Think plasma TVs and 720p resolution are on their way out? Not according to the latest analysis of U.S. TV sales by Portland, Oregon-based market research firm Quixel Research, which reports that plasma sales in general jumped 28 percent from the second quarter of this year, climbing 15 percent from unit sales a year ago.
Driving the resurgence: 720p plasma sales in the 50-inch screen size, which rocketed 65 percent. Sales of 42-inch 720p plasma TV were up a respectable 27 percent during the quarter. (See Quixel's results chart at the end of this post.)
Quixel says LCD TV sales were affected by some product shortfalls but were also impacted by aggressive plasma TV pricing. "In this recession, consumers care more about keeping money in their wallets than having a higher spec'd product," said Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel's principal.
Overall LCD TV sales volume in the 40-inch-and-larger segment fell 10 percent from the second to third quarter, though sales were up 16 percent year to year. An LCD bright spot was the 60-inch-and-larger LCD segment, where unit sale were were up 12 percent during the same period.
We'll be keeping track of TV sales and pricing trends, which are part of fee-based market research reports offered by firms such as Quixel and DisplaySearch. Given the aggressive pricing that's already happening, it should be interesting to see the TV sales trends and pricing emerge when the holiday buying season closes.
