How to Find the Best Deals on a Riding Lawn Mower

Be prepared for sticker shock if you’re in the market for a new riding lawn mower. Prices of these outdoor workhorses—lawn tractors, rear-engine riders, and zero-turn mowers—have risen this season at double-digit rates, according to Courtney Pennicooke, the Consumer Reports product analyst who covers lawn mowers.

    More on Lawn Mowers

Riding lawn mowers aren’t cheap. All gas zero-turn riders and battery riding mowers in Consumer Reports’ ratings cost more than $3,000. But if you have a half-acre or more of grass to cut, a riding mower might be worth the splurge.

These machines are relatively easy to operate and cut in a wide swath, which can help you keep your yard looking great in less time than it would take with a walk-behind mower. They’re pretty fun to drive, too.

If you’re in the market for a riding mower, April is the time to take advantage of sales. Shopping in April also ensures that you’ll have a wider selection to choose from. You don’t need to pay top dollar to get a great rider. When you start to shop, keep in mind that some mower brands are associated only with Home Depot or Lowe’s, while others are sold only through independent dealers. And some brands may sell certain models at a big home-improvement chain and others through dealers.

“Shop around, checking a few different stores,” says Pennicooke. And, if you need a mower right now, prepare to be flexible with your choices. CR’s lawn-mower and tractor shopper reports high demand and potential backlogs for certain brands or models.

If you miss out on early season sales for riding lawn mowers, look again in August and September. There could be fewer models to choose from, but you might find steeper discounts as stores rush to get rid of old inventory to make way for snow blowers.
