What Owners Say
"Acceleration marginal due to 4 cylinder engine. Handles fine. We really like the Eyesight safety system--major reason we bought the car."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is very slow"
Henry P., MT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Enough power and well designed adapted cruise control"
Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Outback)"feel very safe driving th eoutback"
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent SUV that handles Alaska winters like a champ!"
Anonymous, AK (2017 Subaru Outback)"Love the "eye sight", adaptive cruise, all safety features."
Jack A., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"For a larger car, it handles well, and has very good acceleration. plenty of power."
Douglas T., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The excellent gas mileage much the same as our 2017 Forester. I love the "tap shift" feature when decending grades. The safety features are truly amazing. We have owned 13 Subarus in the past 20+ years and have seen constant improvement in each one through out that time."
Donald T., OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"The performance of the 2.5i 4 cylinder is very good. Normal driving and acceleration meets all requirements We could ask for."
Robert T., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Pickup good when merging into traffic"
Carl S., CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"First, I have owned many vehicles in my 72 years. That includes muscle cars in the 50s and early four cylinders. The four cylinder in the Outback gives me all the power I need on the mountain roads and maneuvering in and out of traffic in the bigger cities. It is easy to park and is a dream in a crowded parking lot."
Robert M., MT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Steering and acceleration/power under load is excellent with 6 cyl."
Mark W., AZ (2017 Subaru Outback)"I have the 4 cilinder premium option. The car handles exceptionally well and the acceleration is fine for a it's size engine. Seat comfort is excellent with more leg room than some full size cars. Exceptionally quiet interior. The eyesight system (option) is amazing when I use it on the highway. Excellent warning system when you start to move close to the edge of your lane and great steering assister when you leave your lane."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great handling and acceleration. Especially adheres well in snow and icy conditions. Likes to play in the snow."
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great power for size and class car"
Anonymous, CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handles better than any other car I have driven"
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"handles very well"
William N., GA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very good for driving on gravel and dirt roads. The all-wheel drive keeps the car from sliding."
James B., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"car has a lot of pep"
Anonymous, RI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great acceleration! Ride is smooth, mostly quiet. Lots of ring tones to let u know when a car is near or are crossing a line. Sometimes a bit much but alerts are appreciated"
Chris H., MD (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 4 cyl engine does not have enough power to go up hills without straining. It is a little too weak to accelerate into highway traffic."
Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is great and handles and drives wonderfully. I love driving this vehicle."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Plenty of acceleration Easy handling"
Anonymous, KY (2017 Subaru Outback)"handling is much better the other SUVs."
Robert S., MD (2017 Subaru Outback)"It handles well, quiet a little slow on the acceleration great gas mileage"
James B., MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Love driving this car in bad weather. I also love the adaptive cruise control and the lane change warning."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"It hauls big things good, but it needs more torque and horsepower to accelerate when entering expressways and traffic. It's great in snow and four wheel awd drive is great."
W H., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"They have programmed all of the acceleration out of this transmission. This is for fuel economy. But, when pulling onto I highway it would be good if it would go a bit quicker. Putting the transmission in manual does help."
Mark F., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very good acceleration handles well on poor roads"
Anonymous, QC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very good pick-up and handles well in inclement condiotins."
Don A., MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Technology (monitors, "beeping", etc.) is a pain! Probably the same with other newer vehicles and not a Subaru alone issue."
Anonymous, NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Drives well and is well put together, although the brake and accelerator pedals are badly designed )it is too easy to step on both pedals at the same time)"
Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handles extremely well. Great acceleration for a 4 cylinder"
Anonymous, GA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 6 cylinder motor is far superior to the 4. Freeway ramp acceleration is smooth without having to force the motor into a low gear. Beyond that, we haven't had the car long enough to experience starlink, bluetooth or any of the other amenities."
Anonymous, MN (2017 Subaru Outback)"It's much sportier than we thought it would be (with the bigger 3.6 liter engine). It also has gear levers on the steering wheel. Steering is quick and responsive."
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"I accelerates fine and I like the handling."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The collision avoidance system it OUTSTANDING. Smart cruise is very good, though watching the road is still necessary."
Daniel S., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"For a four cylinder car, very peppy. Handling very responsive."
Steven L., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Beautiful car that is wonderful to drive."
Anonymous, WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very easy steerin, excellent auto drive features"
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"good acceleration. handles well on hilly roads."
Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handling is excellent, being that "just right" combination of nimbleness with decent ride quality, and it's emergency maneuverability is excellent, especially when turning and emergency braking. taking speed bumps, however, must be done straight ahead for if taken at an angle will cause excess harsh rocking from side to side. Acceleration is adequate but the CVT can be annoying at times as it causes non-linear power delivery, resulting occasionally in a bit more acceleration or a bit less accele..."
Lawrence S., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"With the 6 cylinder engine the car is very powerful and handels very well."
