This version of the Tacoma shed some of its workaday roots with powertrain, steering system, and interior trim improvements. Fuel economy is quite competitive among pickup trucks, and handling is secure. However, the ride is not altogether comfortable and the driving position is not ideal. Payload capacity is relatively small. A rear-view camera is optional.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Poor acceleration and resulting erratic operation of cruise control on hills"

Anonymous, AK (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"I purchased a 4-cylinder engine for mostly in town commuting. The last year my job changed and I drive on longer trips. The 4-cylinder engine is under powered for that."

CHARLES C., IA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"First project was a trailer tow to North Carolina with a net load weight of 4000 pounds and gross total of 5050 pounds. Truck pulled this with AC and head wind @ 60 mph and returned 23mpg, empty return of 25 mpg @ posted allowed speed. 6343 miles total trip distance."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Low acceleration, no power"

Anonymous, MA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Blind spots on side and side mirror placement when turning especially in the dark."

DAVID N., VA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"4 cyl gas mileage is poor and the truck is underpowered. Wish I had bought the V6, which would probably get the same or better overall gas mileage. Overall will not consider another Tacoma unless rear disk brakes are offered. Incredible that they were left out yet again in the most recent truck redesign"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Starting uphill in Summer takes same time."

Anonymous, MO (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Compared to modern (last 10 years) drive systems, the Tacoma seems antiquated. The automatic transmission is slow to respond, the engine keeps running when the vehicle is stopped (granted it is not a hybrid, but it should be), the cruise control is the worst I've experienced in my 45 years of driving."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Weak acceleration"

DALE N., NC (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"4 cylinder extra cab - doesn't accelerate well. Could be fixed by changing the final drive ratio..."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"No guts. Slow to accelerate and respond, but I accept that in this model. It does what I want it to."

Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Good acceleration. Ride is a little rough and a little jittery on rough roads. But it is a 4x4, it is supposed to be a little rough riding. I love my Taco!"

BILL S., TX (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Not as comfortable as a full size pick up. Still more reliable than any other."

Anonymous, PR (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"I have the 4 cyl engine. Power is terrible !!!!!!!"

MAHLON W., AL (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Powerful for a 6"

JAMES J., GA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"The 4 cylinder is underpowered. Constant downshifting and engine roar."

STEPHEN L., MA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Poor turning radius. I installed anti-sway bars to improve handling. Driver's seat not comfortable."

Anonymous, OR (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Acceleration poor. Handling in snow bad if not using 4 wheel drive. Fairly good with 4 wheel drive"

DOROTHY O., MA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"The Tacoma is under powered with the 4 cylinder engine. Should have purchased the model with the V-6 engine."

Anonymous, HI (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very capable vehicle, especially in winter driving conditions. This is very important considering we can experience winter conditions 9 months of the year. Ride comfortable, great sightlines, feel very confident and safe driving this truck"

JOHN M., AB (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"With the extended cab the ride tends to be noisy. Also, the ride is rough - it's a truck!"

Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"I bought the extra can and immediately wished I had bought the full 4 door with more room in the back. My bad as the truck is fine"

Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Door height needs to be higher to allow easier entry."

Anonymous, AL (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Did not acquire this vehicle for comfort although comfortable enough. Ride, handling, and visibility were the key items and some carrying capacity without the large P-U and engine."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"both are great vehicles,no complaints on either of them"

Anonymous, NM (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Uncomfortable to sit/ride in, small bed."

Anonymous, CT (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"A very noisy ride; we enjoy listening to the radio or CD's but loudness of the truck on a highway makes it so we have to amp up the volume SO much. Otherwise, the ride is fine."

Anonymous, WI (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Noisy noisy wind"

ROBERT P., CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Not enough space in the cab for this large adult, especially with winter coat/boots on."

ART S., AB (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

Anonymous, MA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Ride suffers from 4x4 features, but I am willing to pay the price of some discomfort for off-road ability."

Anonymous, WY (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seats are comfortable for longer drives, but noise level at highway speeds is higher than I prefer."

RANDY F., CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very utilitarian, it is, after all a pick up truck. But as trucks go, the ride, seats and noise abatement are above average."

W C., NC (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Bad interior. Very basic, and cloth seats are difficult to clean."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seat position is strange . Even with steering wheel in highest position there is very little room between it and drivers legs. And this applies to average size adults."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Hard to enter. I hit my head too often getting in. Seats could have a vertical adjustment."

BARRY N., PA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very hard to enter because of the low roofline."

STEPHEN L., MA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"easy to work on yourself, reliability, comfort, simple"

JON P., FL (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"I like everything about this truck except the ride quality, which is very jumpy and harsh. I had an earlier, 1994 Toyota truck which had a much smoother ride."

LARY H., OR (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"wind noise over the roof and rattles in the drivers access door."

Anonymous, IN (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"I like everything except that the headrests are too far forward and cause pain in the neck and shoulders on long drives"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Solid truck at a good price and it has held its value."

TERRY H., MA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Checked other vehicles of the category/payload and settled on this vehicle. Because of the extra equipment that came as standard and other options."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Holding its value in an exceptional manner. Very reliable vehicle."

LISA B., OH (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"We wanted a standard cab pickup with manual transmission for hauling things, but not too large. This truck fit the bill for less than blue book. The straightforward interior is comfortable and easy to keep clean. After a year we are still delighted with our Tacoma, Which for $10k less than new didn't have any of the frills we didn't need or want. Even the stock stereo has auxiliary input for our iPods."

JESSICA M., WA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"1. Dealer refused to honour rebate that expired because the Tacoma shipment was delayed due to the nuclear reactor incident in Japan. I lost $4000 in rebates. 2. Paid more for a toyota due to perceived reliability, resale value. I can now buy a full size truck with similar mileage and more room for not too much more."

Anonymous, MB (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"The tires that come with the vehicle are crap and last 12,000 miles. They are backed for 1 year only. The dealership will do nothing but try to sell you a new set after only 14K of driving."

MICHAEL R., HI (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Premium price without premium options as standard, i.e. climate control, blue tooth, garage door opener, leather seats etc."

BILL C., MA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Five plus years old, no major problems, and cost under $20K."

TIMOTHY A., VA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"If you don't have to trailer anything - like a boat - this truck meets the needs of a city driver with utter practicality."

GABRIELLE M., FL (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"relaibitly and simple."

JON P., FL (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"./it was cheep to buy and it does what I want"

PAMELA O., OH (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Quality vehicle"

STEVEN L., NC (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Just like the style of the vehicle."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Best looking small truck on the market. I have the TRD Sport."

BILL S., TX (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Non-functional air scoop on the hood reflects blinding sun into driver's eyes eastbound(mornings) and westbound(late afternoons). Dangerous and Stupid dominance of style over sense."

ART S., AB (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"Stock wheels and gearing are too small and too low!"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Tacoma)

"nice styling good reliable truck"

Anonymous, NM (2011 Toyota Tacoma)
