Packaged Muffins Recalled Due to Listeria Risk
Walmart, 7-Eleven, and Stop & Shop among the stores removing the products
Give & Go Prepared Foods announced this week that it is recalling more than two dozen types of its packaged muffins sold at national retailers because of a risk that they could be contaminated with listeria. This bacteria can cause significant and sometimes deadly infections in young children, older people, those who are pregnant, and people with weakened immune systems.
There have been no reported illnesses. The company says it is recalling the muffins out of an abundance of caution.
The recall involves several brands—including Freshness Guaranteed, Uncle Wally’s, The Worthy Crumb, Great Value (Walmart), Marketside (Walmart), Stop & Shop, and 7-Eleven Selects—and a variety of flavors.
The muffin packages carry “best when used by” dates anywhere from Aug. 23 to Sept. 5, 2021. Some packages, however, display only a UPC or lot code. See the full list of recalled products and UPC and lot codes on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.
About Listeria
Listeria is the third-leading cause of food poisoning in the U.S., resulting in an estimated 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The symptoms usually appear one to four weeks after someone eats a tainted food, but symptoms have also occurred on the same day and up to 70 days after, the CDC says. These include fever and diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, in addition to fever and muscle aches.
Listeria poses a special risk to pregnant people. They are about 10 times more likely than others to get a listeria infection, the CDC says. About 20 percent of infections in pregnant people result in miscarriage; in about 3 percent of the cases, listeriosis leads to newborn death.
