    Recall: Front Row Produce grape tomatoes—Salmonella

    Front Row Produce of St. Louis MO, has recalled its 10-ounce pint and 10-pound bulk grape tomatoes, supplied by Rio Queen Citrus because of potential Salmonella contamination, the Food and Drug Administration announced today.

    Salmonella was discovered after random testing by Rio Queen Citrus. Production was suspended while the investigation into the source of the problem continues. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall.

    The grape tomatoes were distributed throughout Missouri and Illinois to food service distributors and retail stores.

    The 10-ounce, clear plastic packages of grape tomatoes are marked with a Front Row Produce label on top. A lot number does not appear on the package, but is on the case label. The 10-ounce package lot numbers are: 2310802, 2310405, and 2510401. The recalled 10-pound bulk grape tomatoes are packaged for wholesale in a plain, brown cardboard box labeled only with lot number 2310801.

    As of today, all shipments of 10-ounce packages of Front Row Produce Grape Tomatoes will have a green sticker on the bottom of with the lot number. Any package that does not have this green sticker with a 7-digit number, should be considered suspect and under recall.

    Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the organism can get into the bloodstream, and producing more severe illnesses.

    If you bought one of the recalled 10-ounce packages of Front Row Produce grape tomatoes (or a 10-pound cases), you should discard the fruit. For more information call Front Row Produce at 314-241-4700.