A C., MD (2017 Subaru Outback)"Much better handling/acceleration than the V6 Toyota SUV it replaced."
Alex C., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is very non-linear: it reacts quickly for the initial push, but then is somewhat sluggish to continue pushing to 60mph."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"This is an outstanding car in most respects, but it is very underpowered. Its acceleration is the worst of any car I have owned since the 1970s."
Craig F., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"A little underpowered & noisy for passing. Cruises very well on the freeway, pretty good on twisty roads, but a little top heavy. My 2000 Subaru Outback handles better and is more fun on mountain roads."
Anne G., OR (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is good, handling is adequate given the height of the vehicle"
Steve A., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is outstanding, almost too quick. Handling is good."
Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Peppy enough and handles well. (I have only put 84 miles on this vehicle so have little experience with it,.)"
R M., WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"It is fun to drive and feels solid."
Thomas J., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"like handling"
Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Outback)"ground clearance- responsiveness for a four cylinder is very good"
Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is good. Car rollback on hills (even slight ones) is severe and is unsettling. Car has hill holder button which applies parking brake on steep hills, but it does not engage on slighter grades, which can be a problem. There is a delay when shifting from reverse to drive - car does not immediately shift into drive."
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great value for the money"
Gordon H., AB (2017 Subaru Outback)"safety features...crossing the line, too close, etc"
Anonymous, CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"It is way underpowered, and this underpower situation gets worse when the temperature is below 40 degrees. Mileage drops precipitously, and so does the power available."
Mark G., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Needs additional power on a tight freeway merge. Absolutely LOVE the Eyesight adaptive cruise and cross traffic alert."
R H., OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Extremely satisfied"
Ron S., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 3.6R engine is very responsive and the handling is taut with very little body lean."
Michael N., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"CVT works great and ensures optimal power in any situation. Handling is very secure, especially in winter."
Robert T., AB (2017 Subaru Outback)"The CVT makes accelerating a bit sluggish"
Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Adequate acceleration......firm handling."
Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Better acceleration then on my 2010 Outback-Much firmer ride. seats are firmer then 2010 seats"
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is adequate for most situations. Handling is superb and turning radius impressive."
J A., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Slow acceleration, but I chose the 4 cylinder for improved mileage"
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The safety features....eyesight, are the most important reason I bought this car. Along with the AWD and reliability of Subaru."
Kathy L., WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Solid, predictable handling. Strong engine with good acceleration and a great sound."
Alan M., MB (2017 Subaru Outback)"We enjoy the ride, the acceleration and how the car feels solid on the road."
Anonymous, AB (2017 Subaru Outback)"With the 3.6, the acceleration is very good. The car handles very well for a station wagon. Braking is excellent."
Robert S., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is substandard but we expected that since it has a small engine that runs on regular. It has a superb range because of its large tank but like all AWD vehicles its fuel economy is not great. Please see my previous comments for my experience regarding handling."
Terrence V., OR (2017 Subaru Outback)"Dealer said the 4-cylinder would pull my 1200# camper easily. It exceded my expectations and maintains speed on hills and accelerates into traffic just fine. I love the continuously variable transmission."
Frank S., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very quick and precise handling for parking lots or long drives. Acceleration is good for a 4 cylinder engine."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration, handling and braking is somewhat better than a 2013 Outback that I also own, but none of them are any more than barely adequate. Acceleration needs to be considered when pulling onto a highway - the Outback takes a long time to accelerate. Braking is still "squishy"."
Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"very happy with all except lag for transmission to engage when shifting into gear."
Ann M., WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"The back up lights are non-existent and it is dangerous to back up at night. The back up camera shows a grey fuzzy area that is too small to be useful and is not bright enough. Will not show anything on sides. Seats uncomfortable, when backing up onto a ferry or hill the car comes to a screeching halt."
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Vehicle handles and preforms well with the standard 2.5 engine. just a fun vehicle to drive weather on short or long trips."
David D., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"It is a pleasure to drive. Seats are comfortable and the car is responsive to my driving needs."
C S., ID (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very peppy, very nimble. Compared to my previous cars, VERY peppy and nimble. Nice to have for once."
Jim W., NJ (2017 Subaru Outback)"This car has the 3.6 combined with the CVT and the net result is a sense of effortless power, with no undue noise or vibration. Absolute confidence and control. Steering is competent, though not sporty. Handling is the same. While there is some lean, it's never an issue under normal road conditions and speeds."
Daniel K., NE (2017 Subaru Outback)"Both I and others who have driven the car notice and comment on the smoothness of acceleration and the ease of handling. Truly a delightful vehicle."
Anonymous, MO (2017 Subaru Outback)"very good acceleration and mileage. very good road feel and like higher ground clearance without top heavy feel."
Terry K., NM (2017 Subaru Outback)"4 cylinder boxer engine provides all the power I need."
Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"eyesight safety package is wonderful, a great aide to me"
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"We have potential slippery roads due to rain, ice or snow about six months every year. The all wheel drive Subaru system is superb in these types of driving conditions. No other vehicle I've owned even comes close to the handling and traction my Subaru gives me."
Steve R., ND (2017 Subaru Outback)"Zippy enough for the gas mileage it gets"
Anonymous, WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Engaging handling, surprisingly adequate acceleration"
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Enjoy Starlink system and speed control of the system"
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handles well on all surfaces and all weather."
Anonymous, AL (2017 Subaru Outback)"quick response, performs well in all respects"
Anonymous, GA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great! We are very satiisfied with the driving and handling of the Outback."
Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The handling is great, you can turn on a dime"
Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Vehicle feels like a much more refined vehicle than expected. Acceleration is adequate, but slightly more power would further improve what is already a good experience."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Hate the auto braking when on a hill and trying to park"
Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Just adequate."
J O., NH (2017 Subaru Outback)"The handling and slick road capabilities are even better than the other Subaru's we have purchased. The acceleration is certainly adequate for any condition required such as entering freeways."
Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"It handles great in snow and on ice. The first weekend we had it, we had about a 4-in snowfall, and I took the car out and tried to get it to lose traction in a tight curve: it held on tight (very impressive)."
Anonymous, OK (2017 Subaru Outback)"The power is similar to a sports car. At my fastest speed 135 mph (it might go faster) its ride was smooth, yet I still had a amount of good road feel. I have yet to push it hard in curves because I'm only used to doing that in rear wheel drive cars and I'm not sure what the traction control system might do."
Keith G., OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Comfort, ease of handling, good visibility, safety in all weather conditions. It's not going to give you whiplash when you floor it, but it does move respectably on the highway."
Thomas R., OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"We bought the Subaru after the VW Wagon fiasco and are completely happy with it! We often take it to the snow in the winter, and it handles beautifully. Our only regret is not buying it sooner!"
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"We have the 3.6 liter 6 cyl. engine. We drive a lot on two-lane rural roads where passing is often desirable, and the 6 accelerates very well."
Grant M., IN (2017 Subaru Outback)"3.6 gives excellent acceleration and all wheel drive helps in winter."
Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Ample power on our mountain roads and parking is very top notch."
Robert M., MT (2017 Subaru Outback)"It's very responsive to curves in the road. The ride is very smooth."
Ronald W., MO (2017 Subaru Outback)"The Subi could ride easier. It is a little under powered, but it was my decision not to get a turbo."
R H., MD (2017 Subaru Outback)"The trans. is much different that what I'm use to in my explorer and the power is much less that the Ford."
Don P., UT (2017 Subaru Outback)"It is ok but could use a turbo to give it more punch."
Anonymous, IN (2017 Subaru Outback)"It doesn't have the acceleration that the Forester had but I'm satisfied with it. It's a heavier vehicle, after all, with the same engine and transmission as my previous Forester."
Maurice M., SD (2017 Subaru Outback)"Not enough power when merging onto highway or going up steep hill."
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Hate the VCT. It’s not that smooth and hesitates. Disaster on inclines. Otherwise we love the car"
Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handeling, comfort looks"
Ron S., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"I chose the six cylinder model and it has all the power I have ever needed. Passing and merging is effortless. I have also driven the four cylinder and I felt that it was rather anemic."
Michael N., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"The acceleration in the 3.6 engine is excellent, and still gets good gas mileage."
Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration can be hesitant or slow."
Mark W., WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handling is great. Acceleration is choppy at times like it has uneven shifts."
Marvin B., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Secure handling, adequate acceleration. Rack and pinion steering."
David K., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very good acceleration, the handling is probably typical for a SUV"
Anonymous, QC (2017 Subaru Outback)"GOOD HANDLING FOR A RELATIVELY HIGH WAGON WITH ALL-WHEEL DRIVE"
Nicholas D., SC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Good handling, acceleration, braking"
Diana D., ME (2017 Subaru Outback)"acceleration is fair at best"
Anonymous, VT (2017 Subaru Outback)"6 cylinder engine works great, lots of power but with still good mileage. All wheel drive works fantastic is snow, and avoids any chain control"
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent handling in all weather conditions."
Virginia S., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Its quiet inside, very important to us. The Honda we had before we got rid off, lost money because it was so noisy ."
Leo M., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Good acceleration, breaking & gas mileage. Very good handling & cornering in snow."
Leland W., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"The CVT transmission is a bit jerky when at low speeds"
Douglass B., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very good acceleration and handling"
Anonymous, GA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Good mileage and comfortable ride. Eyesight safety features."
Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great handling, acceleration and awesome mileage!"
