Coffee Maker
Ninja Specialty CM401
Ninja Specialty CM401

    Ninja Specialty CM401

CR’s take: A more affordable take on Ninja's Coffee Bar brewers, the Ninja Specialty CM401 is a terrific all-in-one machine, capable of brewing hot and iced coffee, lattes, macchiatos, and other specialty brews. In our tests it receives an Excellent rating for brew performance, and its glass carafe handles with ease. This model is also packed with features, including an over-ice brew mode for iced coffee, a built-in milk frother, brew-strength control, and brew-size adjustment for everything from travel mugs to full carafes. It's one of the most versatile coffee makers we’ve tested.

    Cuisinart Supreme Grind Automatic...

      Cuisinart Supreme Grind Automatic...

CR's take: This Cuisinart coffee grinder earns a Good rating in overall performance and is a breeze to clean, earning an Excellent score in that regard. It also features dial, button, and slider controls, and can hold about 8 ounces of coffee. At this price, it's a solid pick for turning out a tasty cup of joe.

      Farberware HF-919B

        Farberware HF-919B

CR’s take: Its relatively good price and solid performance make the Farberware HF-919B air fryer a CR Best Buy. It’s among the quietest of the air fryers we’ve tested, earning an Excellent rating in our noise tests. (You can actually hear the mechanical timer ticking over the fan noise.) The dials are fairly easy to read and use, but the nooks and crannies of the food basket make it tough to clean. The basket’s measured capacity is 3.2 quarts. The two-year warranty is longer than the ones for most of the models we've tested.

        Vitamix Professional Series 300

          Vitamix Professional Series 300

CR’s take: Vitamix earns an Excellent rating in predicted brand reliability, according to our survey of CR members. That means this blender will continue to produce thirst-quenching icy drinks for years to come. It’s also terrific at blending soups and can even heat them using the friction created by the fast-whirring blades. In our test, raw ingredients became steaming soup in 5 minutes.

          Hilti SFD 2-A
          Hilti SFD 2-A

            Hilti SFD 2-A

CR’s take: This unique drill falls in our light-duty category because of the limitations of its fixed ¼-inch chuck. That’s not a problem, though, if you’re not drilling large holes. Plus, the Hilti SFD 2-A goes for half the price of many cordless drills with similar capabilities while still proving reasonably powerful. A built-in LED light helps illuminate your workspace, while the drill’s modest 2.2-pound weight minimizes strain and fatigue, earning it an Excellent rating for handling. One of the biggest selling points is perhaps the 20-year warranty, which goes far beyond the standard three years for cordless drills. It comes with two 2.6-amp-hour batteries, a belt clip, and a soft-sided case.

            Canon Ivy Cliq

              Canon Ivy Cliq

CR's take: Make every day #ThrowbackThursday for Mom with a fun instant camera. The Canon Ivy Cliq nails the basic promise of instant cameras: You point, you shoot, and a few minutes later a photo emerges. Not just any photo, but an image with great dynamic range. It's also the easiest camera to use among the three Zink models we tried. You can choose whether to print a photo in a 2-inch square with a white border beneath it or the more elongated 2-inch-by-3-inch format. The model also gives you the option to reprint the last photo taken in case someone else wants a copy.

                Kodak PixPro SP1

CR's take: Despite its diminutive size—perfect for throwing in a vacation bag—the Kodak PixPro action cam is rugged enough to withstand a 7-foot drop and water-resistant to a depth of 33 feet. The 2-plus hours of battery life per charge put it among the best in its class. The camera comes with a 1.5-inch LCD and an image stabilizer to counteract shaky hands, not to mention vibrating handlebars. According to our testers, the camera delivers good photos and video. And there’s a nice extra: the ability to capture photos at 10 frames per second in burst mode.

                  Fujifilm X-T20 w/ 16-50mm OIS

CR's take: Thanks in part to a CR score of Very Good for its easy-to-use interface, the Fujifilm X-T20 is one of the stronger mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras CR has tested. Video quality earns only a Good rating, but testers liked its versatile manual controls, which make this a good option for buyers who want to stretch their photography skills. It also boasts minimal shutter lag, meaning you're less likely to miss a shot.

