this reason also”

Anonymous, IL (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

“Navigation system is unreliable. Accurate most of the time, but not always. Will direct you to the wrong address, then direct you to the correct address. Dealer has not been able to repair”

John S., BC (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

“We HATE the GPS. 1) Using the touch screen often requires multiple touches or corrections and distracts from driving. 2) We cannot mute the voice directions. 3) the maps are out of date & Subaru want $$ to update. We generally use Google Maps on our phones”

Anonymous, CA (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

“When bought, the voice was intermittent. They replaced a part and it works now. However, the Nav system is the most rudimentary I have seen on a recent car. It speaks in cave man talk "Turn right at corner" and does not name streets even though that function is turned on in the settings. The tracker is consistently about 100 feet off ("turn right in 100 feet) - when I am literally in the middle of the intersection). My old dash mounted Garmin was much better and so is my Google maps phone”

Jeffrey S., CA (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

“Difficult to see in the daylight, resulting in using my old original GPS for navigation”

Max R., NY (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“GPS occasionally(not frequently) is not accurate as compared to Google Maps. GPS does fine with straightforward directions. Occasionally when complicated/tight turns are involved it seems confused. This is not frequent”

Anonymous, PA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, GA (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Navigation system would quit giving verbal directions, screen would freeze up, radio would not respond and would eventually shut down and the screen would go blank. Dealer is replacing Navigation/Radio system, covered under warranty!”

William S., PA (2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

“The voice is often cut off and does not sinc with the visual map. This requires me to look at the map to follow directions and take my eyes off the road”

Fuel cap

“In winter, fuel cap froze closed 2x. Brought in for service, was told there was a service bulletin--repaired. Then fuel cap opened intermittently on its own. Brought in again and they said it was a cable--repaired. Disappointing for a new car! (11/14”

Robert P., TX (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“EyeSight system shut down repeatedly. After many trips to the dealer, it was found that the fuel cap leaked pressure, resulting in the EyeSight system to shut down”

“Leaked freon. Replaced before warranty expired”

Glen K., FL (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Automatic climate control

“The automatic climate control is tied to the engine. During cold weather it brings up the RPM to increase the temperature to the passengers. During a very cold period hear in WI (0-10 above) I traveled 19 miles one way and the engine never went below”

Michael S., WI (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The system keeps the temperature at a degree set by the user, however, the system alternates between heat and a/c to keep it there. The old system you got to the desired temperature and it kept pumping air at that temp. The new system is one that i will not buy in another car with automatic controls, which means i will not be buying a subaru”

The dealer refuses to take any action. (There is a whole list of defects on this car that the dealer refuses to try to fix.) Pardon my french, but Subaru sucks”

Anonymous, NY (2015 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

What Owners Say

Antifreeze leaks

“I detected a strong antifreeze odor whenever I drove long enough to get the engine hot. Also, when I drove the Outback 500 miles each way to Montreal in the summer, I checked the antifreeze overflow bottle and it was below the empty line. I filled it to the full line when engine was cold. I continued to smell antifreeze whenever I drove enough to get the engine hot: say 50 miles or more. I tended to lose about an inch of antifreeze for every 1000 miles. I brought this to the attention of two S”