Anonymous, WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"The multi-functional cruise control was a bit difficult to get used to but I now like it. The car is solid on the road, doesn’t get upset with uneven or broken pavement and has plenty of power to work through interstate traffic. It is outrageously competent."
John F., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Drives well . Decent acceleration not so good on hills"
C H., MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"The handling and move-out ability onto freeways is very good. I did not expect this in the Outback."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"The car responds nicely to city highway traffic situations - enough power to change lanes when and where needed. It has performed well on Interstate and rural State and US routes. So far the best handling car that we have had. The size is just right for my style of driving."
Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Lots more power from a 2.5L than previous similar engines I've owned. Even with above-averages clearance, handling is excellent."
Don W., HI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Despite having a 4 cylinder engine, the acceleration is excellent."
Anonymous, NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"This is one of the smoothest drivetrains that I have experience in over 50 years of driving. It accelerates effortlessly. When cold, there is a bit of roughness that quickly dissipates as it warms up. My wife loves the way it accelerates and handles. When pushed hard the handling degrades, but driven normally it is fine."
Robert C., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Powerful enough for all normal driving situations. Handles well and feels safe."
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"There is an unnerving delay when shifting from reverse to forward (ie when backing out of a driveway onto a busy highway). Otherwise, it handles nicely and comfortably. I would also like to comment on the artificial "shifting" of the CVT transmission, it is a CVT and its advantages should be fully exploited without artificial "shifting.""
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent winter handling and over all good acceleration, given that it is a heavy-ish vehicle and is but a 4 cylinder."
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"The car handles excellentantly and handles even the toughest NY road without a problem. I always feel in control."
Robert M., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"had a 6 with great performance now have the 4 which is lacking in power"
Anonymous, LA (2017 Subaru Outback)"could use a better transmission, very lacking in horsepower, acceleration is slow"
Gerald N., OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Lackluster acceleration"
Anonymous, AL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Fantastic handling and acceleration. A refined all wheel drive in a category of its own."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"does not feel like a four cylinder during acceleration."
Jared B., VA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Safety of this vehicle"
Anonymous, UT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Comfortable on long drives."
Anonymous, ID (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is adequate under most circumstances, and the handling is secure. Gas mileage is well below the EPA estimates. My highway driving is 70-80 % of my driving, yet I barely get more (I average 26 mpg) than the city driving estimate (25 mpg). Combined estimate is 28 mpg. I got this once, but it was all highway driving."
Jeffrey R., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handling is excellent, acceleration mediocre."
Jay H., NM (2017 Subaru Outback)"no hesitation on acceleration."
Anonymous, SC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handling in corners is stable and smooth. There is minimum to no oversteer or understeer. The cruise control accelerates the vehicle in a fuel conserving manner. Visibility is very good. Does not free wheel coast when you take your foot off the accelerator."
Anonymous, IN (2017 Subaru Outback)"Our Subaru has EXCELLENT acceleration and handling. I tend to like to be the first from a signal...our Subaru responds perfectly. (I always look both ways before 'punching' it!) It's SO easy to make a "U" turn in our Subaru, I never cease to be amazed by that."
Rosalyn W., NM (2017 Subaru Outback)"The EyeSight system is well worth the money and works great."
Jason P., LA (2017 Subaru Outback)"good corning, poor accelerating from stop. poor engine braking."
Charles L., NJ (2017 Subaru Outback)"I like the safety features: Eyesight, blind spot warning, automatic braking - front and rear, automatic headlight control."
Don B., CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent acceleration and handling."
Bob M., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Drives smoothly, quietly; accelerates appropriately."
Griselda S., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"3.6 six cylinder engine is very smooth and quiet even under hard acceleration. Acceleration is better than most crossovers around its price ( $40,000)and the CVT is responsive with no motor-boating effect. Hard acceleration causes transmission to simulate a conventional automatic with perceptible shift points. Negative is odd delay in engaging when shifted between drive and reverse. Car has paddle shifters but I don’t use them"
Peter G., AL (2017 Subaru Outback)"All is good except the 4 cyl is a little underpowered and a little noisy."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Some hesitation when shifting from D to R and back again."
Anonymous, NE (2017 Subaru Outback)"6 cyl has above average acceleration Handling is excellent."
Anonymous, CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"the is a slight pause when you first step on the gas, then the machine accelerates very rapidly handling is very responsive"
Linda C., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent on snow and ice"
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"The transmission programming is terrible. I truly hate the fake gear shifts. A CVT can be so smooth (like the 2012 Toyota Prius), but instead you're left dreading going above 20% throttle and getting randomly placed, terribly jerky gear shifts. This alone would make me reconsider buying any Subaru. I don't care that it is slow (the Prius has less power), but the jerky transmission is unbearable."
Ashley S., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"acceleration is pretty anemic, but handling is OK. Acceleration is adequate."
Anonymous, AZ (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent acceleration when required. Handling is superb and I get great gas mileage."
