The Prius V wagon might look similar to the familiar Prius hatchback, but it's stretched in all dimensions to provide notably more cargo space and a roomier rear seat. Despite the larger size, Prius V's efficient gas-electric hybrid powertrain still gets an excellent 41 mpg overall, this is only three mpg less than the hatchback.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Despite the larger size, Prius V's efficient gas-electric hybrid powertrain still gets an excellent 41 mpg overall, this is only three mpg less than the hatchback. Anonymous, NY (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Premature brake wear

"Needed complete replacement of front and rear pads and rotors in about half the time I have experienced in other cars for a total cost of almost $1,000 Canadian. This is despite the Prius having regenerative braking that should reduce the use of the mechanical brakes. My personal judgement after this repair is that the cause is because the regeneration on the Prius is so weak as to be virtually useless and that it is also actuated by the brake pedal, not by the release of the accelerator pedal"

Anonymous, QC (2014 Toyota Prius V Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Squeaking

"The noise is more of a "groan" than a squeak. It even can be heard when the car is at rest but is most noticeable when the brakes are applied or released. Braking does not seem to be affected. Took it to our servicing dealer and they could not find any cause for the noise. They said it "could" be the brake actuator and if it were it would cost us $5000 for the part. That seemed very excessive for a repair to a relatively new vehicle. Called Toyota HQ and they had no advice for fixing the problem"

Greg S., CA (2014 Toyota Prius V Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Master cylinder

"On a trip, a variety of dashboard warning lights came on. I took it to the Toyota Dealer in Raleigh NC where I was visiting. They diagnosed the problem, gave me a rental car, ordered the parts, fixed my car in 4 days at no charge as a warrenty repa"

F W., VA (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

"same leak as described earlier with the oil leak"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Toyota Prius V Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Oil leaks

"dealer said because of design flaw, oil and fuel leak down onto what was the carburetor area and must be cleaned every so often--usually about 20-30000 mile at a cost of about $150"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Toyota Prius V Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

"the driver's side interior door caved in and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Sunroof

"We were looking forward to a roof sunroof that opened - a major 'comfort' feature of the Toyota Subaru that we quite liked. The Prius V does not have this, and the dealer would not address whether we could have this feature put in. Disappointing"

Jo-Ann B., ON (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Blower (fan) motor

"Excessive noise and some vibration"

Robert C., FL (2014 Toyota Prius V Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Condenser

"The Prius V is still under warranty and experienced damage to the condenser which Toyota would not pay for. The dealer wanted $1,200!!!! They think a stone flew up and damaged the condenser. I've read that many others experienced the same problem, which to me shows that the design is poor"

Tom-Mary R., WI (2014 Toyota Prius V Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Fuel gauge/sender

E V., WI (2014 Toyota Prius V Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"Entune is very disappointing. There was no help at all in learning about it, the manual is terrible, we keep getting emails and mailings from Toyota that assume a level of knowledge we never achieved"

M G., NC (2014 Toyota Prius V Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
