Blowing the whistle on unsafe strollers

Consumer Reports News: June 23, 2011 03:07 PM

In our Ratings of traditional, jogging, and all-terrain strollers, you'll find models that met and exceeded existing voluntary stroller standards. But in our years of testing, we've occasionally come across models that failed our tests, which ultimately got recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Here's proof:

In March, we warned readers that the Zooper Waltz stroller posed a strangulation risk to children. Our testing found that if a child was left unharnessed, he could slip down and get his head caught between the tray or grab bar and the seat. The same type of hazard on other strollers resulted in 11 infant deaths between 1995 and 2010. We notified the manufacturer of our findings as well as the Consumer Product Safety Commission. On May 27th, the CPSC announced a recall for the Zooper Waltz as well as three other Zooper models that posed the same hazard.

That was not the first time we blew the whistle on unsafe strollers. We uncovered the same strangulation hazard on three other strollers last year: Valco Baby and Tike Tech all-terrain strollers, and a Tike Tech jogging stroller. Similarly, the CPSC responded to our findings by issuing a recall notice for strollers from those brands.

And in 2009, our tests showed that buckles on Baby Jogger City Mini strollers could be released too easily and posed a fall hazard to children. That model, too, was recalled shortly thereafter.

Recently, we also found problems with brakes on the Britax B-Nimble, and just today, it was recalled too.

Our safety mission is to reduce the number of unsafe products in the marketplace, and to help educate consumers about the risks that they may face in and around their homes. Our independent testing helps support that mission by uncovering hidden hazards that sometimes not even our government safety agencies are aware of.