David W., BC (2017 Subaru Outback)"driving"
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"excellent handling and acceleration. collision prevention and other safety features are great."
Dennis C., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 3.6L engine flat moves! Car's handling is superb, too!"
Gary A., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"CVT is very rough. At slow speeds it changes ratios and can't seem to make up its mind"
Anonymous, VT (2017 Subaru Outback)"I feel that it's the best driving car I've ever owned. It's good all year, in all weather conditions."
Ronald D., MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Sometimes accelerates in first gear to very high RPM before shifting."
Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"For the first 6 months after I bought the car (Feb 2017), the acceleration seemed very sluggish, and I remember complaining about that in last year's survey. But the acceleration improved markedly after that, and now I find it to be quite adequate."
Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"good handling, but 4cyl engine somewhat slugglish on rapid acceleration"
Frederick S., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Recently driving in a bad thunderstorm the car handled very well and I felt very safe and totally in control"
Mark L., NJ (2017 Subaru Outback)"great pickup and steering. Handles snow perfectly. Love the eyesight features, but hate that every indicator sound is the same"
Sean F., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"handles quite well, acceleration is adequate"
John L., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Can feel a little slow, but the CVT is just a little slow to respond sometimes; it can go plenty fast when pushed. Overall, a pleasant experience."
Matthew N., MO (2017 Subaru Outback)"I am particularly impressed by the dynamic cruise control and eye sight safety features."
James M., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handles very well. Visibility is very good. Eyesight system is very good. Wish I had bought the 6 cylinder."
Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Transmission is sluggish. Can’t rely on it to move quickly and without hesitation."
Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Both acceleration and especially handling very good."
Nathan Z., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent pickup from stop; excellent power on inclines. Cruise control holds car when on steep incline and descent."
Anonymous, IA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The design of the braking systems is bad: (1) occasionally I inadvertently hit BOTH the accelerator and the brake while attempting to brake, resulting in a power surge and lengthened stopping time and distance. This needs a recall as Subaru refuses to fix it. (2) There is NO emergency brake."
George W., CT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Stable and predictable, easy to drive smoothly."
John W., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great for towing"
David W., MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Pretty good acceleration for a CVT transmission and 4 cylinder engine. Nice handling, especially on snow and slick conditions."
Gordon D., CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"It is a sports car in disguise. We've owned Porsches, and this vehicle handles as good as my Porsche. Excellent handling, cornering, smooth acceleration. It feels safe while at the same time performing great. It's the best vehicle we've ever owned."
Margaret Eden E., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Rock steady on the road, great for passing, gets thru blizzards etc..."
Nancy H., MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great acceleration"
David G., NM (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is average, adequate. Handling is excellent"
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"It's not a sporty vehicle in any sense of the word but suits my needs perfectly."
Tim G., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very smooth ride. While driving, acceleration is excellent, less so when accelerating from a stop."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Drives and sounds like an old farm truck, noisy, fair acceleration"
Anonymous, WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Adaptive cruise control is outstanding. In LA traffic will hold a 3 second distance to a complete stop and then begin moving again with a touch of a button."
Gary N., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent handing and satisfactory acceleration."
Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Good acceleraton with 3.6 L engine. Corners well. Firm ride."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"It accelerates quickly and handles beautifully."
Linda J., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great handling on all surfaces due to the all wheel drive. Excellent handing in the rain."
Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"With the 4 cylinder engine, I think it's a bit under powered. But the cost and the fuel economy loss makes the 6 cylinder engine unattractive."
Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Best handling vehicle I have ever had for snow, ice, and hardpack. It cannot be beat in Minnesota winters."
Richard M., MN (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent handling and ride comfort, mostly good acceleration, but too noisy and a feeling of underpowered upon hard acceleration"
Anne G., OR (2017 Subaru Outback)"The CVT transmission delivers plenty of power to pull a popup camper with two kayaks on top. It maintains speed going up steep hills in the Adirondacks."
Frank S., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Car is equipped with 3.6 engine which delivers plenty of power. We had a 4 cyl engine in a previous Outback which was rather under powered. This vehicle has all wheel drive which is extremely good on slick roads."
Jerry M., IN (2017 Subaru Outback)"slow pick up but drives great"
Michael K., LA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The vehicle has a six cylinder "boxer" engine that normally operates at a low rpm. Therefore, engine runs very quiet but it has plenty of reserve power for rapid acceleration when needed. Handles easily with relatively short turning radius."
Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The six cylinder and CVT are surprisingly quick, and the 4-wheel drive gives me confidence"
Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Outback)"the 4 cylinder has good acceleration w/ the CVT. I use the manual shifting when I need immediate power. it's fine"
W B., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"very smooth and peppy"
Charles C., NJ (2017 Subaru Outback)"The car seems to jump off the line..I must gently touch the pedal."
Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Easy to drive. Plenty of acceleration without being agresive. Smooth and quiet ride. Predictable during wet and icy weather conditions. Precise in cornering and stopping."
Peter C., MO (2017 Subaru Outback)"Adequate acceleration. Excellent handling in bad weather."
Martin M., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"While the 2017 Outback 2.5 could have better acceleration, it is more than adequate 95% of the time. The handling of the current generation (2015-2019) is substantially improved over the prior generation (2011) Outback we used to own. It feels very "planted" at all times, and the ride is not compromised by the very good handling."
John M., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"very good acceleration at any time, especially given the size of the car"
Richard B., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handling and road feel is very precise and solid"
Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Outback)"It accelerates well enough to get into traffic. When I wish to go fast, I use my Porsche. Its handling is fine for what it is."
Anonymous, WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Coming from a '01 CR-V, I love the power while still getting great mileage. With the all-season tires on it, I floored the gas and hit the brakes on snow and was happy with the traction control. Then I put Hakkapeliitta tires on. Enough said."
Anonymous, AK (2017 Subaru Outback)"I love the way the Outback holds the road. It's fun to drive yet seems more sure-footed, thus safer."
John H., VA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Strong acceleration with the 6 cylinder motor. Handling is good and suspension sufficiently firm for a good road feel."

Automatic distance control while using cruise control. Gas Gauge is NOT accurate 1/2 tank is actually, 1/4 full and according to staff no fix so I use odometer not good."
William G., MD (2017 Subaru Outback)"The acceleration from stop could use a boast, but once it is running it is very good. It handles very well in all circumstances. I like the firm suspension because we have a number of dips to go over in our city and it never bottoms out."
Anonymous, WY (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 3.6l has a lot of get-up & go. Handled great in Indiana snow last winter."
Anonymous, AL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very solid in mountain driving and in inclement weather. Nothing comes close."
J H., KS (2017 Subaru Outback)"This vehicle drives like a dream , it's response in steering is immediate and the acceleration is better than I ever thought it would be"
Michael R., MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The active cruise control feature"
David C., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is a bit sluggish as expected for the size of the engine. Transmission is extremely smooth and there is plenty of power for going up steep hills. Cruise control is outstanding, even at very low speeds, and crash avoidance is great."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"My Subaru has excellent acceleration for a 2.5L normally aspirated engine and the handling is quick and lively."
William S., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"I have the 6 cylinder, Used to have 4 cylinder. Big difference in acceleration with 6 cylinder."
Anonymous, MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration could use a boost. I most notice this when I want to pass a car on a two-lane highway. I feel insecure about the Outback's acceleration capability."

James B., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration and handling is very satisfied. Very smooth, non-obstractive acceleration (and quick) and secure, stablr handling. Very good for normal, everyday using"
Damian D., ON (2017 Subaru Outback)"Excellent acceleration and handling, first CVT transmission I like."
Brian H., BC (2017 Subaru Outback)"The safety features are the most impressive. The adaptive cruise control is wonderful. The other safety features are great also. That was one of the primary buying decisions."
Nancy M., WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"I love the response this vehicle has to my driving. It is very maneuverable and it accelerates well."
Melanie F., FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is sluggish. the 4 cylinder engine has difficulty with hill climbing."

Harold P., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"The comfort of the car. What I didn’t like was loosing my contacts repeatedly"
Anonymous, WI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handles great, but I do not like the engine choices Subaru currently offers. Their turbo four cylinder engines are phenomenal, and should be offered as a replacement for the archaic and inefficient 3.6 engine. I am assuming that since they added the 2.4 turbo to the new Ascent, it should make its way to the Outback in the future, as a replacement for the 3.6. I would likely consider an Ascent over the Outback next time around, if the current engine choices remain."
David O., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Safety, comfort and value for the price I paid."
Anonymous, AZ (2017 Subaru Outback)"I love how it handles, especially in the snow. It “moves‿ so well in ice and snow that I’m often surprised that it only stops as well as any other car."
Troy T., UT (2017 Subaru Outback)"The handling is fantastic, you can turn on a dime !!"
Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback)"It’s Underpowered. I thought Subaru would improve the power significantly over previous model years since this has been a consistent complaint."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is somewhat lacking in emergency situations."
Colleen C., NV (2017 Subaru Outback)"4 cyl acceleration better than I was expecting. handles nice but the front windshield rearview mirror is so low on the windshield that there is a large blind spot out the right side of front windshield. it is so bad that I am seriously thinking of getting rid of this car before an accident happens. I have had a couple of close calls already. I have the emergency braking package on this Subaru which might be the reason the mirror takes up so much space on the windshield. not sure but to compensate for this problem I have lowered the driver seat as low as it will go which makes driving uncomfortable but I can see out to the right a little easier. if I would have noticed this during test drive I would not have purchased this vehicle, it would have been a deal breaker."
