Consumer Reports supports new crib regulations

Consumer Reports News: June 28, 2011 10:05 AM

Don Mays, our senior director for product safety and technical policy, spoke at a Capitol Hill press event today to support new, stringent federal crib regulations. Those regulations go into effect today.

We have long been an advocate for tougher crib standards. We have been testing cribs for more than 40 years and continue to test and rate cribs regularly. We also actively participate in the voluntary standards-setting process for cribs and other children's products.

Over the past several years, our marketplace has been flooded with poor-quality, mostly foreign-made cribs that were claiming the lives of innocent babies. According to the CPSC, at least 32 infants died since 2000 due to the defective drop side on cribs that presumably met all government regulations. But in 2008, we were thrilled to see the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act require new, safer crib standards to which all manufacturers must comply. Today, those new standards go into effect. After years of hard work to make sure that better safety standards were developed, consumers—and their babies—can now rest easier.

The tough, new standards that we pushed hard to achieve will put an end to unsafe cribs. Parents will no longer be faced with detaching dropsides, collapsing mattress supports, loosening hardware, and breaking spindles and slats. Now cribs need to be tested for safety before they go to the market, rather than relying on recalls to get unsafe cribs off the market and out of consumers' homes. Once again, parents can buy cribs with confidence and know that when they put their child to sleep at night, they won't have to worry about their safety.
