The family sedan group is among the most competitive and largest category in the car market. While there are many choices fitting a variety of budgets, some models stand out more than others.
One example is the newly-redesigned 2011 Hyundai Sonata. The previous-generation Sonata was mid-pack in our ratings, but the new model ranks with our top-rated sedans.
The first thing you'll notice with the Sonata is the new design—coupe-like and swoopy. Unlike other cars with such a profile, such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Volkswagen Passat CC, the Sonata's visibility remains decent and the rear seat is roomy. Like the others, access is a bit inhibited due to the low roofline. The 198-hp, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder direct-injection engine delivers smooth performance and an outstanding 27 mpg overall.
The ride is firm and controlled, the steering is responsive, and handling is secure and forgiving even at its limits due to the standard stability control.
Inside, the cabin is roomy and airy and displays are easy to read and use. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes to help provide a comfortable driving position, but we recommend purchasing the power-adjustable driver's seat for additional range and easier seating adjustment.
