While full-sized pickup trucks increasingly adopt luxury trappings, compact trucks remain utilitarian workhorses. The Tacoma is a down-and-dirty example of function trumping form. The Tacoma is the perfect truck for landscapers and contractors. This beast of burden has a tough-as-nails chassis and a durable composite plastic bed. For off-roading adventures, the capable Tacoma has few peers.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? What Owners Say

"When I press the pedal, it jumps! handles very smoothly around corners and bumps."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I like the selective transmission and the ECT when needed especially towing a load."

Bob T., LA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Acceleration feels laboured compared to my 2010 Tacoma. This can be improved by activating the power button, although this adversely affects fuel economy."

S B., ON (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The power and hadling are fantastic."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Acceleration do not respond as well as similar vehicles in the market. but the handling is good."

Carlos M., PR (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Handling and acceleration is great!!!!!!!!!!"

Malcolm D., SC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Ride is sound and comfortable."

Larry F., TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Transmission shifting. Truck always seems to be shifting up and down, hunting for proper gear during normal driving."

Henry S., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Handles beautifully especially on snow and ice. Acceleration is very good, but not nearly as powerful and fast as the Tundra 5.7 L engine."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"easy to drive and responds well to controls"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"acceleration seems sluggish, uphill power is weak"

Anonymous, GA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Acceleration is not smooth. Hesitates a lot."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Transmission shifts too frequently. Had an oil leak in engine within first 2000 miles. Overall a decent truck except for transmission shifting"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Mileage is in the 18mpg range. automatic transmission is constantly shifting above 50mph. rough ride. gas pedal is hard to push and when you do it jumps."

Anonymous, VT (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It has great acceleration and is the right size for my needs."

Leon K., AL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I have experienced a 3-4 second delay upon light acceleration after initially moving. The last time, while turning left on a green light almost caused a collision with a vehicle coming from the other direction. This has only occurred 3 times since purchasing the vehicle, but twice in the last 2 months. A Toyota factory rep. drove the Tacoma and told the dealer service manager that he verified the problem with my vehicle. He said the factory knows about the problem and is working on a "FIX". I asked them to provide me with a vehicle to drive until such time as a fix is implemented on my vehicle, but was refused."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I like that you can turn on the power mode when driving for faster acceleration. Has lots of power when you need it. Can at times feel sluggish without it. Other than that, it seems responsive."

Luke S., TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It takes a bit to get accelerated but we bought a 4 cylinder so that’s our fault"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"My Tacoma, has great acceleration and if "floorboarded" it will surprise you at the jump and rapidness it reaches the desired speed! Very satisfying in this department; but normal driving, auto shifts from 6th (overdrive) to 5th come often and generate a roar in the cab that is much louder than I would desire. If I could change this, the vehicle would be far more suitable for driving at speeds above 50 mph."

Ken C., KY (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very smooth for a truck passing is a breeze"

A F., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Transmission shifts weird. I feel like I have to really push on the accelerator to get moving."

Michael R., NJ (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The acceleration is sluggish and the transmission seems to be searching for the proper gear when operating at lower speeds or climbing a hill. Very noisy when accelerating from 0 to 60 kms."

S B., ON (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Has great acceleration when needed. Steers and handles really well. Great stopping power. Quiet when windows are up"

George P., NH (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"handling is good for a stiff suspension. It bounces well. The acceleration is poor, and the transmission hunts quite often at highway speeds."

Anonymous, OK (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"IT is weak on acceleration. It has an issue with the accuracy of the speedometer, and when it malfunctioned, needed to be in garage waiting new part, this was after third failure."

Lawrence D., VA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The acceleration is terrible. Underpowered and extremely hesitant. It's like, "oh, you want me to speed up?" I wish Toyota would put the 4 liter engine back in. I lost power without even reaping the benefits of a good gas mileage boost. Handling is so so. Feels like you could lose control when going over train tracks and other large obstacles."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"crisp acceleration and steering"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"under powered"

Tim H., UT (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It is a very comfortable ride for a truck"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Poor acceleration and throttle response. I opted for the 2.7L 4 cylinder engine and I new feel this is too small for a truck of this size and weight."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It has no zip and acceleration is sluggish."

John B., ME (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The pwoer of the drivetrain feels like it's pulling you along...like the body of the truck cant keep up - it's awesome. The truck with the 3.5L is quick to respond in all traffic conditions as in dodging a pet on the roadway, or another driver's unaticipated action."

Jody A., NY (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Needs higher revs to reach the power band than my FJ Cruiser"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The vehicle has good acceleraion. When srtarting off down hill the automatic transmission seems to pick the lowest gear which makes the engine rev and the acceleration is a little jerky."

Derek B., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Handles well in the sand and the acceleration is just right when I need to pass or pull into traffic."

Tonya J., WA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very sluggish compared to my 2011 tacoma"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Great"

George K., WI (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Lousy transmition"

Jose R., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"it does just fine"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"good for a pickup truck."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The acceleration could be a bit quicker."