Robert S., OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"The car is wonderful and we have had no serious problems. My big issue that even though the four cylinder is more powerful than my old 2006 outback, I would still opt for the six cylinder next time."
John F., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Handles great and makes tight turns but doesn’t accelerate quickly enough compared to similar sized non AWD vehicles."
Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great driving and handling. Excellent in snow."
Linda M., VT (2017 Subaru Outback)"Very tight turning radius. Accelerates nicely."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"A little slow on the acceleration, but has good power on a hill. Handles GREAT in the snow!"
Monty M., UT (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 3.6R engine is sufficiently powerful, but held back by the CVT transmission, which by itself is very good compared to the competitors, but it is optimized for fuel efficiency. One has to floor it to get full power, but then acceleration is very satisfying. Handling is no short of excellent, very planted and trust inspiring, especially under winter driving conditions."
Robert T., AB (2017 Subaru Outback)"I love the adaptive cruse control and the back up camera"
Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Smooth and easy to drive. I love the safety features, like blind spot detection, too."
Kristal M., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"This isn't a sport vehicle but handles extremely well, it literally corners like a much more sporty car. With the 3.6 engine the acceleration is good, not great, but again, not really a sports car. To me the 2.4 wasn't acceptable and the difference in mileage between the 3.6 & the 2.4 is minor."
Robert S., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The handling is good for an SUV. The acceleration of the 3.6 engine is quite good."
Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Outback)"The car rides, handles, and accelerates nicely."

Simply put, it costs about 20% fuel mileage overall penalty vs. the four cylinder but with 50% more power. Actually on the highway mileage its only about 10% less mileage. Worth the cost. Both burn regular gas."
John-Judy E., OK (2017 Subaru Outback)"I really like the Eyesight system with the adaptive cruise control. It has corrected bad driving habits I wasn't even aware of."
Bruce H., MI (2017 Subaru Outback)"Love the AWD. Always feel in command."
Anonymous, OR (2017 Subaru Outback)"Satisfactory acceleration, excellent handling"
James D., IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration with the 3.6 litre engine is excellent. I don't love the CVT transmission, but it's better than most CVTs I've driven. Handling is excellent - almost sporty. The all wheel drive is outstanding. Seamless and unobtrusive. Unbelievably surefooted. I have never felt any wheel break traction on any surface - wet or dry."
William H., TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"My Subaru drives efficiently and comfortably. I am very pleased with the mileage and handling."
Cindy D., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"As most anyone should be aware - it is relatively slow and I would prefer less gas mileage with a standard transmission as opposed to the CVT. The CVT is one of the best I've driven but still just isn't what I want and if any competitor ever designed something similar in size with a regular transmission with decent reliability I would likely switch."

Tim M., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"I debated between the V4 or the V6. I got the V6 and am very glad I did. The car drives very well, accelerates easily and steers with precision."
Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The acceleration is great since I got the 3.6-liter engine. It's not as snappy as the 2.5L turbo 4 I had in my 2005 Forester, but it's so smooth and it feels like there's limitless power going up hills. I haven't yet taken it on the highway but I have no doubt it would be fun if I didn't hate driving on the highway and avoid it. Everyone says the Subaru CVT is one of the best but I'll tell you what, I don't like it so far. I feel like a modern 6+ speed automatic would have been a much better fit. I don't know if it's the lousy factory tires or what, but whenever I pull away from a stoplight, I get two jerks. I did notice this was much less noticeable with the Blizzak snow tires I had on, so maybe it's tire slippage and not transmission weirdness. I find that if I gun it, the rubber band jerk feeling is much less. If I'm gentle, I get two surges every time. The handling is very sedate and controlled. I don't quite like the electric power steering - I feel like I'm turning the wheel on the Titanic sometimes."
Adam H., MA (2017 Subaru Outback)"My car has Eyesight, which alerts me if I am stopped and the car in front of me moves; the car alerts me if there is any cross traffic or movement behind the car when I back up; the car will apply brakes if it thinks I am not stopping fast enough; the cruise control adjusts speed to the car in front of me"
Anonymous, VA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 6 cylinder is very responsive and accelerates beautifully when you need that "extra punch". I would not go back to the 4 cylinder engine. The 6 cylinder engine is also very economical."
Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Outback)"with the 3.6 liter engine, acceleration is very good, even at higher elevations - we live at 6800 feet. handling is easy and calm - reassuring."
Richard O., CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"The 4 cylinder is adequate for most situations. Fuel mileage has been less than expected."
Anonymous, AL (2017 Subaru Outback)"Great acceleration. Comfortable to drive and the adaptive cruise control works surprisingly well. Handling is ok, good for a AWD vehicle with high clearance."
