2010 Jeep Wranglers recalled due to possible fires

A safety recall has been issued for 2010 Jeep Wrangler sport-utility vehicles. Nearly 68,000 of the popular SUVs can catch fire due to a flaw in the design to protect the Wrangler's automatic transmission, warns the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Last month, the NHTSA had probed engine fires after receiving complaints from owners of 2010 Jeep Wrangler SUVs. The engineers at Chrysler and NHTSA's Office of Defect Investigations have traced the fire issue to the Wrangler's skid plate, which is designed to protect the SUV's automatic transmission during off-road adventures. According to the NHTSA, the Wrangler's anti-skid plate is catching debris which "can ignite without warning, resulting in a fire."

Chrysler will notify Jeep Wrangler owners affected by this recall and expects to replace the skid plate with a skid bar for free.

The 2012 Jeep Wrangler is one of the lowest-rated vehicles in Consumer Reports' tests. However, the Wrangler definitely has its fans. In fact, Jeff Bartlett, deputy editor of Consumer Reports Cars, confessed a rather torrid love affair with the iconic American off-road vehicle.

For more information, consumers can call Chrysler toll-free (800-853-1403) and reference its recall number. M22, or visit the NHTSA website: www.SaferCar.gov.
