Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. What Owners Say

Alignment

"The rear alignment adjustment repeatedly goes out, causing camber with severe tire wear. Toyota has implemented a recall on the alignment adjustment linkage. The recall fix is faulty and is causing the repeated alignment issues and the costs are being passed on to me"

Tie rods

"Recall work on rear end made it impossible to align rear end. Independent shop was not aware of issue and tried to force alignment in rear damaging rear end. Dealer fixed for a substantial price."

William B., CT (2010 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear tie rod cracked on freeway. Do not recall hitting anything to cause failure."

Mark S., CA (2010 Toyota RAV4 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"A recall on the rear alignment rods freezes the toe-in adjustment (epoxy). A year later they had to redo the recall. A little more than a year later, my Rav4 needs a toe-in adjustment again and they are happy to charge me $600 to $700 to redo the recall. Charging me for an expensive recall whenever I need an alignment is unethical. They should have installed a fully functional recall or pay for the recall whenever it is needed. Toyota corporate refuses to pay for it. That should be illegal."

Don M., MA (2010 Toyota RAV4 Base 3.5-L V6)
Tire wear is uneven

V H., TX (2010 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Warped wheel bearing caused wobbling noise, then front brake rotor warping. Was around $1400 to fix the wheel bearings (this doesn't include the cost of needing to replace the breaks early)"

Anonymous, WA (2010 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

Paul B., CA (2010 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Neither the dealer nor our local garage could find the problem of noise from one of the front wheels. They thought it was the tires. My son, a mechanic, replaced the right wheel bearing and it solved the problem."

Anonymous, QC (2010 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"At some time between 2:00 PM and 2:30 PM on November 5, 2016 my wife and I were driving my 2010 Rav4 South on County Route 561 in Voorhees Township, NJ on the inside lane of this 4 lane highway when I lightly pressed the brake pedal to slow from 45 MPH to the lowered speed limit. Suddenly, and without warning, the left rear wheel locked up tight, causing the vehicle to swerve abruptly into and across two lanes of oncoming traffic. I was able to regain some control by releasing the brake and steering to the right to avoid going over the curb, but the rear end of the car slid to the left and hit the curb smartly, followed by a similar action by the light trailer we were towing. Pieces of brake disc and a caliper pad retaining pin populated the roadway and the left tire of the trailer was ripped open by the curb. Luckily traffic was light and alert oncoming drivers had time to slow down. No one was injured but if this had happened during rush hour, serious injuries or fatalities might have occurred."

Dealership said I would have to live with the problem or have and new brakes installed. If I had all brakes reinstalled the final cost will be over a $1,300 for brakes to go only for 13,000 miles. Toyota needs to look at the materials used in manufacturing there brakes. They now have a problem with rust build up on brakes on all models."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The aluminum reflective heat shield over the muffler corroded through at its attachment points because it was attached with plain steel bolts and nuts leading to dis-similar metal corrosion. According to my tech, a known problem. This happened at about 93,000 miles. When I checked the rattling, the muffler also was showing corrosion and a cracking. I had both done at the same time."
