[Update: Netflix confirmed on Friday, March 18 that it has purchased the series "House of Cards," which will be the company's first original content offering.]
Netflix might be preparing to spread its wings beyond DVDs by mail and streaming movies and television shows by streaming original Hollywood-produced content as well.
According to several news sources, Netflix is in negotiations with director David Fincher (of "The Social Network" fame) and actor Kevin Spacey for distribution rights to an upcoming political drama series, "House of Cards." Netflix could reportedly pay up to $100 million for launching the 26-episode series online.
If the talks are successful, Netflix will have taken a step toward becoming a source of original content. And if "House of Cards" succeeds, Netflix could become a serious competitor to traditional broadcast and cable TV networks that have offered distinctive, original drama series--AMC's "The Walking Dead" and HBO's "True Blood," for example.
As we've reported, streaming video services such as Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand have become increasingly popular TV options. And more TVs, set-top boxes, and Blu-ray players are offering easier access to those Net-based entertainment options. One possible fly in the ointment: If net neutrality fails and if home broadband services, such as AT&T, begin to cap data usage for their subscribers.
Would you turn to Netflix for first-run content, such as this upcoming political drama series starring Kevin Spacey? What else--if anything at all--should the company look into producing? Or are there already too many choices available for couch potatoes?
