Nest Learning Thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat is part of the Thermostat test program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Thermostat models like the Learning Thermostat are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.

Smart IQ: An evaluation based on the smart features and functions associated with thermostats. Considers things like messaging, reporting, features controlled remotely via a mobile device, occupancy sensing and learning.

Manual operation: The ease of manually controlling the thermostat's temperature set-point, heating/cooling schedule, home/away and vacation features - when they are available - through the thermostat and mobile app.

Automation: The ability for a thermostat to operate without input from the user.

Temperature set-point access Temperature set-point access Indicates from which device, temperature set-point can be changed.
app and thermostat
Schedule programming Schedule programming Indicates from which device, heating or cooling schedules can be changed.
app and thermostat
Events per day Events per day Indicates how many events-per-day can be added to a heating or cooling schedule.
more than 4
Home/away access Home/away access Indicates from which device, home/away status can be set.
app and thermostat
Vacation schedule setup Vacation schedule setup Indicates from which device, vacation schedule can be set up.
Remote sensor included Remote sensor included Indicates whether or not a remote sensor is included with the purchase of the thermostat. A remote sensor can monitor household temperature in a different area than where the thermostat is located.
Early recovery Early recovery Indicates whether or not the thermostat can trigger the heating or cooling process earlier than a scheduled time, in order to get the house to temperature by the scheduled time.
Learns behavior Learns behavior Indicates whether or not the thermostat learns the day-to-day heating and cooling preferences of the home's residents.
Touch screen Touch screen Indicates whether or not the thermostat is equipped with a touch screen display.
Voice command Voice command Indicates whether or not the thermostat has resident voice recognition, or will work with a third-party, voice activated digital assistant.
Password protection Password protection Indicates whether the thermostat provides some sort of password protection - which limits the ability to change the thermostat's settings.

Power source Power source The primary source of power the thermostat uses for operation.
internal rechargeable battery
C wire required C wire required Indicates whether a "C" wire is required to power the thermostat.
not required for most installations (see website for details)
Two wire compatible Two wire compatible Indicates whether or not the thermostat can be used in a 2 wire system.
Power sharing Power sharing Indicates, when using a 2-wire setup, whether or not the thermostat draws power through the wires in order to charge the internal battery, which may cause some HVAC systems to operate unpredictably or erratically.
Has geofencing Has geofencing Indicates whether the thermostat can determine if the residence is occupied, based on the location of a mobile device, running the associated app.
Occupancy sensor Occupancy sensor Indicates whether or not the thermostat has sensors that can determine if the residence is occupied.
Warranty (yrs.) Warranty The length of time the thermostat is covered by its manufacturer for defects or repairs.
