Sling TV beefs up its content offerings with more sports and AMC

The streaming service is also now available on Roku devices, with Amazon to come

    Published: February 10, 2015 12:10 PM

As part of its official launch this week, Dish's Sling TV streaming TV service is adding content to its $20-per-month package and is now available on more streaming media players.

Sling TV's basic $20-per-month Best of Live TV package will soon add the AMC network (AMC, IFC, Sundance, and BBC America), Univision, and Maker Studios' Polaris+ channel.

Sports-hungry viewers who want to cut the cable cord now have more reason to consider Sling TV: The service's $5-per-month Sports Extra add-on includes a number of ESPN channels, SEC Network, Universal Sports, Univision Deportes, and beIN Sports.

Sports Extra joins two other $5-per-month packages—one with news and informational programming (HLN, Cooking Channel, DIY and Bloomberg TV) and the other with children's channels (Disney Junior, Disney XD, Boomerang, Baby TV and Duck TV).

In addition to expanding programming choices, Dish announced that Sling TV is available on more devices, including most Roku boxes, stick-style players, and TVs, as well as iOS and Android devices, and Mac and Windows computers.

Support for additional devices, including Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV StickGoogle Nexus media player, and Xbox One, is coming soon. LG says its Smart TVs running webOS will add support for Sling TV in the future.

    Is Sling TV for you?

Sling TV comes as close to à la carte programming as we've seen, though its offerings aren't complete. To get the major broadcast networks, for instance, you'll need to use an antenna. And Sling doesn't include Cinemax, HBO, and Showtime.

During our first look at Sling TV, we found that its image quality wasn't as good as that on cable and satellite TV, and there was significant latency in receiving the programming compared with cable and satellite TV feeds.

Remember that the quality of the video you'll receive is dependent on your broadband speed, so if you decide to get more of your TV programming via an online service, you may find yourself bumping up the speed of your Internet connection—most likely at an additional cost.
