Other Membership Benefits:
The Generation 2 crib's plastic hardware can break, and the drop side can detach from the side of the crib, opening a gap in which a baby can become trapped and strangle or suffocate. In addition, the mattress support can detach and create a space between the crib frame and the sagging mattress.
The CPSC has received reports dating back to 2002 of three infants who suffocated when the drop side detached and they were trapped, and reports of 20 other drop-side incidents, leading to children falling out of the crib, a broken arm, and bruising. It also has eight reports of mattresses detaching.
Because Generation 2 went out of business in 2005, the CPSC has limited information about the cribs including how many were sold and over what period of time. The agency believes that more than 500,000 cribs were sold. The recall notice lists some model numbers but emphasizes that all Generation 2 Worldwide and Childesigns full-size and portable drop-side cribs are included in the recall.
Owners of a recalled crib should contact the retailer from which it was purchased for an appropriate remedy. That may include a refund, replacement, or a store credit, depending on the retailer. Consumers are urged to tell the CPSC about any difficulties in obtaining a remedy from their retailer. It's also important that parents not use any crib with missing, loose, or broken hardware and to make sure to check and tighten loose hardware regularly. And never place babies in an adult bed as an alternative to a crib.