Jeffrey K., WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"The touring model is very nice inside and out. All options are in m odel. Very nice having all bells and whistles"
Timothy C., NY (2017 Subaru Outback)"handles better than previous Rav4 and as well as previous Mazda cx5"
Anonymous, CO (2017 Subaru Outback)"Amazing with snow and ice."
Anonymous, QC (2017 Subaru Outback)"Subaru broke it. My 2011 Outback had a far smoother and luxurious acceleration feel that my 2017 model because the CVT transmission was allowed to operate on its natural smooth power curve. The marketing folks convinced the engineers to program "shift-shock" into the logic so that it now feels jerky when accelerating. The shift-shock is WORSE than most any other car maker without a CVT transmission. They broke it."
John K., MD (2017 Subaru Outback)"Nice smooth handling and acceleration."
Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback)"Good safety record. Mushy handling"
Stephen N., WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"I have a four-cylinder, not a six, which chews up gas. I have found that power and drivability are sufficient and mileage is usually 29 or 30 MPG."
Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Outback)"the flat four engine can be noisy at start up. when loaded it is very noisy at acceleration. the six would probably be better. this is my first Subaru and I wonder about the reliability when mileage gets higher. on appositive note I feel very safe driving this car and the safety system makes it fun to drive."
Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Outback)"The eyesight is fantastic, the car is cPable of entering g freeways and passing others with ease."
Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"Solid ride. you can "feel" the road."
Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"We have the four cylinder model. Acceleration is brisk, and the handling imparts confidence, particularly on wet roads, and at highway speeds on narrow, fast, twisty four lane highways in heavy traffic (example: CA 17 from Santa Cruz, CA to San Jose.) Braking is excellent, and Subaru EyeSight monitoring and pre-collision braking features have have helped avoid accidents on a couple of occasions. Suspension control over rough surfaces is very good, and I feel the car is stable and "planted", with no tendency to hop or skitter on rough or bumpy surfaces, either straight or in turns. Body roll is minimal. As a side note, I must say that the headlights provide a lot of illumination, but the cutoff on low beams does not provide enough illumination far enough ahead when driving on rolling two-lane roads."
Chris A., CA (2017 Subaru Outback)"It’s acceleration is smooth and adequate for 2.5 liter engine. It’s handling is superior to the Lexus RX350 previously owned. However its a bit unstable and less nimble than the 1999 Subaru Outback I bought new in 1999 and drove over 350,000 miles for 15 years."

Leonard Z., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"A great long trip vehicle for all conditions. Such as weather and terrain."
Anonymous, NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"The standard 4 cyl engine has good acceleration on the highway and in town. I’m a little disappointed in the gas mileage. I commute more than 3 hours to work once a week and I barely average 27 miles per gallon. I’m also frustrated with the transmission in that there is a delay between shifting in between drive and reverse. It’s a several second delay that is disruptive. If you push the gas before the transmisson fully engages, the vehicle will rev its engine and lurch so you have to play the delay in transmission engagement."
Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback)"I find the downshifting rather annoying when going up a slight incline."

Michael R., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Acceleration is marginal, esp. while merging from low-speed on-ramp onto freeway (70-80 mph) express lane. Also, there is a delay in response time of shift changes, e.g., to D or R from P or N. Paddles work great on downhill speed reduction"

Anonymous, NH (2017 Subaru Outback)"The reverse gear is not appropriate for reversing out of steeper grades it should not have problems handling. I got stuck in the mountains in Colorado and needed towed out because the transmission would not put enough power to the wheels to move them at all."
Jason S., NE (2017 Subaru Outback)"The handling on icy roads is very poor with the tires that come standard on the car. Service personnel recommended a tire change so the car will hold the road better. I think Subaru should quit putting substandard tires on the car when you buy it. My husband wound up sliding into a tree in our driveway at very slow speed, about 8 mph. He couldn't steer or stop the car."

Joseph S., PA (2017 Subaru Outback)"Even though this car is a 4 cylinder, or handles better than my previous model's 6 cylinders. It has great pick up and wonderful handling, especially on icy or snow packed roads."
Anonymous, ND (2017 Subaru Outback)"I have the Isight suite of safety features and I find them to be most helpful especially on highway driving. Adaptive Cruise Control is a great feature and I use Lane Assist regularly. I value blind spot detection but would like some type of audio warning signal in a addition to the yellow indicator not he the side mirror. A sound similar to Lane Assist might be helpful and activated when I try to change lanes and a car is there. Acceleration and merging into traffic has been fine. I truly love driving the car."
Tom C., NC (2017 Subaru Outback)"It handles really well. I really like the quick starting and how easily it corners for such a big vehicle. First time I've owned a wagon, and I was afraid it would not handle as well as my previous car, which was a sedan. I was happy with the result."
Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Outback)"With the exception of the WRX/STI models Subarus are terribly under powered. The Outback is supposed to go 0-60 in 9.5 seconds. I don't believe it is capable of that. Merging on the freeway is difficult."
