Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Volkswagen Golf owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"Very slow response to voice with unpredictable results. Irregular functionality with bluetooth phone for music (bluetooth phone connection is good)"

James H., NY (2015 Volkswagen Golf SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Display screen goes blank

"The entertainment unit had a bad video port. The screen itself turned out to be fine. The dealer switched out the entertainment unit and all was fixed. It was under warranty."

Patrick M., SC (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Entertainment unit randomly turns off, bad experience with the iPod connection"

Diego M., ON (2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"iPod connection doesn't load right away, it sometimes turns off automatically, or jumps to the radio. Really disappointing since I used to have a 2011 Golf, and the system was flawless"

Diego M., ON (2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When I'm using bluetooth music and a phone call comes in, the bluetooth may or may not reconnect at the end of the phone call. Even if it does resume, the volume is so low I cannot hear it without completely readjusting the volume."

Bill B., AR (2015 Volkswagen Golf SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Hardware replacement

"The infotainment system completely went out. The dealer wanted me to spend $2200 for a replacement - but fortunately I was able to get them to replace it for $50. There was a technical bulletin on this exact problem. I am now getting an extended warranty - bumper to bumper to cover this car."

Anonymous, (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Volume know on control unit intermittent"

Anonymous, (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"often sends me in the wrong direction or via the wrong route. More than 5 times has defaulted to a map of downtown LA though I have never been there"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Pairs well, but sometimes my phone will spontaneously start playing music over the car's speakers"

Christopher B., MN (2015 Volkswagen Golf S 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Unreliable. Every time I switch between radio and bluetooth, it is roulette whether the bluetooth will reconnect when I select it. Additional complaint---the battery went out with no indication it was getting weak. Had to pay a towing fee for something I could have fixed myself had some diagnosis been available."

Bill B., AR (2015 Volkswagen Golf SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"THE SURIUS RADIO FUNCTION STOPPED WORKING AND THE RADIO HAD TO BE REPLACED."

Anonymous, WI (2015 Volkswagen Golf S 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Appears to be a software issue, sometimes when starting the car the radio does not come back to the last station listened to, but one at the next frequency step down."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Golf eGolf Electric)

"Radio has alzheimers i.e. forgets which station it was tuned to"

Robert P., OR (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Speakers

Anonymous, MD (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"DEF line blockage. Repaired under warranty."

Anonymous, AB (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"National Lawsuit for emission cheating device installed by VW. Purchased my VW Golf new 3 months before the EPA made there findings public"

Anonymous, AB (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"VW lied about the emissions and performance of its 2.0L diesel engines. Executive management and engineering approved changing the ECU programming to output invalid test results. VW TDI vehicles pollute the environment and I opted to turn this vehicle back into VW as a result of the US class action. I will never purchase a VW again"

Kris A., OR (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"VW, as is now well known, intentionally programmed their emissions sensors to give false readings... which we now know resulted in these cars putting out much more pollution than allowable. I sold my car back to VW because of this... and experience that took MANY months (I would call it intentional obstruction), but which I was finally paid back for 6 months after starting the process"

Lawrence H., FL (2015 Volkswagen Golf S 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The ad blue injector line had a small leak and parts had to come from Germany. Not serious but took some time. I was provided with a service loaner"

Anonymous, AB (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Diesel Particulate Filter became plugged."

Anonymous, WI (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"DEF fluid injector kept leaking. Had to be repaired twice before the problem subsided."

Anonymous, (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The diesel exhaust fluid system was leaking and caused a check engine light. The light came on driving home after purchasing the car. Took them a month to get the new DEF lines and get them installed."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Fuel cap

"Near daily, multiple times a day for entire life of ownership get "check gas cap" and engine light / ODBC for lose fuel cap. Checked numerous it's fine. Dealer has stated fine. Obviously it's not. Dealer refuses to fix"

Peter T., HI (2015 Volkswagen Golf SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Fuel pump

"The fuel line into the fuel pump was leaking."

James M., CO (2015 Volkswagen Golf SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The high pressure fuel pump failed on the car. When it fails it sends metal shavings and debris into the lines and damages the injectors and could even get inside the pistons. I was lucky that the engine wasn't damaged, but the fuel lines and injectors had to be replaced. Research shows it's a common problem with Golf TDIs. The dealer gave a ton of pushback about repairing it, even though I bought it CPO and it was still under warranty. They dragged their feet and didn't offer me a loaner. I got the run around and they weren't going to cover the repair. $8k to replace everything damaged. Went to VW corporate and they forced them to do the repair. Parts are hard to find and the car was in the shop for 3 months."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

Thomas W., UT (2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"inconsistent intermittent functioning, took over a year to finally understand it was the compressor"

Anonymous, QC (2015 Volkswagen Golf SEL 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My air conditioner stopped blowing cold air for a couple of days. I took it in and they said it would cost $1000 to replace. They fixed it same day that I took it in."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Golf SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Automatic climate control

"Very slow to adjust temperature....over 5 min to warm car from cold start."

Jo G., CA (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"When starting with a warm engine or warm interior and set at "Auto" the car is set to produce refrigerated air no matter what the inside or outside temp is-- just stays very cold unless I set the thermostat at over 85 degrees"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Blower (fan) motor

"Excess noise requiring a new fan assembly. Covered under warranty but I can only imagine what it would have cost if it were not. Very early for that to have gone"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Volkswagen Golf SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The servo motor which changes between fresh and recirculated air stopped working, and make a loud almost hammer-like sound when it tries to actuate. VW has ordered a space but not replaced it yet"

Anonymous, IL (2015 Volkswagen Golf S 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Condenser

"Since the VW was under warranty, I took it to the VW dealer to find out the reason that the cooling system wasn't working. The dealer indicated that a stone passed through the grille and hit the condenser causing the refrigerant to leak out. The dealer estimated about $1250 to fix it. Since I had $500 deductible Comprehensive, I filed a claim with State Farm. Thinking that the same event could happen as I drove home after having the condenser was repaired/replaced, I decided to install a welded"

Michael D., AZ (2015 Volkswagen Golf R 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Electrical failure

"There is a controls issue, where the driver's side face vent cannot be shut off by selecting a different air output, and the foot vents cannot be turned on at all. VW has not yet fixed this, though they admit that it is under warranty"

Anonymous, IL (2015 Volkswagen Golf S 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Heater system

"I live in Winnipeg where it gets very cold. Unfortunately, my car was accidentally sold without the supplementary electric heating system, making it a very cold vehicle."

Ross B., MB (2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The heating coil for the front passenger zone stopped working during the winter. The problem was fixed under warrantee. No issues since."

Anonymous, (2015 Volkswagen Golf SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Anonymous, CA (2015 Volkswagen Golf S 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Keyless entry

"Remote stopped working . I changed the battery of the remote every week . The VW dealer ordered a new remote ( VW knew about the problem and the solution). On a second visit , the dealer reprogrammed all remotes. I did not knew there was a lock hidden behind a plastic cap , that I could take off, and then use my key in that lock in the old fashion way"

Jean V., QC (2015 Volkswagen Golf 1.8T 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
