Tesla Motors has updated the Model S sedan with a freshened exterior, new trim elements, and upgraded air filtration system. These elements go into production starting today at the company’s Fremont, Calif., assembly plant.

The most noticeable change is the face-lifted front, which now features a pouty look devoid of any grille-like centerpiece. The headlamps are also redesigned, with the goal to move the Model S closer to the styling of the all-new Model X SUV.

A new Premium Upgrade Package ($3,000) bundles the HEPA air filter system, LED turn signals, LED fog lights, power liftgate, Nappa leather armrests, LED ambient interior light, and lighted door handles. The cabin can now be had in two new decor trims, Figured Ash Wood and Dark Ash Wood.

The air filtration system is similar to that touted on the Model X, with the automaker claiming it is capable of removing “at least 99.97% of particulate exhaust pollution and effectively all allergens, bacteria and other contaminants from cabin air.”

Tesla Model S biohazard filter controls

When describing this system at the Model X unveiling, Tesla said that filter system is configured to not just remove smog, allergens, and bacteria, but it can also scrub ammonia, viruses, hydrocarbons, and sulfur. CEO Elon Musk joked that the Tesla Model X might be just the vehicle for surviving an apocalyptic outbreak—complete with a bio-weapon defense mode.

To hasten charge times, the standard Model S onboard charger has been upgraded from 40 amps to 48 amps—enabling the juice to flow more quickly into the car from high-amp sources, such as Tesla’s dedicated wall-mounted charger. Tesla states that this improved charger can deliver more than 25 miles of range per hour.

Rumors had circulated about a larger-capacity battery for the Model S, but there was no mention of it during the announcement.

These updates follow the industry tradition of midlife freshenings. While the Premium package adds some welcome elements akin to those found on other luxury sedans at its price, based on our testing, we would have hoped for new, more comfortable standard seats, as well.
