With the latest-generation Sonata, Hyundai came out with an aggressive strategy to be a true player in the midsized segment. The line would change from two traditional powertrains (four cylinder, V6) to three, and all would be four-cylinder engines.

The base sedan launched first, with a 198-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and six-speed transmissions. Being a sleek, attractive car has caused the Sonata to turn heads, but it is the overall value and fuel economy that has had our staffers talking. We recorded 27 mpg overall, and a most-impressive 39 mpg on the highway. Priced under $22,000, the Sonata GLS is among our highest-rated family sedans and even scores among the top vehicles of all kinds in our ratings. (See our Hyundai Sonata road test and ratings.)

Hyundai has also introduced a turbo model with 274 horsepower to provide an alternative to the V6-equipped competition. The 2.0-liter, direct-injection turbo engine is EPA-rated at 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway and it runs on regular gasoline.

More than an engine, the turbo version adds a sportier suspension and steering (in SE trim), as well as 18-inch aluminum wheels. The result is a much more engaging experience that has brought smiles to our staffers based on a preview drive.

The 2.0T is offered on the SE and Limited trim levels, starting at $24,145, plus $720 destination charges. The SE includes dark-chrome grille, chrome exterior trim, fog lamps, leather seat and steering-wheel trim, dual automatic climate control, basic power amenities, Bluetooth, and keyless remote. On the safety front, the car features standard side and curtain air bags, active head restraints, ABS, and stability control.

At $27,045, the Limited adds a power moon roof, full leather upholstery, heated seats, CD changer, HD radio, rear vents, side mirror turn indicators, and miscellaneous trim bits. Notably, it does not have the sport-tuned suspension and steering.

Next up for Sonata, a hybrid model coming later this year.
