8 deaths, 600 illnesses, 1840 recalls and 2 shuttered plants
A second processing plant run by the Peanut Corporation of America has been shut down after private lab tests showed there may have been salmonella at the facility. According to the Associated Press, the tainted products were discovered before reaching consumers. PCA owns the plant in Blakely, Georgia that is the source of the ongoing salmonella outbreak. The second shuttered plant is in Plainview, Texas.
Meanwhile, the number of those sickened by the outbreak has climbed to 600 with the addition of one more state, Florida, making it 44 states. The latest confirmed illness began on January 23, 2009. (Experts say the actual number of victims is far greater as many cases go unreported.) Eight deaths have been associated with the outbreak.
The number of recalled products containing PCA-supplied peanuts has grown exponentially and now tops 1,840, according to the searchable database maintained by the Food and Drug administration.
A hearing on the outbreak will be held by the House Energy and Commerce investigations subcommittee on Wednesday.
