Walk through your supermarket's frozen food aisle or stroll down a beach boardwalk on a hot day, and it can be challenging to ignore the tantalizing array of ice pops, ice cream sandwiches, and other frozen treats. What’s better than a chilled indulgence to cool you down when it’s sweltering out?

And it’s fine to give in to temptation occasionally. “Summer is the time to have fun, so you shouldn’t have to abstain from ice cream and other frozen treats completely,” says Amy Keating, a registered dietitian at Consumer Reports. “But when it’s hot out, it’s easy to go overboard, and over the course of the summer, those treats can add up.”

In general, in a healthy diet, "fun foods" can make up about 10 percent of your daily calories. If you’re following a 2,000-calorie diet, that means you can spend about 200 calories on treats per day—including frozen treats.
