Buying a reliable SUV is an effective way to reduce your long-term ownership costs. Unreliable vehicles depreciate quickly and often require expensive out-of-warranty repairs. According to our Annual Auto Surveys, which have data on over 380,000 vehicles, when Consumer Reports members are shopping for a compact, midsized, or three-row SUV, reliability remains one of the most important factors. It makes sense. Buying an SUV that’s rated highly for reliability minimizes repair costs, maximizes resale value, and ensures long-term peace of mind.

Consumer Reports’ car experts rate the most reliable SUVs using the results of our latest member surveys. In those surveys, owners share detailed vehicle history, including problems and repairs. We analyze this data and weigh problems according to their severity to reveal which models are most likely to be dependable. With these ratings, you can find an SUV that’s likely to be reliable.

The mainstream and luxury compact, midsized, and three-row SUVs listed here all performed well in our road tests. But a vehicle’s road-test score isn’t a guarantee for a recommendation. There are plenty of SUVs, cars, trucks, and minivans in Consumer Reports’ ratings that have very high road-test scores but still aren’t recommended.

That’s because each vehicle needs a high Overall Score to be recommended. It encompasses the latest results from the reliability and owner satisfaction sections of Consumer Reports’ exclusive Annual Auto Surveys, the availability of automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, AEB that works at highway speeds, blind spot warning (BSW), rear cross traffic warning (RCTW), the results from insurance industry crash tests, if they’re available, and a vehicle’s performance in our road tests.

The SUVs below are listed in order of their reliability score, and range from compact to three-row models. Unless otherwise noted, each comes standard with AEB, BSW, and RCTW.
