More LCD TVs will use LED lighting by 2014

Consumer Reports News: April 29, 2011 01:53 PM

Flat-panel LCD TVs powered by LED backlights—often marketed as "LED TVs"—could soon become much more plentiful, according to research company DisplaySearch, of Santa Clara, CA.

DisplaySearch notes in a new report that demand for the solid-state lighting technology continues to be strong overall. But LCD makers are taking the lion's share of LED bulbs. By DisplaySearch's calculations, display makers will account for nearly 50 percent of the demand through 2013.

The good news from this, say the analysts, is that LED backlighting will soon be a feature in larger TVs rather than just in mobile PCs and small LCD TVs—those with screens under 40-inches, say.

The bad news, however, is that demands from TV makers will stunt growth of LED lighting in other areas. DisplaySearch says that LED lighting will account for only 9.6 percent of the market in 2014. Government incentive programs for more efficient lighting—for street lamps and such—will be key drivers.

Consumer Reports continually tests new HDTVs, including an increasing number of LCD TVs that use LED backlighting. Our experts found that when implemented well, LED TVs can perform admirably. But an LED-equipped set doesn't necessarily beat out conventionally lighted LCD TVs. Check our HDTV buying advice for more information on how to choose the right LCD TV for you. And our guide to understanding how new labels makes comparing bulbs easier offers good advice too.

TV Applications to dominate LED demand through 2013, says DisplaySearch [EE Times Europe]
