Kraft and Frito-Lay recall pistachio products

Consumer Reports News: April 01, 2009 09:32 AM

Kraft and Frito-Lay are the latest companies to recall pistachio products in the wake of an investigation into a California pistachio processing plant where salmonella has been found. The pistachios were supplied by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc., which is recalling selected lots of pistachios from the 2008 crop year, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The recalled products were sold nationwide.

Kraft is recalling a wide variety of Planters and Back to Nature products (see the recall notice for details) including packages of just pistachios and mixed nut blends that include pistachios. There are 28 Planters products and eight Back to Nature products in the recall. More information is available from the FDA and Kraft Web sites.

Frito-Lay is recalling 1.75 oz. packages of Frito-Lay branded Salted Pistachios (in the shell) with sell-by dates between 14-Jul-09 through 29-Dec-09 and the UPC code: 0 28400 03888 1. The date is located on the front of each package. This is the only Frito-Lay product being recalled.

The FDA is advising consumers not to eat any products containing pistachios and to discard those on the recall list.

The FDA and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating salmonella contamination in pistachio products sold by Setton. The company has stopped all distribution of processed pistachios and has recalled one million pounds of its products. The contamination involves multiple strains of Salmonella.

The FDA is updating its list of recalled pistachio products, which is expected to grow. These recalls are not associated with the ongoing recall of peanut products. A database of peanut recalls—more than 3,000 products—can also be found on the FDA's Web site.
