Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

The second-generation of the born-again Beetle retains its distinctive iconic looks, while providing a roomier cabin and distinctive interior touches. The car also dispenses with the word "New" in its name -- probably a good idea since the modern Beetle had been around since 1998. This Beetle drives decently, but doesn't excel anywhere and shows penny-scrimping compromises.

Handling is no more than ordinary. While the ride is compliant, it's not as tied down as we'd expect from a sporty coupe. Power came from the standard 170-hp, five-cylinder engine, which was punchy enough, but a little noisy. The manual gearbox works well, but clutch travel is long. Further, even with the base engine and stick shift, fuel economy was unimpressive at 26 mpg.

What Owners Say

Loose interior trim or moldings

"Door trim comes loose and will not stay attached."

Barry T., TX (2013 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This car was advertised by a White Plains, NY VW dealership as VW Certified Pre-Owned, but the driver side tweeter was loose. It was obvious in their website photos - and I had asked that this be fixed before I flew out to get the car. This repair was not done. They assured when I arrived that it was an easy fix and they would send me a new tweeter. Despite several follow-up requests, this did not arrive until 47 days later, and only after I got VW Corporate involved. Then, per my local VW dealership, it turns out that the tweeter couldn’t be reinstalled without replacing the door panel too, because it had several cracks in the clips below the tweeter that hold the door to the door frame. The White Plains, NY dealership refused to help with this matter despite me and VW Corporate contacting them about the damage and subsequent costs of over $1700 just to bring the door to CPO standards. There was no explanation from the NY dealership nor from VW Corporate on how or why such a car could have qualified as a CPO car. Also at this point, VW Corporate said there was nothing they could do to help. In my opinion, anyone who considers a VW Certified Pre-Own car needs to be very cautious about any pre-existing conditions as apparently they are not covered. This was my second VW CPO car and I was so impressed the first time that I decided it was a good decision again. Obviously not."

David Z., WI (2013 Volkswagen Beetle 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Many plastic pieces would come loose. Not the most glamorous interior"
