    NHTSA: Click it or ticket

Consumer Reports News: May 03, 2007 05:54 PM

Just in case New Jersey Governor John Corzine's recent near-fatal accident — he wasn't wearing a seat belt, and has since apologized and paid a fine for his transgression — hasn't convinced you to buckle up, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is reissuing an old reminder: Click It or Ticket. A new campaign will target the estimated 20 percent of drivers who still don't buckle up, and will include an advertising campaign in local and national media — and random police checkpoints to give the effort some teeth. Much of the campaign targets teenagers and young adults; in 2005, 7,460 drivers ages 15 to 20 were involved in fatal crashes, and 62 percent of all teenagers killed in car crashes weren't wearing seatbelts.

The campaign will start May 21st, but you don't need to wait until then. That belt is there for a reason. Start using it.