Dale G., IL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Poor acceleration, especially with trailer. Engine struggles on hills, especially with trailer (typically running 4500 rpm to maintain 60 mph). Four wheel capabilities (4WD) are outstanding"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The car is a road DOG: it will not accelerate at highway speeds to the point it is dangerous (see Toyota service bull TSB-0077-16) and Toyota has NOT fixed it; it is well known 2016 and 2017 Tacoma transmissions are failed equipment yet Toyota is still shipping them and NOT making the repairs. Further, thus far Toyota has refused to reprogram the cars buzzer with the option that the owners manual states is my choice. I am on my last Toyota, and they used to be such a good company. Times change don't they?"

Michael P., FL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Transmission feels sluggish by design. Not having power seat for $42000 vehicle is rediculous"

Willard D., ME (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Reliability is 100%...I have never had a problem with my 2017 Tacoma. Rock solid dependability by Toyota. Ride is great and it is well designed for truck work."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Excellant!"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Too much searching for the right gear. Under powered engine in order to achieve MPG."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Great off road capabilities. Poor acceleration. Poor power at highway speeds when acceleration is needed."

Gerald B., MA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Quick engine and sport shifter."

Charles G., MI (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Both acceleration & handling are fine."

Glen D., ON (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"good visibility, 4 doors"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very quiet seats a bit firm"

Anonymous, NV (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Leather seats are comfortable, but there is no power seat option in any 2017 Tacoma, posing a challenge for a tall person to sit upright comfortably."

Andrew W., AL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The driver seat is very difficult to get comfortable. The position of the driver seat is also challenge to get in and out. As for noise, there is a little outside noise but its not bad."

Khristopher C., NC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very comfortable, I've driven for hours without needing a break. It is quiet (some noise from roof rails)."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The ride is very smooth. Seating is very comfortable."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Has a very small windshield for a vehicle of this size. Seats are somewhat uncomfortable and not easily adjustable. Entry through front doors is difficult if you are over 5.5 feet in height."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The seats are too low. Otherwise comfortable."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Cab is very noisey, especially if there is any wind. Seats are comfortable, handling is good but you can feel every bump in the road."

Glen D., ON (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very comfortable seats, esp on long trips"

Anonymous, MO (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It's a dream to drive now that I'm used to it."

Anonymous, NM (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The ride is very smooth. It doesn't feel like a truck at all."

Michael R., NJ (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seats are comfortable for long rides"

Robert U., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seat could be higher off the floor, it now kind of the same as the Camry."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The seats are a bit firm and can get uncomfortable on long drives. The Tacoma seats do appear to hold up well judging by the seats I saw on older vehicles I test drove while shopping."

Nick B., LA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"On long road trips never get a sore back"

Robert C., CO (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Terribly uncomfortable seats. 4 cylinder engine not adequate for vehicle size and weight; no increase in gas mileage compared with 6 cylinder engines."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seats are very comfortable., handling is good. HOWEVER Noise level is so excessive that it spoils what would otherwise be a great driving experience."

Glen D., ON (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seats are comfortable. Noise level is low. Ride is very comfortable."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"SEATS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE"

Anonymous, TN (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The 2017 Tacoma's seats are great, much improvement over the 2008 Tacoma I previously owned. The ride also has improved a great deal of previous models."

Anonymous, MO (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I am 6'5" and it fits me perfectly. The steering telescoping is limited. CR complained about the seat being on the floor. I think the seat position is great. Noise is acceptable, and the ride is very good for what it is- a heavy duty 4 wheel drive pickup. It is not a car or a car-like behemoth pickup."

Anonymous, OK (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The comfort of our Tacoma is very good. We’ve taken several long trips (with pulling our trailer) and all went we’ll."

Anonymous, NM (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"cabin noise excessive"

Robert D., NY (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The seat adjustments are hard to get exactly right, especially if you change drivers."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"When outside temp is very warm(Phoenix, az), without using something between my back and the seat, my back sweats a lot more than previous vehicles. The fabric doesn't breathe."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Not enough leg space, dash lights very difficult to read."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seats are not as comfortable as I thought they could be for a vehicle that cost limits $40000"

Anna F., PA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The seat position is too low"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"good solid feel. truck should last me a long time."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Comfortable in every way but the road noise drowns out my wife's voice ( not complaining, just saying)!"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I'm 6' tall and I feel like the roof is too low for me. I have to bend my head down to see stop lights and anything else even slightly elevated."

Steven K., NC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"toyota tacoma seats could be more comfortable"

Tom W., NH (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Consumer Reports rated the seats as relatively uncomfortable. My wife find them comfortable--most appreciated on long trips."

John B., ME (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The driver's seat is not very comfortable on long drives. It's a bit hard, and doesn't cradle like other seats I've had."

Anonymous, NH (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"The seats are very comfortable. The leather interior is beautifully done. I love both the color and the styling."

Anonymous, NM (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"This truck rides smooth. Regarding seating the seat adjustments are manual; I wish they were power. I feel that the seats are positioned too low & wish the seat could be moved higher but it is a fixed seat."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It is a bit noisy and mostly wind noise at higher speeds."

