HDTV: See which display type suits your needs

Consumer Reports News: October 30, 2008 06:08 AM

If you're thinking about buying a flat panel HDTV for the holidays, you're probably asking yourself whether it should be a plasma or LCD.

Our Buying Advice on televisions gives you a complete rundown on the distinctions between the two display technologies, plus all the information you need on how to choose an HDTV that's right for your needs. We also looked specifically at the LCD vs. plasma debate in our recent report, "LCD or Plasma TVs?"

To get you started, here's a brief rundown of the highs and lows of LCD and plasma HDTVs:

    LCD HDTVs

Common sizes: 26 to 52 inches.

    Highs:

    Lows:

    • Most have a more limited viewing angle.
    • Deepest blacks don't match plasma.
    • Images can blur during fast-moving scenes.

    Plasma HDTVs

Common sizes: 42 to 60 inches.

    Highs:

    • Virtually unlimited viewing angle.
    • Deeper blacks and better contrast than on LCDs.
    • No motion blur.
    • More screen for the money in largest sizes.

    Lows:

    • Not as bright as LCD sets.
    • Shiny screens show reflections in bright rooms.
    • Static images might leave a temporary or permanent impression on screen.
    • Use more power than LCD sets.
