Maybe you need more freezer space to fit that ice cream cake for your kid’s birthday party. Or extra refrigerator room for a second turkey this Thanksgiving.

Enter the flexi-fridge, a refrigerator (or freezer) with adjustable-temperature compartments that you can switch back and forth between fridge and freezer mode.

Samsung is the flexi-fridge leader, offering convertible compartments in an array of models, including the RT18M6215SG top-freezer refrigerator, $854, and the Family Hub models, $3,500 and $5,800 for the two models in our ratings. Other manufacturers have flexi-fridge models: Frigidaire produces an upright freezer that converts to a refrigerator, and Blomberg makes a French-door model.

The models featured here represent a range of flexi-fridge configurations and prices. Check our refrigerator and freezer ratings and Buying Guide for more details.

How We Test Refrigerators and Freezers

After a refrigerator gets wired up with temperature sensors, we monitor it for more than a month in a temperature-controlled chamber to evaluate thermostat control and temperature uniformity. CR’s test engineers collect more than 5.4 million temperature readings for each model to detect warm and cold spots and determine which refrigerators will keep your food fresh longer.

The results reveal that many refrigerators simply don’t do well at their primary function, and that could mean more wasted food and bigger grocery bills.

More on Innovative Appliances

To test freezers and the freezer compartments of refrigerators, our engineers fill the appliances with boxes of frozen spinach, then evaluate how well they keep the packages frozen.

For both refrigerators and freezers, we also measure usable storage capacity, which doesn’t always match what manufacturers claim. We also measure energy efficiency, noise, and how long food will stay frozen during a power outage.

All of this data appears in our refrigerator ratings charts, which as of late September have more than 400 models.

3 Flexible Fridges From CR’s Tests

1. Samsung RF22K9381SR, $3,000
The bottom-right chamber on this four-door French-door model can go from freezer to refrigerator, perfect if you prioritize produce over Popsicles.

This model manages to achieve balanced cooling throughout the refrigerator and freezer compartments and maintain the appropriate temperatures. This model is a good option if a convertible compartment is important to you.

Other flexi-fridge French-door models include several Samsung models, including the Chef Collection RF24J9960S4RF23J9011SR, and aforementioned Family Hub fridges.

2. Frigidaire FFVU21F4QW, $950
The only flexi-freezer here, this model has a single big compartment that you can change from a freezer to a fridge at the flick of a switch. With almost 18 cubic feet of usable storage, this Frigidaire is perfect for stocking up on frozen food or storing snacks and drinks for your next get-together.

3. Samsung RT18M6215SG, $854
The FlexZone freezer of this top-freezer can be converted to a fresh-food compartment at the touch of a button. So if you’re having a party or loading up on produce from the farmer’s market, you have ample space to store it at the right temperature.

This energy-efficient, quiet refrigerator maintains uniform temperatures. Dual evaporators maintain higher humidity levels in the fresh-food section and keep odors from migrating between the two chambers.

A Flexi-Fridge to Avoid

Blomberg BRFD2652SS, $2,500
Blomberg’s take on the convertible-compartment feature is called the Flexi Zone. The bottom-right compartment on this French-door refrigerator can convert from fridge to freezer, with a temperature range of -10° to 50° F.

But although this model is energy efficient and relatively quiet, its temperature control is poor, and it’s prone to hot and cold spots throughout the compartments.