                  Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700
                  Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

                    Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

CR’s take: The Bose Smart Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 are the long-awaited successor to the company’s flagship QuietComfort 35 Series II headphones (which are usually at least $100 cheaper). And the two models are almost identical in performance: Both deliver superb sound quality and noise cancellation. However, the Bose 700 earphones have a much slimmer profile when folded up, and they have a few updated elements, including more integration with digital assistants, touch controls, and sensors for Bose’s “augmented reality” apps. Bose has kept some of the best-loved features from its older models as well, such as adjustable levels of noise cancellation, a monitoring mode to let in sound from your environment, and an advertised 20-hour battery life.

                    Amazon Echo Buds

                      Amazon Echo Buds

CR’s take: Amazon's Echo Buds have many of the same benefits of Apple's new noise-canceling AirPods Pro, but they're a lot cheaper. The Echo buds come with noise-canceling technology designed in collaboration with Bose and feature hands-free integration with Alexa. Amazon claims the Echo Buds have 5 hours’ worth of battery life, and the included case has a built-in battery that will recharge the headphones four times on the go. (CR doesn't test battery life in headphones.) With a Very Good rating for sound quality and superb noise reduction, they're a decent choice for the more critical listener for both music and movie soundtrack playback.

                        Jabra Move Style Edition

CR's take: The Jabra Move Style Edition, an on-ear Bluetooth model with a sleek appearance and better-than-average sound quality, comes with convenient features, like controls for calls, playback, and volume, and the option to forgo Bluetooth and use the detachable audio cable included with your purchase. The headphones have a closed, isolating design that will keep some noise from leaking in or out during a listening session. The headphones have an advertised 14-hour battery life, more than enough to get you through a day of listening.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 (Core i5)

CR's take: This 12.3-inch 2-in-1 detachable laptop is new to CR's ratings as of November. Compared with the previous year's Surface Pro model, its updated Core i5 processor shows faster speeds in our tests, suitable for complex school or office work. But you might notice a lag when performing media editing or playing video games. The display is bright, has wide viewing angles, and shows lifelike colors. Battery life is reasonably long at 10.5 hrs in web- browsing tests, and at just 2.4 pounds, it's lighter than typical laptops of this size category. And of course, there’s something to be said for being able to remove the keyboard to use it like a tablet.

                            Amazon Fire HD 10 (32GB)

CR's take: The Fire HD 10 is the highest-scoring Amazon tablet in our ratings. The 10-inch screen is bright and crisp, and has a wide viewing angle, meaning it’ll stay sharp even if you’re not looking at it straight on. (That makes it ideal for watching movies and TV shows with multiple people.) The screen is also ideal for reading. Comic book fans may especially be interested in the Fire HD 10 because it can display a single full page in almost the same size as the print original. Amazon owns Comixology, a digital retailer and subscription service with more than 100,000 comic books and graphic novels available for download. This tablet boasts an impressive battery life, too, delivering 11.1 hours for browsing the web or watching movies.

                              Apple Watch Series 5 (40mm)...

CR’s take: Apple’s Series 5 watches get top ratings from our testers for basics such as ease of use, step counting, and heart-rate tracking. They offer built-in GPS for tracking distance workouts and oodles of apps to help you customize your device. Pay for the version with cellular service and you can field calls and stream music from your favorite app—all without lugging your smartphone. The watch’s microphone will let you dictate replies to text messages as well as summon Apple’s digital assistant, Siri.

                                Google Home Max

CR's take: The Google Home Max was the first really good-sounding smart speaker, and it remains the best-sounding model on the market. Our testers like its solid bass and clean midrange—that all-important sonic window where most instruments and vocals lie—along with plenty of volume. The Home Max’s smart functions work seamlessly with Google Assistant. It doesn’t have the same number of skills as Amazon’s Alexa and doesn’t work with as many smart home devices, but some users find Google’s interface to be more user-friendly. You can also integrate several Home Max speakers throughout your home, either singly or in stereo pairs, and supplement them with smaller and less expensive Google Home speakers or other speakers with Chromecast capability as part of a multiroom system.

                                  Fluance Fi50

CR’s take: Sure, the faux-wood finish and retro design may remind you of grandpa’s Vista Cruiser station wagon from the 1970s. But performance-wise, the Fluance Fi50 is very much a creature of the 21st century. The enclosure of this hefty 13-pound speaker is made of MDF, or medium-density fiberboard, which is often used in kitchen cabinets and speaker cabinets of high-end models. The manufacturer claims that the material damps resonance and allows the twin 5-inch speakers to perform at their best. Our testers report that the Fi50 delivers very good sound quality and is easy to use. It features analog audio inputs, along with Bluetooth, an LCD display, and a remote. The Fi50 operates on AC power and is designed for indoor use.
