I Submitted a Bissell Recall Request Form and Finally Received My Refund Check

When Bissell recalled the Steam Shot Steam Cleaner, it offered users a $40 refund check or $60 credit to shop on its site

In order to receive your refund check or store credit, Bissell asked that consumers submit a picture of the recalled steam cleaners with the power cord cut.

Bissell recalled more than 3 million of its popular Steam Shot Steam Cleaners in July 2024 because the appliance posed a burn hazard to users.

CR’s article on the recall included instructions for owners of the recalled steam cleaners on how to get a $40 refund or $60 in Bissell credit.

    More on Recalls

The Steam Shot Steam Cleaner was really popular, especially on #CleanTok, where hundreds of content creators uploaded satisfying videos of the gunk they cleaned from all areas of their homes with the device.

I bought a model and evaluated it myself before the recall and thought, Why not go through the recall request process, too, so I could report back on it? Would it be complicated? How quickly would I receive my refund? Would I ever even get a check at all?

    Here’s how it went.

Filling Out the Recall Request Form

The instructions on Bissell’s website were simple. All I had to do was cut the steam cleaner’s power cord close to the body of the device, remove a sticker with the serial number from the bottom, place the sticker on the side of the appliance just under the Bissell name, and take a photo of the steam cleaner.

The form required some basic information, including my name, mailing address, email, and phone number, plus the photo I took showing the cut power cord. I selected the $40 refund option, submitted my form, and immediately received an automated email confirming that it had been received by Bissell. That was it. Now, I just had to wait for my check.

    Waiting for the Refund Check

Just over a month after I submitted the recall request form, I received a second automated email from Bissell letting me know that I would be receiving my refund check in four to six weeks. Six weeks later and no sign of the check, I started to worry that it was never going to arrive.

Finally, eight weeks after the email I received on Aug. 5, a $40 refund check from Bissell arrived at CR’s Yonkers, N.Y., headquarters. I was surprised to find that the check was dated Aug. 29, 2024, with a “void after 60 days” notice just above the dollar amount. That means I had just a few weeks to cash my check before I missed out on my refund. We reached out to the brand to find out more about this void date but did not hear back by the time of publication.

In the instructions for the recall request, Bissell mentioned that the steam cleaner should not be disposed of until a refund check or store credit was received. With the check in hand, I could finally get rid of the model we kept in our lab.

    The Bottom Line

Filling out the recall request form was easy, and though I had to wait a little longer than expected for the refund check, I did eventually receive it.

If you haven’t received your refund or store credit yet, contact Bissell at RecallNA@bissell.com or 855-417-7991 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on Saturday.
