Recently, a video of a Walmart ice cream sandwich that purportedly didn't melt in the hot sun went viral on the Web. Consumer Reports wondered what kept that frozen treat from melting, so we checked out its ingredients along with those of many other popular packaged foods.
What we found: They contain "gums"—food additives that thicken, stabilize, add texture to food, and yes, help prevent ice cream from melting. What's also important: Some gums may not be safe for everyone to eat. Watch the video above to learn more or here.
