Most refrigerators are 36 inches wide, or bigger. If you’re in the market for a new 30-inch-wide refrigerator, you may find your options limited. However, Consumer Reports’ refrigerator ratings include dozens of models that size. CR members can find a number of our top picks below.

These refrigerators perform well, but nearly every 30-inch model comes with some compromises.

“With the exception of built-in models, you’re unlikely to find a 30-inch-wide fridge that’s counter-depth,” says Breann Chai, who leads testing for refrigerators at CR. “You’ll need to be okay with a fridge that sticks out from your kitchen cabinets.” Fridges that are 30 inches wide tend to be at least 30 inches deep. What’s more, slim fridges tend to lack many popular features, such as water dispensers and adjustable or spillproof shelves.

This selection of top-performing 30-inch-wide refrigerators covers top-freezer, bottom-freezer, French-door, and built-in models. The list also includes Bosch, GE, LG, Miele, Samsung models. CR’s refrigerator buying guide has more information on the types of refrigerators and shopping tips.

    How CR Tests Refrigerators

During testing, we outfit each refrigerator with thermocouples in a climate-controlled chamber and monitor it for more than a month, collecting more than 5.4 million temperature readings that identify warm and cold spots, to determine which models will keep your food fresh longest.

Our process includes tests for icemaker performance based on how much ice a fridge produces per day and how much it can hold in its reservoirs. We also evaluate crisper performance to judge how well the crisper drawers retain moisture to keep your food fresh for longer periods of time.

Then, we factor in survey data from thousands of CR members to judge brand reliability and satisfaction. All of that—and then some—informs CR’s refrigerator ratings and each model’s Overall Score.

Below, you can take a peek into our refrigerator labs to see how we evaluate these essential appliances.
