Merrick Pet Care, Inc. has announced the recall of one lot—248 cases—of Doggie Wishbone dog treats because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
The Amarillo, Texas-based company said the 248 cases were shipped to 10 states, and that retailers have been notified. No illnesses or consumer complaints were reported.
The 10 states where the recalled product was shipped are California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, New York, Rhode Island and Washington, according to PetProductNews.com.
The recall includes Doggie Wishbone treats with the item number 29050 and lot number 11031 with a "Best By" date of 30 Jan. 2013.
Salmonella can affect animals and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they haven't washed their hands afterward. Treats that have been opened should be disposed of in a safe way by depositing them in a covered trash receptacle.
Symptoms of Salmonella include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers immediately.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
Consumers who have purchased the Doggie Wishbone with the lot code 11031 are urged to return the unopened portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with further questions may also contact the company at 1-800-664-7387, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT.
