Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

I searched the internet and have discovered approximately 25 vehicles, exactly the same 2009 Limited edition, Blizzard Pearl color that are having the same problem with the paint peeling in the same area on each vehicle. “The alternator output voltage on these vehicles is fixed at 13.7 - 13.9 volts, which is not high enough for modern sealed/maintenance free batteries. As a result, the battery only lasts 1 or 2 years”

Brandon M., AB (2009 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

Electronic ignition

“It has started to mysteriously not start. It will turn over but it won't start. It doesn't do it all the time just once in a while. We're afraid to drive it any distance from home. The mechanic can't figure out whats wrong with it”

Allen M., PA (2009 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Locks and latches

“Locking from interior switch somehow dysfunctioned the hatch lock so that after the hatch was opened, it would not allow latching the hatch door to close; the rotating pin in the door latch was stuck closed. Service tech levered the pin open while holding up the hatch handle...problem solved but worry about locking from interior now! switches now!”