Terry H., MA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Very smooth and quiet ride with great acceleration."

George K., WI (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seats are very on comfortable as is thr overall seating position. Seats are too narrow and side bolsters are too pronounced. Door opening is too small. I must grab the steering wheel to pull myself into the truck, there is no grab handle on the driver side as there is on the passenger side. At 5’7‿ tall I have to duck down to enter the driver seat to avoid hitting my head on the door frame. Very, very awkward. Four cylinder engine has barely adequate power until the AC is turned on. Then the power just seems to drain away."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Front seat have good comfort. Rear seats quite uncomfortable. Hard and unyielding, no headroom, good only for short trips."

Frank C., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"seats sit to low"

Bruce B., SC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"the seats fit very good, they hold you in place while making turns."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Roof entry height causes me to duck or bang my head."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"My Tacoma rides like a truck, which it is, it is somewhat noisy as far as road noise. The seats are about standard for comfort, neither real or low in ratings."

Nicholas H., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"very good lateral support and heating for the winter"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This is my 3rd Tacoma, every time I went to trade for a new vehicle (another Tacoma) the trade-in value was unbelievable what I got for my old truck. I have never paid for any repairs on these vehicles other then oil changes and tires."

Robert H., NY (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I feel that the price for this truck was very good compared to other vehicles. Especially considering the longevity of Toyota models."

Khristopher C., NC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"They are a solid vehicle, it is worth every penny I paid for it. I sold my 2007 Tacoma when I bought and got back 60.% of what I originally paid for it. It was low mileage and in excellent shape. I do not know of any other pick up that can do that. Never had any problems for the 10 years I owned it. I hope the new does as well!"

Barbara C., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Has the features we wanted included in the package"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"We got a very good deal on the Tacoma, how ever the engine does not have the power that our older 2010 Tacoma had"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"better value than the competion, Canyon"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"excellent value on resale"

Anonymous, MB (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Great value!!!!"

Malcolm D., SC (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I think I got a good deal as they good not locate the exact truck I wanted. I really wanted a left over 2016 but one good not be found with the options I wanted. So supposedly I was given extras like a moon roof and different running boards. I do not like that you can only unlock the doors without using the remote on the drivers side. I do not like that I could not get a power driver seat with the truck."

Larry C., NH (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Solid and reliable (so far) BUT they omit small items that are irritating - like not including the keyless entry lock / unlock pads on the passenger side and not putting a grab handle on the driver side"

William S., TN (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Extremely capable pick-up truck that can haul heavy loads and still maintain stability. Very good off road and in the snow."

Jody A., NY (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Rides smoother, quieter than '08 Tacoma & better gas mileage. Many more electronics to figure out but cool once you do. Transmission shifts a lot compared to older models seems annoying. 3 pc. folding truck bed cover very sturdy but weighs 80 lbs.! Like to sell & get a lighter one. Otherwise feel really good experience driving it."

George P., NH (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It is a good vehicle for truck uses, hauling stuff to the dump, for instance, but the height of the bed makes it somewhat difficult to load. It seems to be well built, and I am hoping to have for a long time."

Nicholas H., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Buy a 6 cylinder engine, not a 4cylinder; gas mileage is about the same."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"I have owned 35 new vehicles in my lifetime to include four previous pickup trucks of which two were Tacomas. This Tacoma is absolutely one of the TOP values for my money of all my previous vehicles. I got "a lot of truck" for my money!"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Great off road capabilities. Reliable."

Gerald B., MA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"$23000 paid price 22-25 mpg Low maintenance costs"

Robert C., CO (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Toy was expensive for small truck but i paid price because of reliability from previus toyotas i or members of my family have owned."

Robert U., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"its a 300k vehicle. Will last you forever"

Caitlyn C., FL (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Seems to stand up well"

Anonymous, NH (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Really like the truck. Does everything well for us. Navigation is not great. Update is expensive and have no idea if it would be better."

Bruce J., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Wxcellwnt value for the money"

M O., NY (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Swiss army knife of trucks"

John V., AZ (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"No matter how well you think you have all your ducks in a row; the sales team WILL try to dupe you. They will wear you down for hours and hours-this is their training and they do it very well. DO read ALL the fine print as you sign. This is the first time in thirty years that I have dealt with a sales team in person. I NEVER will again. It has always been over the phone. Nuff said. I was robbed by the dealer. If it weren't for that, I would be happy with the value of my Tacoma."

Thomas W., VT (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"It came standard with many features that other vehicles charged extra for...cruise controls, for example."

Anna F., PA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"There is nothing that retains its value better than a Toyota Tacoma. Knowledgeable buyers can get a new one, for the same price as used ones are selling for."

Jim N., GA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Great value factory-built off-road vehicle"

Daniel C., NV (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"Far better value for the money for a basic well built truck than the others I drove (F150, silverado, colorado, dodge). Not as fancy but $10,000 cheaper for the same truck, and with great Toyota resale value as well."

Michael G., CA (2017 Toyota Tacoma)

"great truck!"
